Thorichthys socolofi, the Chiapas cichlid, is a firemouth-type cichlid endemic to the Río Grijalva basin of Chiapas in southern Mexico, where it lives in the faster, cooler reaches of clear rivers. Described only in 1984 and named for the American aquarium-fish exporter Ross Socolof, who made the first collections, it is a pale, pearly firemouth — silvery-blue to lavender-grey, finely spangled, with the genus's reddish throat and gill-cover eyespots. A fish of well-oxygenated mid- and upper-river water, it is one of the more demanding Thorichthys both in the wild and in the aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

The Chiapas cichlid was described by Robert Rush Miller and Jeffrey N. Taylor in 1984 as Cichlasoma socolofi, from the Río Misalá, a tributary of the Río Tulijá in the Río Grijalva basin of Chiapas, Mexico (holotype UMMZ 210819). The epithet honours Ross Benjamin Socolof (1925–2009), the naturalist and aquarium-fish exporter, breeder and wholesaler who, in Miller and Taylor's words, "was instrumental in making the first collections of the new species and who … has enthusiastically collected cichlids and other fishes from Middle America and generously made them available for study." Originally placed in Cichlasoma, it was transferred to the resurrected firemouth genus as Thorichthys socolofi (Burgess 2000; Kullander in Reis et al. 2003) and retained as valid in subsequent revisions of the Middle American cichlids (McMahan et al. 2015; Říčan et al. 2016; Fricke et al. 2024). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it as an endemic of the Grijalva (and, in some sources, adjacent Usumacinta) system on the Atlantic slope of Mexico.

Morphology

Thorichthys socolofi is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed firemouth reaching about 5.5 in standard length (FishBase). It is among the palest and most delicately coloured members of the genus: the body is a silvery pearl to lavender- or blue-grey, finely overlaid with iridescent blue-green spangling on the flanks, cheeks and fins, giving well-conditioned fish a soft, shimmering appearance. As in its congeners the lower head and throat carry a reddish wash, and each gill cover bears a dark, light-ringed ocellus used in frontal threat display, with a dark midline marking and caudal-base spot usually present. Males grow larger, with more produced fin tips and stronger colour; females are smaller and rounder. Adapted to flowing water, it is a relatively trim and active firemouth.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Río Grijalva basin of Chiapas, Mexico, including the Río Tulijá system and its tributary the Río Misalá, the type locality. FishBase reports that adults inhabit the faster-flowing water of the middle and upper reaches of rivers — a clear, well-oxygenated, current-swept biotope rather than the still lowland margins favoured by some congeners. Recorded temperatures are around 73–77 °F, among the cooler of the genus. The clear, fast Chiapas rivers it occupies drain limestone country, implying generally hard, alkaline water. Its restriction to a single basin and its preference for flowing, oxygen-rich water give it a relatively narrow and ecologically specific range.

Feeding

Thorichthys socolofi is a benthic omnivore that forages over the substrate of its river habitat, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans and organic detritus, along with algae grazed from rocks and surfaces. The genus's sifting and grubbing technique is applied here to the firmer, current-swept bottoms of mid- and upper-river reaches. FishBase places the genus at a trophic level around 3.3. In its clear Chiapas rivers it is a small generalist invertebrate-feeder and grazer.

Mating

As a firemouth, the Chiapas cichlid is a monogamous pair-spawner that uses the genus's frontal threat display — flared gill covers, presented eyespots and a reddened throat — to settle disputes and to court. Pairs form after mutual display, then select and clean a spawning site and defend a territory around it. Detailed field observations of courtship in socolofi are limited; its social behaviour is understood largely by analogy with the better-studied members of the genus, adjusted for its flowing-water setting.

Breeding

Thorichthys socolofi is a biparental open-substrate spawner. Following the genus pattern, a pair cleans a hard surface or sheltered site, deposits a clutch of a few hundred eggs, and both parents guard the eggs and then escort the hatched larvae and free-swimming fry, moving the wrigglers between sheltered pits. FishBase carries fecundity data for the species consistent with this moderate clutch size. Parental care is shared through the early fry stage. Precise wild egg counts and developmental timing for socolofi specifically are not richly documented, but its reproduction tracks the genus-typical biparental pattern, and it spawns in the same manner in the aquarium when given suitable conditions.

In the aquarium

The Chiapas cichlid is a sought-after firemouth among Central-American-cichlid specialists, prized for its soft, pearly-lavender colouring, but it is more demanding than the lowland firemouths because of its origins in cool, fast, oxygen-rich river water. A pair needs a tank of about 55 US gal or more with a footprint near 47 in, aquascaped to recreate a clear-river biotope — rounded rocks and cobbles, some open sand, and brisk, well-oxygenated water movement from the filtration.

Water should be cooler than for the typical firemouth, clean and well-aerated: temperature about 73–79 °F, pH roughly 7.2–8.2, with medium-hard to hard water. Strong filtration and good flow matter both for oxygenation and to mimic its native current, and large, frequent partial water changes help maintain the clear conditions it expects. Like all Thorichthys it is prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion in stale, overstocked water, and this species is less forgiving than its lowland kin. Feeding is straightforward — quality sinking foods, frozen and live invertebrates, and some algae- or vegetable-based food.

Temperament follows the genus: relatively peaceful outside breeding and reliant on display, but territorial when spawning. Choose sturdy, even-tempered tankmates that tolerate cooler, flowing, oxygen-rich water. This is a fish best suited to a keeper prepared to provide a properly oxygenated, current-driven setup rather than a standard warm community tank.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Thorichthys socolofi as Data Deficient (assessed 27 February 2018, published 2019). As an endemic confined to a single basin — the Río Grijalva drainage of Chiapas — and dependent on clear, fast, well-oxygenated river water, it is inherently more vulnerable to localised habitat degradation than the wide-ranging firemouths; but the assessors judged that available data on its population trend, size and distribution were insufficient to assign a definitive threat category. The general pressures on the Grijalva basin — pollution, sedimentation, water extraction, dam development and habitat alteration — are the backdrop to its status, and clearer survey data are needed to determine whether this narrow-range, flowing-water specialist is at risk.
