Taxonomy & naming
Taeniacara candidi was described by the American ichthyologist George S. Myers in 1935, in a short paper titled 'Four new fresh-water fishes from Brazil, Venezuela and Paraguay' (Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington 48: 7-14). Myers erected the new genus Taeniacara to receive it, and the genus has remained monotypic ever since — candidi is the only species it contains. The type locality is Santarém, on the lower Rio Tapajós in Pará, Brazil. A second name, Apistogramma weisei Ahl, 1936, was described from the middle Amazon and is now treated as a junior synonym of Taeniacara candidi, a synonymy that captures the species' close kinship with the dwarf-cichlid genus Apistogramma. Within the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae, Taeniacara sits firmly in the Apistogramma group — the small, sexually dimorphic, cave-spawning dwarfs that also include Apistogrammoides and Apistogramma itself. Its slim, elongate body and distinctive lanceolate tail set it apart morphologically, but several workers have noted that the differences from Apistogramma are not large, and the question of whether Taeniacara should be subsumed into Apistogramma has been raised more than once. Sven O. Kullander, the foremost authority on Neotropical cichlids and the coordinator of the FishBase account, has recommended retaining Taeniacara as a distinct genus pending a fuller revision of Apistogramma rather than collapsing it prematurely. The genus name and species epithet between them encode both a diagnostic feature and a person: see the etymology below.
Morphology
Taeniacara candidi is a small, strikingly elongate dwarf cichlid — the 'torpedo' of its German and Czech common names (Torpedo-Zwergbuntbarsch; in Brazil, torpedinho). Reported maximum size depends heavily on sex and on whether length is given as standard length (SL, snout to tail base) or total length (TL, including the tail). FishBase lists 1.5 in SL for males and about 2 in TL for females, while aquarists who have grown the fish out report mature males of roughly 3 in and females to about 2 in total length; Kullander's checklist figure of 10 in 'standard length' carried over into the IUCN account is plainly a transcription error for a fish of this size. The body is slim and nearly cylindrical, quite unlike the deep, compressed profile of most Apistogramma. The single most conspicuous mark is a bold dark longitudinal band — the taenia of the genus name — running the full length of the body from the snout, through the eye, to the base of the tail. Males are the larger, more colourful sex: their unpaired fins carry blue-green iridescence, the pelvic fins are drawn out into long filaments, and the caudal fin develops into a pointed lyre- or spade-shape, the central rays prolonged into a 'spadetail' that is diagnostic enough to sex juveniles by as young as about eight weeks. Females are smaller and plainer but retain a blue-spotted caudal fin; a brooding female swaps her stripe-on-grey ground for a high-contrast pattern rather than the bright yellow that Apistogramma females assume. Juveniles are cryptically coloured and wear the stripe from an early age.
Habitat
Taeniacara candidi is endemic to Brazil and widely distributed through the lowland blackwaters of the central Amazon. Its range, drawn from museum collections and Kullander (2003), takes in the Rio Negro and its tributaries, the Nhamundá and Trombetas basins, the lower Rio Madeira, the Aripuanã, and the Rio Branco, eastward to the lower Amazon and the Tapajós, spanning the states of Amazonas, Roraima, and Pará. These are classic Amazonian blackwaters: stained tea-brown by dissolved tannins, extremely soft, strongly acidic, and nutrient-poor. The fish lives in shallow, slow or still margins — sandy-bottomed creeks and flooded forest floors carpeted with fallen leaves and submerged branches, where there is little or no rooted vegetation and the leaf litter provides cover from predators. The in-situ chemistry is some of the most extreme inhabited by any cichlid: at the confluence of the Rio Preto and Rio Padauari in the Rio Negro system, Wolfgang Windisch measured a conductivity below 10 microsiemens per centimetre and a pH of about 4.2, with the fish living in water around 5 ft deep. FishBase gives a more conservative captive-keeping envelope of pH from about 5.5 upward and a temperature band of 25-28 degrees C, but field water is warmer and far more acidic than those minima suggest. Predators in these habitats include wolf fish (Hoplias) and pike cichlids (Crenicichla), against which the litter and tangled wood are the dwarf's main defence.
Feeding
Like its Apistogramma relatives, Taeniacara candidi is a micropredator of the leaf-litter and sand zone — a benthic carnivore that picks small invertebrates from the substrate and the detritus suspended over it. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.2, consistent with a diet built on aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and other small bottom-dwelling and planktonic animals rather than on plant material or detritus per se. In the nutrient-poor blackwaters it inhabits, such small invertebrate prey is the reliable food source, and the fish forages low and close to the bottom among the litter. This carnivorous bias carries straight into captivity: the species is notoriously reluctant to take dried foods, and keepers consistently report that live and frozen foods — daphnia and other plankton, Artemia nauplii, and sparing amounts of bloodworm or mosquito larvae — are what keep it in condition. It is not a substrate-sifting eartheater in the Geophagus mould; it is a small, deliberate hunter of moving prey.
Mating
Taeniacara candidi follows the harem-polygynous pattern typical of the Apistogramma group, but pushed toward an unusually male-mobile extreme. A dominant male holds a comparatively large territory overlapping the smaller territories of several females, and FishBase records that he is 'very active sexually and spawns with several females, even at the same time.' Each female establishes and defends her own mini-territory centred on a cave or crevice, and it is the female who chooses the spawning site and does the courting display — keepers describe a female swimming up to and soliciting the male. Once she has spawned, the male's role is essentially over: he returns to patrolling the wider territory and attending to the other females, leaving brood care to her. Intraspecific aggression is the species' defining social trait and its chief husbandry hazard. The fish is peaceful toward unrelated tankmates but ferociously intolerant of its own kind in close quarters: rival males will fight until only the strongest survives, and females defend their nests fiercely. Reports of how severe this is vary — some keepers find the aggression manageable in a planted tank, others lose all but one male — and the difference seems to come down to space, cover, and the number of fish, with crowding (counterintuitively) sometimes diffusing aggression by preventing any one fish from monopolising the others.
Breeding
Taeniacara candidi is a cave-spawning, maternal mouth-free brooder in the Apistogramma mode. The female selects an enclosed cavity — in the wild a crevice among wood or substrate, in aquaria a narrow tube, a flowerpot, or a similar hollow — and attaches her eggs to its ceiling, a behaviour FishBase documents explicitly ('female attaches the offspring at the ceiling of caves'). Clutches are small, typically only a few dozen eggs, which the female tends alone with notable diligence; she is reported to chew the developing fry free of their egg cases after a few days. At about 27-28 degrees C the eggs hatch in roughly three days, and the fry become free-swimming after about another four. The female then leads and guards the school, calling them with a characteristic up-and-down 'see-saw' motion of the body; the male meanwhile guards the broader territory or moves on to other females. The species can be sexually mature at four to six months, so several generations a year are possible. The decisive breeding variable, repeated across decades of hobbyist experience, is water chemistry: many lines require very soft, strongly acidic water (often pH below 5) for the eggs to develop and hatch at all, with spawns failing in harder, near-neutral water. Some keepers, however, have bred the species successfully in soft but roughly neutral water, which — together with the existence of differently coloured wild forms — suggests genuine population-level differences in requirements rather than a single fixed recipe.
In the aquarium
Taeniacara candidi is a beautiful but demanding fish, widely regarded as a step up from the easier Apistogramma — one experienced breeder calls keeping it reliably the 'high school of aquaristics.' It is best kept in a species tank or with only the smallest, gentlest companions. A pair or harem does well in a tank of roughly 15–25 US gal (around 15-25 US gallons) for general keeping; dedicated breeders often work pairs or a single male with three or four females in much smaller 2.5–10 US gal setups. Floor area matters far more than height — a water column of just 6–8 in is ample — and the single most important provision is abundant cover: fine sand or fine gravel (0.5 in) over the bottom, plus many hiding places in the form of plants, roots, leaf litter, and especially small narrow tubes or chipped flowerpots that serve as spawning caves. When keeping several females, their caves should be spaced at least 12 in apart to reduce conflict.
Water is where most keepers succeed or fail. These are blackwater fish from some of the softest, most acidic water any cichlid inhabits, and they should be kept that way: very soft (ideally below about 5 dGH, up to roughly 10 at most), warm (about 25-28 degrees C, with the species preferring the warmer end), and acidic. For maintenance many keepers run tap water around pH 6.8 successfully, but for breeding the consensus pushes much lower — conductivity in the 20-50 microsiemens range and pH around 5.0-5.7, with some lines wanting pH below 5 for eggs to hatch. Reverse osmosis or ion-exchanged water cut with a little tap, or genuinely soft natural water, is the usual approach; blackwater extract and botanicals help. The fish is famously sensitive to water changes — it will sulk on the bottom for a day after a careless one — so changes should be modest and temperature-matched, and the tank should be biologically mature and meticulously clean, as the species (especially in community conditions) is prone to bacterial infection and tends to be short-lived if stressed.
One published aquarium account (Cichlids Yearbook) describes Taeniacara candidi kept successfully alongside wild-caught Cleithracara maronii (keyhole cichlids) in rainwater low in minerals (about 80 µS/cm) with a slightly acid pH — a workable community pairing, since the fish's small size lets it forage largely unnoticed by tankmates that hold the open water. It is a useful confirmation that the very soft, mineral-poor water this species needs is achievable with rainwater as much as with RO.
Diet must be live- or frozen-led: daphnia and other plankton, Artemia, and sparing bloodworm or mosquito larvae, fed in small amounts. Dried foods are usually refused, and overfeeding rich foods like tubifex both raises disease risk and makes fish reluctant to spawn. Tankmates should be small, peaceful, soft-water South Americans — cardinal and neon tetras, small Hyphessobrycon or Hemigrammus, pencilfish (Nannostomus), and the like. Paradoxically these tiny tetras, which the parents do not perceive as a threat, are the most efficient predators of free-swimming fry, so a serious breeding attempt is best done in a dedicated tank. The critical incompatibility, as always with this fish, is with its own kind: multiple males in too little space will fight to a single survivor, so either keep one male or provide a large, heavily structured tank. Honestly assessed, this is not a beginner's dwarf — but for a keeper already comfortable with soft-water tetras and Apistogramma, it is one of the most rewarding of the small blackwater cichlids.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Taeniacara candidi as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). The assessment cites the species' wide distribution across the Negro, Nhamundá, Trombetas, lower Madeira, Aripuanã, Branco, and lower Amazon drainages, notes that it is relatively frequent though not abundant, and identifies no significant threats to its population. It is not listed by CITES. The species is collected for the ornamental aquarium trade — a use formally regulated under Brazilian normative instruction governing the ornamental fishery — but harvest is not flagged as a population-level concern. It occurs within at least three Brazilian protected areas, including the Caxiuanã National Forest, Viruá National Park, and the Saracá-Taquera National Forest, which afford some of its range a measure of protection. As with all Amazonian blackwater specialists, the broader long-term pressures on the basin — deforestation, changes to hydrology and water chemistry, and mining-related contamination — form the backdrop against which its status should be read, but none is presently documented as a specific danger to this small, widespread cichlid.
