Ctenochromis polli is a small haplochromine cichlid of the Congo River basin, described from Pool Malebo (the old "Stanley Pool") at the heart of the Congo and named for the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll. It is a maternal mouthbrooder of shallow, slow-flowing margins, where it grazes a diet built around algae and plant debris. Its name is a taxonomic relic: a 2022 genome-scale revision restricted the genus Ctenochromis to two East African species and showed polli belongs to a different, Congo-centred lineage, so it now sits in the catch-all Haplochromis pending a formal home. It is one of the few Congo haplochromines to carry a Red List assessment, currently Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

The fish was described in 1964 by the Belgian ichthyologist Dirk Frans Elisabeth Thys van den Audenaerde as Haplochromis polli, on material from Pool Malebo — the broad lacustrine widening of the Congo River between Kinshasa and Brazzaville, long known as Stanley Pool — which stands as its type locality. The species honours Max Poll, the Belgian student of African fishes whose surveys of the Stanley Pool fauna it draws on. In 1979 Peter Humphry Greenwood transferred it, along with three other taxa (luluae, oligacanthus, and the Tanganyikan horei), into the genus Ctenochromis Pfeffer, 1893, on the basis of shared chest squamation — scattered scale-free (naked) patches on the breast. That grouping was never universally accepted, and it has now been overturned. Genner and colleagues, in a 2022 genome-wide revision (European Journal of Taxonomy 819), restricted Ctenochromis to its type species Ctenochromis pectoralis and the newly described Ctenochromis scatebra, both endemic to the Pangani drainage and Chemka Springs of Tanzania, and removed the others; molecular work (Schwarzer et al. 2012) had already resolved polli as the sister of Haplochromis oligacanthus, deep within a central- and southern-African haplochromine clade only distantly related to true Ctenochromis. The practical upshot is that the long-used combination "Ctenochromis polli" is no longer considered correct: FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes now list the fish as Haplochromis polli, a placeholder in the notoriously polyphyletic Haplochromis until the Congo radiation is properly revised. We retain the familiar binomial here for continuity with the aquarium and conservation literature, where it remains in wide use.

Morphology

Ctenochromis polli is a small, typical-looking riverine haplochromine. FishBase lists a maximum of 3.5 in total length; hobby and Fishipedia accounts give an average around 3 in with dominant males reaching about 4 in. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed cichlid form, the head bearing the large eye and terminal, slightly oblique mouth of a generalist grazer-picker. Coloration is comparatively muted by the standards of the rift-lake haplochromines — a brassy-tan to greyish ground, often crossed by dark vertical bars that intensify markedly with mood and stress, and males in condition develop the iridescent flush and the small ocellated (egg-spot) markings on the anal fin that are the haplochromine signature. The chest carries the naked, scale-free patches that originally drew the species into Ctenochromis. Sexual dimorphism follows the haplochromine pattern: males grow larger, are more intensely coloured and carry the more developed anal-fin egg-spots, while females are smaller and plainer, a difference that becomes obvious as a brooding female holds eggs in her distended buccal pouch.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the lower and middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its documented range runs from an upstream limit around Luozi-Manianga, through Pool Malebo, downstream to about Kwamouth — that is, the river corridor straddling the boundary between the Malebo Pool and Lower Congo ecoregions and reaching up into the southern margin of the Cuvette Centrale. Within this stretch it is described as very common, favouring shallow, slow-flowing water close to the banks. A study on the lower Djoué (a right-bank affluent at Brazzaville) found it abundant in marginal habitat; popular accounts add that it also turns up in well-oxygenated, current-swept reaches near rapids and falls, over bottoms of sand, mud and humus strewn with pebbles, wood and waterlogged leaf litter, often among marginal and aquatic vegetation. FishBase gives an in-situ temperature band of about 75–79 °F; the soft, mildly acidic blackwater-tinged chemistry typical of these Congo margins is reflected in hobby reports of roughly pH 5.5-6.5 and low hardness. As a near-shore, shallow-water fish it occupies roughly the upper metre or two of the water column rather than the river's deeper channels.

Feeding

Ctenochromis polli is a small-mouthed omnivore that grazes the bottom and the vegetated margins. The most detailed evidence comes from a year-long study of the lower Djoué population by Mabika and colleagues (2019), who examined the stomach contents of 662 specimens taken monthly across a full season. The diet was dominated overwhelmingly by algae (index of preponderance about 65 percent) and plant debris (about 11 percent), with a long tail of incidental items — insects and insect larvae, fish remains (scales, bones and fins), nematodes, annelids, trematodes, plus ingested mud and sand grains that come with bottom grazing. Crucially the diet shifts with size: small fish are essentially herbivorous/detritivorous, but above roughly 3 in standard length the larger individuals take progressively more insects and small fish, acquiring an entomophagous and mildly piscivorous tendency. This ontogenetic broadening — algae-grazer as a juvenile, opportunistic predator-omnivore as an adult — places the species low in the food web (FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.3) and explains the contradictory shorthand labels it attracts, from "feeds on detritus and algae" to "opportunistic predator." Both are correct at different life stages.

Mating

Direct field observations of courtship in this species are scarce, and what can be said is largely inferred from its biology as a maternal mouthbrooding haplochromine and from aquarium experience. Like its relatives it is agamous — that is, it forms no lasting pair bond. Males become territorial when in breeding condition, defending a small patch of substrate and displaying their heightened colour and anal-fin egg-spots to court passing females; aquarium keepers note that the species is easily stressed and signals it by throwing up the dark vertical bars across the body. Mating is polygynous and brief: a receptive female is courted onto the male's site, the two circle, and spawning follows the classic haplochromine sequence in which the female takes the eggs into her mouth almost as they are laid and then mouths at the egg-spots on the male's anal fin, drawing in milt to fertilise the clutch she is already carrying. After spawning the male's role ends and the sexes separate, the female withdrawing to brood alone.

Breeding

Ctenochromis polli is an ovophilic, maternal mouthbrooder: the female alone incubates the fertilised eggs in her buccal cavity and continues to shelter the free-swimming fry there for the first days after they absorb their yolk, taking them back into her mouth at any disturbance. No clutch count has been published specifically for this species; in haplochromines of its small size, broods are correspondingly modest — typically on the order of a few dozen eggs (broadly ~20-60), a genus-typical figure rather than a measured one for polli, and the trade-off for mouthbrooding is few, comparatively large, well-provisioned young. There is no biparental or substrate care: parental investment is entirely the female's, concentrated and prolonged relative to the egg number. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population-doubling time under fifteen months, consistent with the short generation time of a small, early-maturing riverine cichlid. Captive spawnings broadly follow the haplochromine template — warm, well-oxygenated water and good conditioning trigger reproduction — but documented, detailed breeding reports remain thin because the fish is rare in the hobby.

In the aquarium

Ctenochromis polli is a connoisseur's fish rather than a trade staple: it is genuinely rare in the aquarium hobby, kept mostly by specialists working with wild or wild-derived stock and by Congo-biotope enthusiasts. It is not a difficult fish in absolute terms, but it has specific needs that set it apart from the alkaline rift-lake cichlids most aquarists associate with the word "haplochromine." The water should mirror its Congo margins: warm (about 75–79 °F), soft, and acidic to neutral (roughly pH 5.5-6.5), with very low hardness — the opposite of Malawi or Tanganyika water chemistry, and a common reason keepers fail with it. Because part of its range is current-swept, generous filtration and strong oxygenation suit it well; an oversized canister or a powerhead-driven flow keeps the water clean and replicates the rapids-margin habitat, while frequent partial water changes keep nitrate low.

For footprint, a tank in the 300-litre / roughly four-foot class gives a small group room to establish a hierarchy without the territorial males harassing each other or the females to death. The species is best kept as a group of five or more so pairs can form and subordinate fish can avoid the dominant male; it is described as territorial and slightly aggressive, and it will treat anything small enough to swallow as food, so tankmates should be of comparable size or kept in a single-species set-up if breeding is the goal. Décor that reproduces the biotope — a sand-and-fine-gravel bottom, driftwood, leaf litter, rounded stones and dense marginal planting — provides the broken sightlines and refuges that defuse aggression and give a brooding female somewhere to retreat. Feeding is undemanding for an omnivore: a varied diet of quality flake and small pellets supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates, plus an algal or vegetable component (spirulina-based foods, blanched greens) that reflects the heavily herbivorous wild diet, keeps the fish in colour and condition. The common mistakes are predictable ones — keeping it too hard and alkaline, pairing it with fish small enough to become prey, and under-stocking so a single dominant male monopolises the tank.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Ctenochromis polli (as Haplochromis polli) as Vulnerable, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), in an assessment by T. Moelants dated 16 February 2009 and still current on the live Red List. The listing reflects a restricted distribution — a fish tied to a particular reach of the lower and middle Congo around Pool Malebo — coupled with an inferred continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat, the standard basis for a B-criterion Vulnerable rating. It carries no CITES listing and is not assessed under CMS. Against that, the species is locally very common where it occurs and its populations recover quickly (high resilience, low fishing vulnerability), so the concern is habitat-driven rather than a matter of direct exploitation. The pressures bearing on it are those degrading the lower Congo and its tributaries generally: rapid urbanisation and pollution around the Kinshasa-Brazzaville conurbation that flanks Pool Malebo, sedimentation and the clearing of marginal vegetation, and the broader human footprint on a river corridor that, for all its biodiversity, remains lightly protected. As one of relatively few Congo-basin haplochromines to have been formally assessed at all, polli is a useful flag for a fauna whose conservation status is otherwise largely unknown.
