Uaru fernandezyepezi, the Fernández-Yépez's uaru — known in the hobby as the panda uaru — is a deep-bodied, disc-shaped cichlid of the blackwater rivers along the Venezuela–Colombia border, in the upper Orinoco. Described only in 1989 from the Río Atabapo, it is the rarer and more coveted of the two uarus: a soft-water specialist tied to acidic, nearly mineral-free streams, demanding to import and keep, and long regarded as a holy-grail fish among advanced South-American cichlid keepers. Like its relative Uaru amphiacanthoides it is a peaceful, largely vegetarian, schooling cichlid whose fry, in the manner of its close cousins the discus, feed on mucus secreted from their parents' flanks.

Taxonomy & naming

Uaru fernandezyepezi was described by the German aquarist-ichthyologist Rainer Stawikowski in 1989, in Bonner Zoologische Beiträge (volume 40, number 1, page 21, figure 1). The holotype (ZFMK 15757) and a single paratype (ZFMK 15758) are housed in the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn; the type locality is the Río Atabapo, four (or five) kilometres from its mouth at the Río Orinoco, in Venezuela. The species was collected by the fish exporter and tour organizer Hans J. Köpke, at whose request Stawikowski named it. It is one of only two recognized members of the genus Uaru, which Johann Jakob Heckel erected in 1840 for the long-known Uaru amphiacanthoides of the Amazon and Río Negro. The genus belongs to the subfamily Cichlinae (the South American cichlids) and sits within the cichlasomine assemblage; it is most closely allied to Heros (the severums) and, more famously, to the discus (Symphysodon), with which it shares the remarkable habit of mucus-feeding the fry. The validity of Uaru fernandezyepezi has never been seriously questioned, and it carries no junior synonyms — a clean nomenclatural history for a fish that remained undescribed until the late twentieth century largely because of how remote and rarely sampled its blackwater home is.

Morphology

Uaru fernandezyepezi is a tall, strongly laterally compressed cichlid built on the same disc-like plan as a discus or a severum, with a steep forehead and a small mouth. Reported size varies with how it is measured: Kullander (2003) and FishBase give a maximum of about 7.5 in standard length (snout to tail base), while FishBase also cites roughly 9.5 in total length, and trade sources describe fully grown adults at around 10 in — making it noticeably smaller than Uaru amphiacanthoides, which reaches 10–12 in. The species' celebrated adult coloration is the source of its hobby name 'panda uaru': a clean, pale silvery-grey to fawn ground broken by a bold blackish mask through the eye and across the head, a dark band along the lower flank, and dark fins, the high contrast recalling a panda's markings. This pattern intensifies dramatically in breeding dress. Juveniles look entirely different — like young Uaru amphiacanthoides they are dark and covered in scattered pale spots, an unremarkable livery that gives little hint of the striking adult to come. The sexes are not reliably distinguishable by eye; the species is generally considered impossible to sex externally, which is why keepers acquire groups and let pairs form rather than attempting to select a male and female.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the upper Orinoco basin on the Venezuela–Colombia frontier, centred on the Río Atabapo and the connected blackwater systems of the region (including the Inírida and the Casiquiare corridor that links the Orinoco to the Río Negro). In the scheme of freshwater ecoregions it falls within the Orinoco Guiana Shield ecoregion, a landscape of clear- and blackwater streams draining the ancient Guiana Shield, the Atabapo being one of its named principal rivers. These are true blackwaters: stained tea-dark by dissolved tannins, extremely soft, and strongly acidic. The Atabapo runs at a pH of roughly 4.5 — sometimes cited as low as 3–4 — with hardness so low as to be barely detectable and conductivity in the order of tens of microsiemens. Because there are so few dissolved ions and so little buffering, such water is also naturally low in bacteria. It is warm year-round, generally about 82–86 °F, with FishBase citing temperatures up to the low-to-mid 30s. FishBase classifies the fish as benthopelagic and gives a pH range starting at 5.0; in practice the species lives among submerged root tangles, leaf litter and marginal vegetation of these dark, sluggish rivers. It is described as never very abundant even where it occurs, a genuinely uncommon fish in its own habitat.

Feeding

Uaru fernandezyepezi is essentially herbivorous. Adults graze on soft aquatic plants and other vegetable matter, and in captivity they are best maintained on a vegetable-based diet — spirulina and plant-based flakes or pellets, blanched greens, and similar fare — with animal foods offered only as an occasional supplement. This herbivorous-to-omnivorous tendency, combined with a strong appetite for soft plant tissue, is why the species cannot be trusted in a planted aquarium: it will eat the plants. FishBase places its estimated trophic level around 3.3, a model-based figure that likely overstates the animal component of a fish that field and trade observations agree feeds largely on vegetation. In its blackwater home, where productivity is low and the water nutrient-poor, a diet built around plant material, periphyton and detritus among the flooded roots fits both the habitat and what is known of its Amazonian congener, the largely vegetarian Uaru amphiacanthoides.

Mating

Outside of breeding, uarus are gregarious, almost shoaling fish; like the closely related discus they prefer to be kept in a group and spend much of their time loosely associating with their own kind. They are peaceful and even shy, poorly equipped to defend themselves against boisterous tankmates. Because the species cannot be sexed externally, pair formation is a matter of keeping a group of young fish together and allowing two compatible individuals to bond of their own accord. When a pair does form, the fish withdraw from the group and become territorial around a chosen spawning site, the otherwise placid temperament giving way to focused defence of the nest — the familiar pattern of a biparental cichlid shifting from social tolerance to paired territoriality as spawning approaches. Detailed in-situ courtship observations for this rarely encountered fish are scant; what is documented derives chiefly from the small number of captive spawnings and from the well-studied behaviour of its congener.

Breeding

Uaru fernandezyepezi is a biparental substrate spawner, and the captive breeding that has been achieved — including by the describer, Stawikowski — follows the same template as Uaru amphiacanthoides: a bonded pair cleans a firm surface, deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on it, and both parents jointly guard and tend the eggs, larvae and free-swimming fry. The genus' defining reproductive trait is shared with the discus: once the fry are free-swimming they school onto the flanks of their parents and feed on a nutritious mucus that the adults secrete from enlarged skin glands, grazing it directly off the body in the same 'contact feeding' seen in discus and uaru alike. Successful spawning is reported to require the soft, acidic blackwater conditions of the natural habitat; in harder or more alkaline water the species can be grown on but is said not to breed. Precise wild clutch sizes have not been published for this species; congeners and similarly sized Heros-group cichlids typically lay on the order of a few hundred eggs, and FishBase's life-history model uses a representative fecundity figure of around 120. The species has the reputation of a 'problem fish' — difficult both to keep alive and to spawn — so documented breedings remain few.

In the aquarium

The panda uaru is firmly an expert-only fish, and not because it is aggressive — it is one of the gentlest of the larger cichlids. The difficulty is its fragility. Wild imports are notoriously sensitive during acclimation: they react badly to bacterial loads in transport water, to chilling (a real risk on long flights routed through cool highland hubs), and to water that is too hard. Several historical shipments were lost for these reasons, and the species was for years considered almost impossible to import safely. Those problems are better managed today, but the lesson stands — this is a fish for someone who can provide pristine, warm, soft water and very stable conditions.

Provide a large aquarium: these are tall fish that reach around 10 in and prefer to be kept in a group, so a long tank of several hundred litres is the realistic minimum for a small shoal. Warmth is essential — aim for roughly 82–86 °F — and the water should be soft and acidic. Fish can be acclimated to and maintained in somewhat harder, more neutral water (juveniles are often grown on this way), but soft, blackwater-style conditions (very low hardness, pH around 5–6, tannin-stained water over leaf litter and driftwood) suit the species best and are effectively required to breed it. The tank should be biologically mature and impeccably maintained; like Uaru amphiacanthoides, this fish is prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion (hole-in-the-head), so deteriorating water quality must be caught and corrected early.

Do not attempt a planted display — the fish are vegetarian enough to strip live plants — and instead furnish with driftwood, roots and dried leaves, which also help acidify and stain the water. Tankmates should be small and peaceful: the panda uaru mixes well with small tetras (cardinals are natural companions from the same blackwaters), peaceful catfishes such as Corydoras and loricariids, and other calm, soft-water species, but must never be housed with large or rough cichlids it cannot stand up to. Feed a primarily vegetable-based diet. Finally, expect to pay for the privilege: exports from the remote Atabapo region are sporadic and the fish has long commanded premium prices, so it is rarely seen and rarely cheap.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Uaru fernandezyepezi as Vulnerable (criterion B1ab(iii)), assessed on 28 October 2020 by C. Lasso and published in 2023. The listing reflects the species' very small range — it is essentially confined to the Atabapo and adjacent upper-Orinoco blackwaters of Venezuela and Colombia — combined with a continuing decline in habitat quality. The principal documented threats are illegal mining in the region, which degrades and contaminates the rivers, deforestation, heavy-metal (notably mercury) pollution from that mining, and the resulting changes in water quality; the population trend is recorded as unknown. The species is not listed by CITES. Its blackwater home, the Orinoco Guiana Shield ecoregion, is recognised as harbouring distinctive Guiana-Shield endemics, and its headwater streams are specifically flagged as threatened by small-scale hydraulic mining that increases erosion, raises suspended sediment, alters substrates and releases mercury — exactly the pressures the Red List cites for this fish. For a narrow-range blackwater specialist with exacting water needs, that combination of a tiny distribution and an extractive, poorly regulated frontier economy is the core of its vulnerability.
