Taxonomy & naming
Teleocichla wajapi was described by Henrique R. Varella and Cristiano R. Moreira in 2013, in the journal Zootaxa (3641(2): 177–187), from the rio Jari basin of northern Brazil. The holotype was collected in the rio Jari upstream of the Cachoeira de Santo Antônio (Santo Antônio waterfall) at Laranjal do Jari, Amapá, near 0°38'S; the type series and additional material come from the main river and its tributaries the rio Iratapuru and rio Pacanari. The genus Teleocichla was erected by Sven O. Kullander in 1988 (Copeia 1988: 196–230) for a suite of six rheophilic, rapids-dwelling South American cichlids; the name pairs a reference to the African rapids genus Teleogramma — whose elongate shape and continuous lateral line these fishes parallel by convergence — with -cichla, marking their kinship to the closely related Neotropical genus Crenicichla, the pike cichlids. Teleocichla sits within the subfamily Cichlinae and, in the broader Neotropical scheme, near the Crenicichla–Cichla lineage. Within the genus, Teleocichla wajapi is most readily compared with Teleocichla centrarchus Kullander, 1988: the two are the only Teleocichla species with four spines in the anal fin rather than three, and the description of Teleocichla wajapi also supplied new morphological and distributional information on Teleocichla centrarchus. Teleocichla wajapi is distinguished from Teleocichla centrarchus by its lower flank-scale count (56–62 in the E1 series versus 64–69), a proportionally smaller eye (orbital diameter averaging about 28 percent of head length versus about 33 percent), and a barred or zigzag flank pattern rather than a midlateral series of small dark irregular blotches. The species epithet is a noun in apposition and is not Latinised, so it does not change with grammatical gender; no synonyms exist.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: the largest known specimen measures about 3.5 in in standard length, and most are smaller, consistent with the dwarf, slender build that defines the genus. The body is strongly elongated and roughly cylindrical, recalling a goby or a worm more than a typical deep-bodied cichlid — the rheophilic body plan shared across Teleocichla, in which a low, tapering profile reduces drag in fast water. The dorsal fin is long and many-spined, with roughly 20 to 22 spines followed by 9 to 10 soft rays; the anal fin carries four spines and 6 to 8 soft rays, the four-spine condition being one of the species' diagnostic traits (shared in the genus only with Teleocichla centrarchus). The lateral line is divided into separate anterior and posterior branches offset by a single scale row — a feature that separates Teleocichla wajapi from the continuous-lateral-line species Teleocichla centisquama and T. monogramma. Coloration is a muted clearwater-rapids palette of grays and browns broken by a barred or zigzag pattern of darker markings along the flanks, which is one of the easiest ways to tell it from the spotted Teleocichla centrarchus and from the irregularly speckled Teleocichla cinderella. The mouth is modest in size rather than the wide gape of a piscivore. Sexual dimorphism in the genus is subtle and was not strongly emphasised in the original description; as in related rheophilic cichlids, mature males tend to be the larger, more territorial sex, but no pronounced external sexual ornamentation has been documented for this species.
Habitat
Teleocichla wajapi is endemic to Brazil and, as far as is known, to a single river system: the rio Jari, which rises on the Guiana Shield and flows south to join the lower Amazon along the Amapá–Pará border. Its documented range is restricted to the area of the Cachoeira (Corredeira) de Santo Antônio do Jari and to two tributaries, the rio Iratapuru and the rio Pacanari, in the states of Amapá and Pará. The Jari belongs to the FEOW 'Amazonas Guiana Shield' freshwater ecoregion, a distinct assemblage of clearwater and blackwater rivers draining the ancient crystalline shield; these waters carry low suspended sediment and low dissolved nutrients, and their fauna is recognised as separate from the rest of the Amazon basin. The fish itself is a creature of the rapids. The original description records it from shallow, fast-flowing stretches with clear water over a rocky riverbed built of everything from pebbles to boulders and rock slabs, where it stays mostly stationary in the slower-flowing pockets — sheltered between slabs of rock or close to the bank — rather than holding station in the full force of the current. Direct in-situ chemistry for the Jari was not detailed in the description, but Shield rapids of this type are warm, soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral; comparable Teleocichla habitat in the Rio Xingu has been measured at about pH 6.5, very low hardness (around 1 °dH), conductivity near 120 µS, and water temperatures into the low 30s °C during the low-water season. Observed depth in these rapids is shallow — on the order of one metre — over the rock.
Feeding
No gut-content study of Teleocichla wajapi has been published, so its diet is inferred from its anatomy and from what is known of the genus. Teleocichla are not ambush predators like their Crenicichla relatives: their mouths are comparatively small, and the dentition and modest gape are suited to picking small invertebrates off rock surfaces rather than seizing fish. The working interpretation is therefore of a benthic invertivore that gleans aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other small prey, together with associated detritus and aufwuchs, from the rocky substrate of the rapids — the same foraging niche occupied by African rapids cichlids such as Teleogramma, which Teleocichla parallels by convergence. FishBase places the genus at a trophic level around 3.2, in keeping with a small carnivore-leaning omnivore. In its community, Teleocichla wajapi is one of several rock-dwelling fishes partitioning the crevices and current-swept stone of a Guiana Shield rapid.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Teleocichla wajapi has not been observed or described — neither in the wild nor, as far as the record shows, in aquaria, since the species has essentially never been kept. What can be said is drawn from the genus. Teleocichla are substrate-bound rapids fish in which mature males hold small territories centred on a particular stone, pit or crevice, hiding beneath flat rocks when threatened and using their stiffened, horizontally-spread pectoral fins to press themselves against the rock and resist the current. Species differ in how social or aggressive they are, and several are syntopic — more than one Teleocichla species has been found sheltering under the same rock — which implies behavioural rather than spatial barriers keep them reproductively separate. By analogy with these congeners and with the broader rheophilic-cichlid pattern, pair formation in Teleocichla wajapi is expected to revolve around a male-defended rocky territory and a sheltered crevice, but the specifics of its courtship remain undocumented.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Teleocichla wajapi, and its eggs, clutch size and fry are unknown. The genus is understood to be cryptic, cave- or crevice-spawning substrate brooders: in the rapids these fish nest in holes and pits among stones and beneath flat slabs, the same sheltered cavities the territorial males defend, and the few captive successes with other Teleocichla species (German aquarists spawned wild-caught fish in the late 1980s) point to a cave-spawning, biparental-to-substrate mode rather than open-water or mouthbrooding strategies. As a guide to scale rather than a measured figure for this species, small rheophilic Neotropical cichlids of this build typically lay modest clutches — on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred adhesive eggs attached inside a crevice and guarded by the parents until the fry are free-swimming. For Teleocichla wajapi specifically these numbers are genus-typical inference, not observation; nothing about its fecundity or parental care has been recorded.
In the aquarium
Teleocichla wajapi is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has no established presence in the hobby or trade, no common name, and lives in a remote and tightly restricted stretch of the rio Jari that is not a commercial collecting ground. Anyone who did encounter it would be keeping a specialised rheophile, and the genus as a whole has a reputation as difficult and rarely-traded — its few members reach the hobby only sporadically as wild imports, command high prices, and are considered among the most sought-after of the pike-cichlid relatives precisely because they are so seldom available. Should the species ever appear, its needs would mirror those of its congeners: a rapids tank rather than a community aquarium. That means strong, well-oxygenated flow from powerheads or a river-manifold, a substrate of water-worn pebbles, cobbles and flat rock with abundant crevices and caves for each fish to claim a territory, and warm, soft, clear, slightly acidic to near-neutral water (roughly pH 5.5–7.0, low hardness, about 79–86 °F) kept scrupulously clean and well-filtered, since rapids fish are intolerant of stagnation and dissolved waste. PVC tubes or stacked rockwork give the security these secretive fish demand, and tankmates would need to be other small, current-tolerant species; conspecific males will compete for the best caves. A varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, finely chopped foods — best matches its rock-gleaning natural feeding. This is a description of how the genus is kept, not a record of Teleocichla wajapi being maintained, which has not happened in any documented way.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Teleocichla wajapi as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 18 May 2022 by the Brazilian assessment body ICMBio (Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade) and published in 2022. The Data Deficient category reflects how little is known: the species has a small documented range confined to the Santo Antônio rapids of the rio Jari and the tributaries Iratapuru and Pacanari, and there is too little information on its population, ecology and trends to judge its extinction risk. That narrow, rapids-restricted distribution is itself a concern, because the one habitat type these fish depend on — fast, rocky, clearwater shoals — is exactly what is lost when a river is dammed. The IUCN account flags hydropower and small dams as ongoing pressures in the basin, and the type locality lies at the Santo Antônio do Jari falls, the site of a hydroelectric development; impoundment that drowns rapids and alters flow would directly remove the rheophilic microhabitat to which Teleocichla wajapi is adapted. There is no CITES listing and no documented commercial use. As a Guiana Shield endemic with an extremely small known range and a habitat vulnerable to river regulation, it is the kind of narrow-range rapids specialist that warrants monitoring even where, as here, the formal status is one of insufficient data.
