Acanthocharax microlepis is a small, slender characid endemic to the Guiana Shield drainages of Guyana, known from the Potaro and Mazaruni river systems that feed into the Essequibo. Described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912 from the Potaro River at Tumatumari, it remains one of the least-known members of the subfamily Characinae — a compact fish reaching about 3.5 in standard length that inhabits clear, soft, low-pH blackwater streams among aquatic vegetation and rocky substrates with riverweed. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2020, noting a stable population within its restricted Essequibo basin range.

Taxonomy & naming

Acanthocharax microlepis was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, based on material collected at Tumatumari on the Potaro River in British Guiana (now Guyana). The description appeared in Eigenmann's comprehensive survey of British Guiana fishes published in the Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum — a foundational work for neotropical characid taxonomy. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes) records the valid name as Acanthocharax microlepis Eigenmann, 1912; the authority is not parenthesised, as the species has never been moved to a different genus since its original description.

The genus Acanthocharax is placed in the subfamily Characinae within the large family Characidae. Characinae is a predominantly South American grouping of characids often associated with fast-flowing or blackwater habitats in lowland river basins. The specific epithet microlepis is from the Greek mikros (small) and lepis (scale), referring to the fish's notably small scales — a feature that helps distinguish it from related characids. Historical records of the species from Colombia have since been shown by IUCN assessors to represent misidentifications; the species is now considered endemic to Guyana.

Morphology

Acanthocharax microlepis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, making it a small to mid-sized member of its subfamily. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the manner typical of many characids, adapted to life in flowing water. The species is characterised by the small scales implied by its name, which give it a finely textured appearance relative to other characids of similar size.

Beyond size, scale count, and its placement in Characinae, detailed published morphological data for this species are sparse in accessible literature. It shares the basic characid bauplan: a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and the toothed jaws that define the order Characiformes. Colour pattern in life has not been extensively described in the available literature.

Habitat

Acanthocharax microlepis inhabits freshwater rivers and streams of the Essequibo River basin in Guyana, specifically the Potaro and Mazaruni drainages on the Guiana Shield. The type locality is Tumatumari, a site on the Potaro River where Eigenmann's 1912 expedition collected extensively. This region of the Guiana Shield is characterised by ancient, weathered basement rock and nutrient-poor soils that produce the clear to tea-coloured blackwater rivers for which the area is known.

The IUCN assessment describes the species' habitat as inland wetlands — rivers and streams — with high water transparency, low pH, low dissolved minerals, and substrates of sand and rock supporting aquatic vegetation and Podostemaceae (riverweed) on rocky surfaces. These are the soft, acidic, mineral-poor conditions typical of Guiana Shield blackwater systems, very different from the harder, more turbid waters of lowland várzea rivers. The species is recorded as pelagic in FishBase, suggesting it occupies the open water column of these streams rather than living among bottom detritus.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies of Acanthocharax microlepis appear in the available literature. As a member of the subfamily Characinae in the speciose order Characiformes, it is likely an opportunistic predator or omnivore in the water column, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the surface — as is typical of small characids in Guiana Shield streams.

The low-productivity, blackwater habitat it occupies tends to support invertebrate communities tied to leaf litter, aquatic vegetation, and the Podostemaceae-covered rock surfaces described in the IUCN assessment. Until dedicated dietary or stomach-content studies are conducted for this species, precise feeding ecology remains undocumented.

Mating

Specific mating behaviour of Acanthocharax microlepis has not been documented in the published literature accessible to this account. Based on its membership in Characiformes — the order to which the vast majority of South American tetras and characids belong — it almost certainly employs the ancestral egg-scattering open-spawning strategy typical of the group, with males pursuing and courting females prior to egg release.

In Guiana Shield streams, characid spawning is often associated with the onset of the rainy season, when rising water levels and temperatures trigger reproductive activity. Fine-leaved aquatic vegetation and submerged roots likely serve as egg deposition sites, as in related characids, though this is inferred from the clade rather than from direct observation of A. microlepis.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Acanthocharax microlepis are known from hobbyist or scientific literature. The species is not established in the aquarium trade and is rarely if ever kept by aquarists, so the accumulated knowledge base for breeding in captivity that exists for popular tetras does not exist for this fish.

By analogy with other egg-scattering Characinae, breeding in captivity would likely involve soft, slightly acidic water replicating the low-mineral, low-pH conditions of Guiana Shield blackwater streams, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg substrate, and separation of adults from eggs after spawning to prevent predation. These are inferences from the wider clade; no first-hand breeding data are available for this species.

In the aquarium

Acanthocharax microlepis is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It does not appear to have been exported commercially in significant numbers, and no established husbandry literature exists for the species. Its Guiana Shield habitat — soft, acidic, clear blackwater with low conductivity — gives a clear direction for water chemistry if the species were ever to be kept: temperatures in the tropical range around 75–82 °F, pH well below neutral (likely 5.5–7.0), very low hardness, and good water quality with moderate flow.

Given its small maximum size of 3.5 in SL and its inferred open-water, schooling behaviour typical of small Characinae, it would likely require a well-planted tank with open swimming space, soft water, and peaceful tankmates of similar size and temperament. In the absence of any hobbyist records, these are broad inferences from the species' ecology and its relatives. Any aquarist who encounters this fish in the trade would be in essentially uncharted territory.

Conservation

Acanthocharax microlepis was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List in December 2020, published in 2022, by assessors Donald C. Taphorn and Douglas Rodríguez-Olarte. The assessment found the population to be stable within its known range in the Essequibo River basin — the Potaro and Mazaruni drainages of Guyana — and identified no immediate threat of sufficient magnitude to elevate the category. The extent of occurrence is confined to Guiana Shield tributaries of the Essequibo; prior records from Colombia were reinterpreted as misidentifications, narrowing the recognised range to Guyana alone.

The primary historical threat identified in the IUCN assessment is artisanal gold mining (garimpo), which causes localised sedimentation, mercury contamination, and habitat disturbance in Guiana Shield rivers including the Potaro and Mazaruni systems. The Potaro basin in particular has experienced significant mining pressure in parts of its catchment. Despite this, the species' population was judged stable at the time of assessment, and the blackwater habitats it occupies across the broader Essequibo system provide a sufficiently large range that localised mining impacts do not currently threaten it at a population level. Continued monitoring of mining expansion and its effects on Guiana Shield stream habitats remains prudent.
