Coptodon camerunensis is a small, little-known tilapiine cichlid endemic to the coastal rivers of southwestern Cameroon, where it lives in the Meme, Mungo and Wouri drainages that empty toward the Gulf of Guinea. First named in 1903 by the Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg as a variety of Tilapia lata, it was elevated to full species and, in 2013, moved into the resurrected genus Coptodon — the West and Central African substrate-spawning tilapias. Unlike the famous mouthbrooding tilapias of aquaculture, it is a biparental nest-builder, and its narrow range in a region of intense deforestation and agriculture has earned it a Vulnerable listing on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Coptodon camerunensis was described by the Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg in 1903, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, as Tilapia lata var. camerunensis — that is, originally as a named variety of Tilapia lata rather than as a full species. The description rested on a single specimen, the holotype (register ZMUU 284, in the Uppsala University zoological museum), taken from the Meme River in Cameroon, which stands as the type locality. The name was later treated as a valid species, Tilapia camerunensis, by Teugels and Thys van den Audenaerde in their 1991 review of the West African tilapias. The modern combination dates to the wholesale dismantling of the catch-all genus Tilapia: in their molecular phylogeny of the haplotilapiine cichlids, Dunz and Schliewen (2013) showed that the roughly 40 species long lumped under Tilapia did not form a natural group, and they distributed them among several genera. The West and Central African substrate-spawning lineage — including the type species Coptodon zillii — was placed in Coptodon Gervais, 1853, a name that had lain dormant in synonymy since the nineteenth century. Coptodon camerunensis sits within this assemblage as one of a cluster of Cameroonian Coptodon, alongside the better-known crater-lake endemics of the region (such as the Lake Bermin and Lake Barombi Mbo flocks). A 2023 study sequencing the complete mitochondrial genome of Coptodon camerunensis as a Cameroon endemic has since added molecular data to anchor its position among the Old-World cichlids.

Morphology

Coptodon camerunensis is a small tilapiine, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 5.5 in total length — a modest size by tilapia standards, far short of the 30-plus-centimetre bulk of the food-fish Coptodon and Oreochromis species. The body is the typical deep, laterally compressed cichlid form. Meristic counts from the FishBase diagnosis give a dorsal fin of 16 spines and 11 to 12 soft rays and an anal fin of 3 spines and 8 to 9 soft rays. The most useful diagnostic features are in the gill rakers and fin pattern: the species carries nine or fewer rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch — a low count that helps separate it from congeners — and the soft dorsal fin bears blackish streaks that curve forward above the dark 'tilapia spot' (the dark blotch at the rear of the soft dorsal that gives the group its informal name) and become more longitudinal toward the front of the fin. As in most Coptodon, the dentition is built around bicuspid (notched) outer teeth, the feature that gives the genus its name. Reliable in-life colour notes for this poorly photographed species are scarce; no confirmed photograph accompanies its FishBase record. Sexual dimorphism in the genus is generally subtle, with males tending to grow somewhat larger and to develop more intense breeding colour, but it has not been documented in detail for this particular species.

Habitat

The species is a freshwater, benthopelagic cichlid endemic to the short coastal river systems of southwestern Cameroon, between roughly 3 and 8 degrees north. It is recorded from the Meme River (the type locality), the Mungo River, and the Wouri River — three drainages of the wet, forested Cameroon littoral that flow southward into the Gulf of Guinea around the Mount Cameroon massif. This is a region of warm, humid lowland rainforest and one of the highest-rainfall areas in Africa, and the rivers concerned are typical tropical coastal streams and their tributaries rather than large lakes. Catalog of Fishes summarises the distribution simply as freshwater, west-central Africa, Cameroon, and the IUCN assessment treats it as a Cameroon endemic with a restricted range. Detailed in-situ water chemistry has not been published for this species, but the lowland Cameroonian coastal rivers it occupies are warm year-round, typically running on the soft, near-neutral to mildly acidic side; aquarium guidance for the genus places it broadly in the range of about 22 to 28 degrees Celsius and pH near 6 to 8. As a small fish of streams and their shallow margins, it lives near the bottom in the upper few metres of the water column rather than in deep water.

Feeding

No dedicated diet study has been published for Coptodon camerunensis, but its feeding ecology can be read with confidence from its genus. Coptodon are substrate-grazing herbivores and detritivores: across the group they rasp algae and biofilm from rocks, wood and plant surfaces, browse on soft aquatic and submerged terrestrial vegetation, and take in organic detritus and the small invertebrates entangled with it. FishBase places Coptodon camerunensis at a low trophic level of about 2.6, consistent with a plant- and detritus-dominated diet rather than a predatory one. In the warm, productive coastal streams of its range it would function as one of the resident grazer-detritivores, helping to convert algal and plant material into fish biomass. This herbivorous, substrate-oriented feeding style is the ecological hallmark that separates the Coptodon tilapias from many of the carnivorous haplochromine and lamprologine cichlids elsewhere in Africa, and it is the same trophic strategy that makes other members of the genus, such as Coptodon zillii, important — and sometimes invasive — aquaculture and weed-control fishes.

Mating

Reproduction is where the Coptodon tilapias most clearly diverge from the mouthbrooding tilapias of fish farms. Coptodon camerunensis is reported by FishBase to be a probable pair-bonding, open substrate spawner, with both parents guarding the brood. In practice this means that, as the breeding season approaches, a male and female form a monogamous pair and together establish and defend a territory centred on a cleaned spawning site rather than on a deep nest or borrowed cave. Courtship in substrate-spawning tilapias typically involves mutual displays, lateral presentation, and joint clearing of the chosen surface, after which the bonded pair drives off intruders from a defended patch of streambed. Detailed field observations of courtship specific to this species have not been published, so the picture is drawn from the well-documented behaviour of its close relatives, but the essential point — a defended, jointly held territory built around a faithful pair — is consistent across the genus.

Breeding

Coptodon camerunensis is a biparental substrate (open) brooder: the pair spawns onto a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone, a root, or firm streambed — and both parents then guard and tend the developing eggs and fry, in sharp contrast to the maternal mouthbrooding seen in Oreochromis and Sarotherodon. Adhesive eggs are deposited in a sheet on the substrate; the female fans them to keep them oxygenated and free of silt and fungus, while the male patrols the territory and repels intruders. After hatching, the wriggler larvae are typically moved to shallow pits and guarded until the fry are free-swimming, at which point the pair shepherds the school through the shallows. Specific clutch counts for Coptodon camerunensis have not been reported in the literature; substrate-spawning Coptodon of this small size typically lay on the order of a few hundred to one or two thousand eggs per spawning, scaling with female size, and the genus is noted for diligent, sustained biparental care. Spawning is expected to track the warm, high-water conditions of the Cameroonian rainy season, though the precise triggers have not been documented in the wild for this species.

In the aquarium

Coptodon camerunensis is essentially an ichthyological rather than an aquarium fish: it has no established presence in the ornamental trade, is rarely if ever exported, and almost nothing has been written about keeping it specifically. Any husbandry guidance is therefore extrapolated from its close relatives and should be read as informed inference rather than tested practice. If it were kept, it would call for the standard substrate-spawning tilapia setup. A pair needs a tank in the order of 55 US gal or more (roughly 47 in of length) because, like most Coptodon, breeding adults become strongly territorial and will defend a large area around the nest. Warm water suits it — around 24 to 28 degrees Celsius — at a near-neutral pH (about 6.0 to 8.0) and moderate hardness, mirroring the warm coastal streams of its range. A sand or fine-gravel bottom, flat stones and roots to serve as spawning surfaces, and robust filtration with gentle to moderate flow would all be appropriate, along with generous weekly water changes given the heavy feeding and waste output typical of tilapias. Being a grazing detritivore, it would readily accept a vegetable-leaning diet: spirulina and other plant-based prepared foods, blanched greens, and the occasional protein supplement. The main caution is the same one that applies across the genus — Coptodon are diggers and herbivores that uproot plants and can be belligerent toward conspecifics and tankmates when in breeding condition, so soft-leaved plants are likely to be destroyed and a roomy, well-structured tank is essential to defuse aggression. Because this is a range-restricted, Vulnerable endemic, any specimens in captivity would be best regarded as a conservation and study responsibility rather than a casual community fish.

Conservation

Coptodon camerunensis is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B2ab(iii), assessed by T. Moelants on 16 February 2009 and published in 2010; the assessment treats it as a Cameroon endemic with a restricted area of occupancy and a population trend recorded as unknown. The 'B2ab(iii)' criterion flags a small and fragmented or declining area of occupancy together with a continuing decline in the quality of the species' habitat — the central concern for a fish confined to a few coastal river systems in one of the most heavily exploited landscapes in Central Africa. The forests and rivers of the Cameroon littoral around Mount Cameroon face sustained pressure from logging, the expansion of oil-palm, rubber and other plantation agriculture, urban and industrial growth around the Douala conurbation on the Wouri, and the siltation, pollution and deforestation that accompany them. These habitat threats — rather than direct fishing — are what underpin the Vulnerable listing. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. As with many narrowly endemic Cameroonian cichlids, its long-term prospects are tied directly to the fate of a small set of southwestern rivers, and up-to-date field surveys of its populations would be valuable for any future reassessment.
