The Gombe NP population
Tropheus brichardi "Gombe NP" is the Gombe NP population of Tropheus brichardi, a geographic colour form from the Tanzania coast of Lake Tanganyika in the northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Tropheus brichardi, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Tropheus brichardi is a stocky, algae-grazing cichlid endemic to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika, the fish for which the whole hard-tempered genus Tropheus is named in hobby shorthand. Females and juveniles wear crisp vertical bars while adult males fade to a sober olive-brown, often keeping just a stripe or two of yellow. Unusually for its genus, it tolerates a measure of silt that purer rock-grazers refuse, which lets it hold ground in murkier water and deeper, sediment-dusted reef. In the aquarium it is famous on two counts: an intricate colony social life and an exasperating tendency toward 'bloat' when its low-protein gut is fed the wrong food.
