Taxonomy & naming
Tylochromis labrodon was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1920, in his paper "A revision of the African cichlid fishes of the genus Tylochromis" (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, series 9, volume 5, pages 163–169), the same monograph in which he erected the genus itself around the type species Tylochromis jentinki. The original description (page 168, figure 2c) was based on material from Stanley Pool — now Malebo Pool, the broad lake-like reach of the Congo River between Kinshasa and Brazzaville — in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The name has remained valid for a century: Melanie Stiassny, whose 1989 monograph "A taxonomic revision of the African genus Tylochromis (Labroidei, Cichlidae)" (Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, 258: 1–161) is the modern foundation of the genus, selected the lectotype (BMNH 1919.9.10.308, with two paralectotypes BMNH 1899.2.20.13–14) and retained labrodon as a good species in her CLOFFA treatment (Stiassny, 1991). One caveat is worth stating plainly: Decru and colleagues (2017) flagged Tylochromis labrodon as a possible synonym of the earlier Tylochromis lateralis (Boulenger, 1898), so its status as a fully distinct species is not beyond question, though the Catalog of Fishes currently lists it as valid. Within the family the genus sits in subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, but Stiassny's broader work (American Museum Novitates 2993, 1990) placed Tylochromis near the very base of the African cichlid tree, well outside the haplochromine and lamprologine assemblages — an ancient, generalized lineage rather than a product of any of the famous lake radiations.
Morphology
Tylochromis labrodon is a robust, laterally compressed cichlid reaching about 9 in standard length, a typical mid-sized member of the genus. The body plan reads instantly as that of a benthic feeder: deep-bodied with a steep forehead, large body scales, two lateral lines, and a comparatively small, low-set mouth rather than the gaping jaws of a midwater predator. Fin counts run to 14–16 dorsal spines and 13–15 soft rays, with 3 anal spines and 7 anal soft rays over 28 vertebrae. Stiassny's diagnosis keys the species on a suite of hard-anatomy characters: a lateral line of 34 or fewer scales; 17–18 gill-rakers along the lower limb of the first arch; an inferior vertebral apophysis with a characteristic spade-like outline; a fully ossified posttemporal laterosensory canal; and relatively short pectoral fins that rarely reach the level of the vent. The signature feature, and the one the name commemorates, is the lower pharyngeal jaw — extremely robust and paved with flattened, mill-like molariform teeth covering roughly two-thirds of the dentigerous surface, the crushing apparatus of a durophagous sifter. No reliable account of sexual dimorphism in this species has been published; as in most Tylochromis the sexes are externally similar in colour and form, and ripe females are presumably distinguished mainly by greater body depth and by mouthbrooding rather than by fixed external markings. Preserved museum specimens give little sense of life colour, which appears not to have been documented in detail.
Habitat
The species is a Congo-basin endemic, distributed throughout the Congo River system from the lower Congo upstream to just above Stanley Falls (Boyoma Falls), the great cataract that marks the head of the navigable middle river. Its recorded range includes Malebo Pool, the middle Congo mainstream, and the tributary rivers Kwilu, Itimbiri and Lomami, spanning the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic and Cameroon. This places it across three freshwater ecoregions — Malebo Pool, the vast Cuvette Centrale of the central basin, and the Lower Congo. As a benthopelagic, benthic-feeding cichlid it inhabits the soft-bottomed channels, sandy and muddy shallows, and floodplain margins of these warm equatorial rivers rather than rocky or fast-water habitats. FishBase does not publish a measured depth range or in-situ chemistry for the species; by the standards of the lowland Congo it lives in warm, soft to moderately mineralized, near-neutral to mildly acidic or alkaline freshwater, and a working envelope of roughly pH 6.5–8.0 and 75–84 °F reflects the broad conditions of its host rivers rather than precise field readings. Depth has not been documented and is best treated as the shallow river-channel and floodplain range typical of the genus's riverine members.
Feeding
Tylochromis labrodon is classed by FishBase as a benthic macrophage, with an estimated trophic level near 2.6 — squarely an invertebrate-and-detritus feeder rather than a piscivore. Its documented diet is mixed: insects and their larvae, molluscs, plants and detritus, taken from the bottom in the sand-sifting and bottom-grubbing manner that is the ecological signature of the whole genus. The heavily molarized lower pharyngeal jaw is the key to the mollusc component — those flattened mill-like teeth are built to crack snail and bivalve shells (durophagy), letting the fish exploit hard-shelled prey that softer-jawed cichlids cannot process. In functional terms it works the soft sediment as a roving generalist sifter, processing mouthfuls of substrate and extracting invertebrates, organic material and the occasional plant fragment. Within the diverse Congo fish community it occupies the role of a sand-and-mud benthic forager and snail-crusher rather than a specialist of any narrow niche, consistent with the structurally conservative, generalist ecology that characterizes Tylochromis as a lineage.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in Tylochromis labrodon has not been observed directly in the wild, but the breeding system of the genus is consistent and well established, and it organizes the social life of these fish in a particular way. Tylochromis are maternal mouthbrooders that do not form lasting pair bonds: the male's contribution effectively ends at fertilization, and there is no jointly defended family territory of the kind seen in biparental substrate-spawning cichlids. The practical consequence is that pair formation is transient — a male holds or courts at a spawning site only long enough to fertilize a clutch, after which the female departs to brood alone. This is the classic African mouthbrooding template shared with the haplochromines and tilapiines, not the pair-bonding cave-spawning of the Tanganyikan lamprologines. As roving benthic foragers rather than territory-bound rock dwellers, these fish appear to defend a spawning location only briefly rather than holding a permanent site. Specific courtship displays, spawning colours and triggers for Tylochromis labrodon are simply undocumented, and it is more honest to flag that gap than to invent detail for it.
Breeding
Tylochromis labrodon is a maternal mouthbrooder, following the genus pattern reported by Stiassny (1989) and Lamboj ("The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa," 2004): the female alone incubates the fertilized eggs and the resulting larvae in her buccal cavity, guarding the developing brood until the fry are released as free-swimming, well-developed young. No clutch count, egg size, incubation period or fry-development data have been published specifically for labrodon. Genus-typical figures give the best available sense of scale: female Tylochromis polylepis, the Tanganyikan congener, have been observed carrying on the order of 100 large eggs roughly 0.5 in in diameter — the classic mouthbrooder trade-off of few, yolky eggs and well-provisioned fry over sheer numbers. A comparable modest clutch of large eggs is the reasonable expectation for labrodon. As with most riverine African mouthbrooders, parental care is provided solely by the female and ends once the fry are large enough to forage independently; the male provides no post-spawning care. Spawning triggers in the wild are unrecorded but, in a seasonal equatorial river, are most plausibly tied to the flood and rainfall cycle.
In the aquarium
Tylochromis labrodon is to all practical purposes absent from the aquarium hobby. It is not commercially traded as an ornamental, no captive-keeping or breeding accounts exist for it, and a keeper is far more likely to encounter the occasionally offered Tanganyikan Tylochromis polylepis than this Congo-river species. Anything useful that can be said about its husbandry is therefore extrapolated from the genus rather than reported from experience, and that distinction should be kept in mind.
If it were kept, it would ask for what every large sand-sifting Tylochromis needs: a long tank with a generous open footprint, since at over 8.5 in it is a deep-bodied, substrate-roaming fish rather than a small rock-dweller. An open bed of fine sand is non-negotiable — these are genuine sifters that work the substrate constantly, and a sand floor is essential both for natural behaviour and to spare the gills the abrasion of coarse gravel. Strong filtration and excellent oxygenation matter more than usual: Tylochromis are noted for marked intolerance of low dissolved oxygen, and the detritus a sifter kicks up demands real filter capacity. Water should mirror the warm, near-neutral conditions of the lowland Congo — roughly 75–84 °F and pH around 6.5–8.0 — without the hard, highly alkaline chemistry the rift-lake species prefer.
Diet would be straightforward: a varied carnivore-leaning regime of quality sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and other insect larvae, and occasional plant matter suits its natural insect-, mollusc- and detritus-based feeding. The likeliest keeper mistakes are the genus-wide ones — housing it as though it were a small rockwork mbuna, under-aerating the tank, or skimping on the open sand bed and tank length it needs to behave normally. It is best regarded as a fish for a specialist with space and an interest in African riverine cichlids, not a candidate for a general community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Tylochromis labrodon as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants; Version 2025-2). The assessment reflects a wide distribution across the central Congo basin and the absence of any identified species-level threat; the fish carries no CITES or CMS listing and is rated of low fishing vulnerability. As a widespread, generalist riverine cichlid it is far less exposed than the many narrow-range endemics of the basin's tributaries and rapids. The honest framing, as for so much of the Congo ichthyofauna, is that the species itself is not flagged but the system it lives in faces accumulating pressure — deforestation and erosion in the catchment, expanding fisheries, pollution around the great urban reach of Malebo Pool between Kinshasa and Brazzaville, and proposed hydropower development on the lower river. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which its long-term status should be read. A further taxonomic caveat bears on conservation bookkeeping: if Decru et al.'s (2017) suggestion that labrodon may be a synonym of Tylochromis lateralis is borne out, the two names would refer to a single, even more widely distributed species.
