Think dim and tannin-tinted: leaf litter, branchy driftwood and a dark substrate, with botanicals to lower and buffer the water naturally. Tall plants or floating cover diffuse the light and give a shy fish places to settle.

Hybridization watchi

Apistogramma barlowi is a dwarf cichlid from the forest creeks of northeastern Peru, and one of the quietly remarkable members of a genus already famous for its variety. Described only in 2008, it was the first Apistogramma ever shown to brood its young in the mouth — and it does so facultatively, switching between mouthbrooding and ordinary cave-spawning depending on conditions. Outsized jaws, a lyre-shaped tail, and that flexible parenting set it apart among South America's roughly ninety named dwarf cichlids. Buyers should know one thing up front: a near-identical sister species, Apistogramma megastoma, circulates under the same trade names, so some fish sold as barlowi are not.

Taxonomy & naming

Uwe Römer and Ingo Hahn described Apistogramma barlowi in 2008, in the journal Vertebrate Zoology (58(1): 49–66), from 32 specimens taken in small forest-creek tributaries of the Río Ampiyacu near the village of El Pozo, in Departamento Loreto, far northeastern Peru (roughly 71°55′W, 03°10′S). The species honors George W. Barlow (1929–2007), the UC Berkeley behavioral ichthyologist whose work on cichlid biology shaped much of the field. The genus name combines Greek roots usually read as "uncertain" or "doubtful" with "that which is written" — a nod to the variable, often rudimentary lateral line these little fish carry.

Apistogramma is one of the largest Neotropical cichlid genera, with on the order of ninety valid species and many more undescribed, and specialists sort them into nested lineages, complexes and groups; Apistogramma barlowi anchors its own complex within the cacatuoides assemblage of small-stream species. Hobbyists knew it well before science did. It circulated in the trade from around 1999–2000 as Apistogramma sp. "Masken"/"Maske" (the masked apisto) and as the "Maulbrüter"/"mouthbrooder", under the DATZ code A174, with the trade names "Glaser" for the red form and "Hauswell" for the white. In their description Römer and Hahn weighed, then rejected, the idea that "barlowi" might be two cryptic species — and later fieldwork proved them partly right. A closely similar mouthbrooder long traded as Apistogramma sp. "Kelleri" was split off in 2017 as Apistogramma megastoma, so some older accounts and aquarium stock filed under barlowi in fact belong to that sister species.

Morphology

Apistogramma barlowi is a stocky, deep-bodied dwarf cichlid built around an unusually large head. Males are the showy sex. They grow to roughly 2.5 in (2.5 in) standard length, develop massive jaws and thickened, hypertrophied lips, and carry a lyre-shaped (lyrate) caudal fin split into two color zones — a clean lemon-yellow lower lobe and a bluish, semi-transparent upper lobe marked with vertical rows of pale spots. The leading membranes of the dorsal fin draw out into lappet-like points that lengthen with age. Females stay much smaller, to about 1.6 in (1.5 in), with a truncate, largely unmarked tail (sometimes a yellow flush at its base), a distinct breast band at the base of the second vertical bar, and a posterior lateral spot.

Color varies by population. Two non-sympatric forms are recognized: a "red" form with reddish head markings and an overall darker pattern, and a paler "white" form that lacks the red. Both forms lack the caudal-peduncle spot that many congeners show, and both carry three infraorbital pores — small details that, with the oversized head and jaws, separate Apistogramma barlowi from its look-alikes. Color alone is unreliable here: the near-identical Apistogramma megastoma is told apart mainly by subtle pattern differences and a higher number of cheek scale rows, not by anything obvious in a dealer's tank.

Habitat

Apistogramma barlowi appears to be a narrow-range endemic of the upper Amazon basin in Peru, known with confidence only from small streams in the Río Ampiyacu drainage, northwest of the town of Pebas in Departamento Loreto. The Ampiyacu is a left-bank affluent of the Amazon (Solimões) mainstream — white- and clearwater upland-forest country rather than the deep blackwater of the central Amazon — yet the specific creeks the fish favors run clear, soft and acidic, true blackwater igarapé conditions.

The described habitat is a textbook Apistogramma igarapé: a shaded forest brook only about 3 ft wide and 12 in deep, its bottom fine white sand with no rooted plants or rocks. The water was strikingly soft and acidic, with a pH near 4.8, conductivity around 26 µS/cm, and a temperature close to 84 °F (84 °F); the fish showed a clear preference for cooler, fast-flowing, crystal-clear water. In the type creek it shared the stream with the far more widespread Apistogramma agassizii. Because its known range is so small and tied to those particular small-stream conditions, its fate is bound to local forest creeks rather than to the broad Amazon itself.

Feeding

Like its congeners, Apistogramma barlowi is a benthic micro-predator — a small carnivore that works the stream bottom and leaf litter for tiny invertebrates. FishBase places it near a trophic level of about 3.4, consistent with a diet of aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other small invertebrates sifted from sand and detritus. The oversized jaws and mouth are not for taking larger prey; in males they serve as a display structure and a brood chamber (see Breeding), while the fish forages much as other dwarf cichlids do.

In its leaf-littered, low-nutrient creek, Apistogramma barlowi fills the small-cichlid niche shared across the genus: locally numerous enough to link the stream's invertebrate fauna to its larger predators, yet itself vulnerable to bigger fish and to terrestrial hunters at the water's edge. Detailed wild-diet studies specific to this species are lacking, so the picture is drawn from the genus and from in-situ observation rather than a dedicated stomach-content analysis — a fair caution given how recently the fish was described.

Mating

By the social standards of the genus, Apistogramma barlowi is on the rougher side — a mismatched pair can leave both fish battered, though toward its own kind it is comparatively mild for an Apistogramma. Pairs form around a defended spawning cave or shelter, with the female soliciting and tending the site much as in any cave-spawning apisto. Keepers agree the pairing is uneasy enough to demand space: a single pair settles best on a base of at least 24 × 12 in (60 × 12 in), and does visibly better on a 2 × 3 ft footprint, where small, peaceful surface dithers such as pencilfish (Nannostomus) or cardinal tetras give the pair confidence and take the edge off the friction between them.

Courtship plays out under the same demanding water chemistry the fish needs to breed at all. This is a species of extremely soft, acidic creeks, and pairs come into condition only at low pH — keepers report best results below 6.0 — with negligible carbonate hardness and clean, mature water free of dissolved organic waste. It should not share a tank with other Apistogramma, both to spare the pair the stress and to avoid hybridization with similar species. Get the chemistry and the company right and the pair bonds and spawns readily; get them wrong and courtship collapses into aggression.

Breeding

Breeding is what makes Apistogramma barlowi famous. It is a larvophilous, facultative, biparental mouthbrooder — the first such case ever documented in Apistogramma, and one of only a handful of mouthbrooders known across the whole genus. In the typical sequence the female lays her eggs on the roof of a cave or shelter and tends them like an ordinary cave-spawning apisto; only after the eggs hatch may a parent take the larvae into the mouth. This does not happen every time, and either sex — or, rarely, both — may do the carrying. Because the mouth is used for the wrigglers rather than the eggs, this delayed, larvophilous mode is exactly what sets the fish apart from the maternal egg-brooders of the African Great Lakes.

The trigger appears to be environmental, which is the genuinely interesting part. Laboratory observations reported in the original description found that more females mouthbrooded over fine sand, while under strong water flow it was exclusively males that picked up the brood; over coarse gravel, adults often delayed for days or never carried at all. The presence of fry predators also seems to push parents toward mouthbrooding. The behavior reads best as a recently evolved, not-yet-fixed strategy laid over the genus's ancestral substrate-brooding — a fish caught in evolutionary mid-stride. Independent keepers corroborate the core pattern: on the apistogramma.com forum, longtime moderator Mike Wise describes a larvophilous delayed mouthbrooder that switches on most reliably over fine sand and with fry predators present, with some breeders reporting broods carried entirely in the mouth and others seeing females hold for only a few days. To witness the mouthbrooding rather than plain cave-spawning, the recurring advice is fine sand, soft acidic water, and leaving the mother with her fry, which depend heavily on maternal signals and fare poorly when stripped and reared apart.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma barlowi is a fish for a small, dedicated circle of dwarf-cichlid specialists — not a chain-store buy — and it demands a setup to match.

Tank: a pair can live on a 24 × 12 in (60 × 12 in) footprint, but a 30 × 12 in or larger base is noticeably better, giving the female escape room when the male turns pushy; a single male with two females works well across a 36 × 12 in (90 × 12 in) floor once established. Heights of 12–15 in are plenty for this bottom-oriented fish, which rarely ventures past mid-water, and a tight lid is wise — like most dwarf cichlids it will leap.

Water: chemistry is non-negotiable. Target pH 5.0–5.8, near-zero carbonate hardness, and a total hardness under 4 °dH, with RO or rainwater cut with peat-softened or blackwater-extract water as the standard approach — this is not optional here. Breeding stalls above pH 6.0, and the fish look and behave noticeably worse at pH 7 or in unconditioned tap water. Hold temperature in the 75–82 °F (75–82 °F) range, the lower end day to day and the upper end to bring fish into breeding condition. A mature, well-filtered tank with low nitrate and no ammonia is essential, because these chemistry extremes leave no buffer for neglect.

Aquascape: mimic the igarapé. Use a fine white or cream sand bed at least 2 in (2 in) deep — critical for the mouthbrooding trigger (see Breeding) — a generous scatter of dried Indian almond or oak leaves, and several small caves or coconut-shell halves placed so the female has more hiding spots than the male can guard at once. Dim or diffused light suits the fish and shows their color better; floating plants block overhead glare, and fine-leaved species such as Taxiphyllum or Eleocharis tolerate the low pH and add cover. A moderate flow rather than a still tank also seems to shape parental behavior, with strong current pushing males toward carrying the brood.

Tankmates: avoid all other Apistogramma — the near-identical Apistogramma megastoma circulates in the trade, and the two should never share a tank given the hybridization risk and the confusion it breeds in the hobby. Peaceful upper-water dithers — small tetras such as rummy-nose or cardinal, Nannostomus pencilfish, or hatchetfish — ease inter-pair tension and give the cichlids something to watch besides each other. Skip anything large enough to eat dwarf-cichlid fry and any boisterous fin-nipper. Dwarf shrimp (Neocaridina, Caridina) do not mix with breeding Apistogramma; expect the female to treat shrimplets as food once larvae appear.

Common mistakes: keeping the pair at neutral or alkaline pH and wondering why they never spawn; using coarse gravel that suppresses the mouthbrooding; stripping the female of her larvae to rear them artificially, when the fry are wired to follow and respond to her and survival drops sharply without her; and confusing the fish with Apistogramma megastoma, mixed in the trade since long before megastoma was described. Sexing is easy — males dwarf females and carry the unmistakable lyrate tail, and breeding females turn yellower overall. Get the chemistry, the substrate and the tankmates right, and this is one of the most intellectually rewarding spawnings in the genus.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma barlowi as Least Concern (Chuctaya, Correa & Ortega; published 24 April 2014). There is no evidence of population decline, the genus scores high for resilience and low for fishing vulnerability, and the species is not listed by CITES. Even so, that rating reflects the absence of documented threats more than positive proof of security, because the fish is known from a very small area and was described only recently. Its main human contact is the ornamental trade — wild-caught Apistogramma barlowi reach hobbyists periodically — but collection pressure on a small, locally common dwarf cichlid is modest next to the habitat-level pressures around it.

Those pressures are the real story for an upper-Amazon stream endemic. The broader Amazon basin and its cichlid fauna — catalogued in the standard reference works on Neotropical fishes, notably Kullander's Cichlidae treatment in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003) and the ecological synthesis tradition of Lowe-McConnell — face deforestation, sedimentation and changes in stream hydrology rather than the wholesale collapse seen in some lake fisheries. A fish tied to clear, soft, fast-flowing forest creeks is exposed to exactly those local changes: clearing riparian forest, warming and silting small streams, or altering flow can degrade the igarapé conditions Apistogramma barlowi needs, even where the wider river system looks healthy. The honest summary is that the species itself is currently of low conservation concern, but its narrow range and specialized habitat mean its security depends on the continued integrity of the small Loreto forest streams it calls home — a margin thinner than its Red List status alone might suggest.
