Taxonomy & naming
Saxatilia pydanielae was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Anton Ploeg in 1991, as one of fifteen new species erected in his University of Amsterdam doctoral revision of the South American pike-cichlid genus Crenicichla. The type locality is an igarapé (forest stream) at kilometre 10 of highway BR-163 in the Trombetas River system, Pará, Brazil; the holotype (INPA 3078) and an extensive paratype series are split between the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) in Manaus, the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP), and the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). Ploeg placed the fish in his Crenicichla saxatilis species group, the assemblage of medium-bodied, large-scaled, spangle-flanked pikes diagnosed by a dark humeral (shoulder) blotch, of which more than twenty species are now recognized. The genus has since been the subject of a sweeping reclassification: using an integrative phylogenetic approach, Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández (2023) elevated the pike cichlids to the subtribe Crenicichlina and split the old, over-large Crenicichla into several genera, transferring the saxatilis-group species — including this one — into the resurrected genus Saxatilia. Under that scheme the valid name is Saxatilia pydanielae (Ploeg, 1991). The reclassification is not yet universally adopted, and because most aquarists and databases still file the species under its long-standing combination, this account retains the Crenicichla heading while noting the Saxatilia placement. No synonyms are attached to the species.
Morphology
Saxatilia pydanielae is a small pike cichlid: the largest measured specimen in Ploeg's type series reached about 7 in in standard length, placing it among the more modestly sized members of the saxatilis group rather than the foot-plus giants of the lugubris group. The body plan is the classic pike-cichlid one — elongate and nearly cylindrical, with a long head, a deeply cleft mouth lined with small conical teeth, and the dorsal fin set well back and running most of the length of the body, the whole shape adapted for ambushing prey from cover. As a saxatilis-group fish it carries the group's hallmark dark humeral blotch behind the gill cover, a suborbital stripe running down from the eye, and the spangling that gives these pikes their hobby name: rows of small pale dots scattered over the flanks and onto the unpaired fins, typically most developed in males. Females of the group characteristically develop a dark margin to the dorsal fin and a more contrasting belly when in breeding condition. Because the species is so rarely collected and has never been the subject of a detailed colour study in life, its precise live coloration and the full extent of its sexual dimorphism are not well documented; the description rests largely on preserved material. In line with its relatives, sexual size and fin differences are expected to be present but subtle.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Brazil and, on present records, restricted to the upper Trombetas River drainage above the great rapids at Cachoeira Porteira, in northern Pará. The Trombetas is a left-bank (northern) tributary of the lower Amazon that rises on the southern slopes of the Guiana Shield; it is a clearwater river, draining ancient crystalline-rock uplands, and its upper course is broken by extensive rapids and cataracts. Saxatilia pydanielae was collected from forest streams (igarapés) and the rapids-influenced reaches of this system, the kind of structured, rocky, well-oxygenated clearwater habitat favoured by many saxatilis-group pikes, which shelter among rocks, submerged wood and leaf litter. No in-situ chemistry was published with the original description, but Guiana-Shield clearwater tributaries of this type are characteristically warm, soft and only mildly acidic to near-neutral — broadly pH 5.5–7.0 and roughly 79–86 °F, with very low dissolved-mineral content. These are shallow-water fish of streams and rapids margins rather than deep river channels, so the relevant habitat depth is a shallow band of roughly 0–10 ft; FishBase carries no formal depth range for the species, and the figure here reflects the documented stream-and-rapids biotope rather than a measured maximum.
Feeding
No direct study of the diet of Saxatilia pydanielae has been published, and FishBase records no gut-content data; its feeding ecology is inferred from its anatomy and from its better-studied relatives. Pike cichlids of the saxatilis group are carnivorous ambush predators — the elongate body, large terminal mouth and conical dentition are the tools of a fish that lies among rocks and wood and lunges at passing prey. Across the group the wild diet is dominated by aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and small fish, with the balance shifting toward fish as the animal grows; FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.3 for this species, consistent with a small-prey predator rather than a dedicated piscivore. In the rapids and stream habitats of the upper Trombetas, Saxatilia pydanielae most plausibly functions as a benthic micro-predator working the rock and litter interstices for insect larvae, shrimp and fish fry. As with most pikes, it is best regarded as opportunistic — taking whatever invertebrate or small vertebrate prey the structured clearwater habitat provides.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Saxatilia pydanielae has not been observed or recorded, in the wild or in captivity — the species is too rarely collected and too seldom kept for any first-hand account to exist. What can be said is drawn from the consistent pattern shown by the saxatilis group and by pike cichlids generally. These fish form monogamous pairs that hold and defend a territory centred on a spawning site; pair formation is preceded by mutual display, and in the saxatilis group the female's breeding dress — a darker belly and a dark-edged dorsal fin — signals her readiness. Both sexes become strongly territorial around the nest, and intraspecific aggression outside the bonded pair is typical of the genus. Beyond this group-level expectation, the specifics of courtship, pair bonding and territory size in Saxatilia pydanielae remain undocumented.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Saxatilia pydanielae, in nature or in aquaria. Inference therefore rests entirely on the genus and species group. Like its congeners, it is expected to be a biparental substrate- or cave-spawner: the pair cleans a sheltered surface — the underside of a rock, a crevice, the inside of a cavity in wood — and lays a single adhering clutch, which both parents then guard and tend. In pike cichlids the female generally takes the lead in fanning and defending the eggs while the male patrols the wider territory, and after the larvae become free-swimming the pair continues to shepherd the brood for some time. No clutch count exists for this species; small-to-medium saxatilis-group pikes of comparable size typically lay on the order of one to several hundred eggs (a genus-typical figure of roughly 100–300 eggs is a reasonable expectation, not a measured value for Saxatilia pydanielae). Spawning in the wild is most likely tied to the warm wet-season high-water period, as it is in other Amazon-basin pikes, but this too is inferred rather than observed.
In the aquarium
Saxatilia pydanielae is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is rarely collected, has no established presence in the ornamental trade, and there is no body of keeper experience to draw on; any aquarium tucked under this name would more often be a misidentified or trade-named Trombetas or Tapajós pike than the genuine article. As a result, the husbandry notes below are extrapolated from closely related saxatilis-group pikes and should be read as guidance, not as a tested protocol for this species.
A small pike of around 7 in is best given a tank of at least 47 in (roughly 55–65 US gal) for a single fish or a bonded pair, longer if it is to be kept with others, because pike cichlids are territorial and will defend a chosen cave aggressively. The layout should mirror the rocky clearwater rapids it comes from: a sand or fine-gravel bottom, abundant rockwork and driftwood arranged to create caves and broken sight-lines, and at least one defensible spawning cavity per fish. Water should be warm and soft to mirror the Guiana-Shield clearwater habitat — about 79–86 °F, pH on the order of 5.5–7.0, low hardness — with strong filtration and good oxygenation to reproduce the flowing, well-aerated conditions of a rapids-fed stream; brisk current is appropriate rather than something to be avoided. Diet should be carnivorous: a varied menu of frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, mysis, shrimp) and, for a grown fish, occasional larger meaty items, weaning where possible onto quality sinking pellets. Tankmates should be robust, mid-sized, open-water or upper-level fish too large to be treated as prey and not so placid that they will be bullied; conspecific aggression means that keeping more than one pike demands space and cover. None of this has been verified for Saxatilia pydanielae specifically, and a keeper acquiring a fish under this name should treat it as an experiment and observe it on its own terms.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia pydanielae as Data Deficient (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio; published 2022). The assessment notes that the species is endemic to Brazil, is known from only a few records at a handful of localities, is taxonomically difficult to identify, and has an unknown population status — the combination of factors that warrants a Data Deficient rather than a threatened category. The one specific concern the assessors flag is the proposed construction of a hydroelectric dam at Cachoeira Porteira on the Trombetas: a dam at that rapids would inundate and fragment exactly the kind of clearwater rapids habitat the species occupies, a serious potential threat to a fish with so small a known range. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is not a fishery or meaningful trade target. As with many narrow-range Guiana-Shield and Amazon endemics, its long-term prospects hinge less on harvest than on the trajectory of regional hydropower, deforestation and mining pressure across the basin; for Saxatilia pydanielae the most honest statement is that we do not yet know enough about its distribution or abundance to gauge its status, and that closing that gap is itself a conservation priority.
