Taxonomy & naming
Acrobrycon ipanquianus was originally described as Tetragonopterus ipanquianus by the American palaeontologist and naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1877, based on material from the Andean piedmont region of what is now Peru. Tetragonopterus was a broadly applied holding genus for new-world characids in the nineteenth century; most species placed there have since been distributed among more natural genera as the systematics of the family were revised. The species was transferred to Acrobrycon and is currently accepted under the combination Acrobrycon ipanquianus (Cope, 1877), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the change of genus from that in the original description.
Acrobrycon is a small, predominantly Andean genus within the family Characidae. FishBase notes that the broader group has historically been reclassified in the context of Stevardiidae, a family-level segregation that some authorities accept and others fold back into a broadly circumscribed Characidae; for this atlas the name Characidae is retained as the family, following the treatment used in Catalog of Fishes and the cache sources. A revision by Arcila and colleagues (2013) addressed the phylogenetic placement of Acrobrycon and closely related inseminating characids, confirming that the genus is characterised by scale counts and body proportions that distinguish it from congeners. A note by Burns and colleagues (1995) recorded internal insemination in an unidentified Acrobrycon species, a reproductive mode that is rare but not unique in the family and that may apply to A. ipanquianus.
The type-locality epithet ipanquianus refers to Ipanqui (a locality in the Andean piedmont of Peru), grounding the species in the Andean foothills that define the core of the genus's range.
Morphology
Acrobrycon ipanquianus reaches a maximum recorded length of 4.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, though most individuals in the trade are reported at around 4.5 in total length. The body is elongated and fusiform, consistent with a benthopelagic lifestyle in moderate-flow Andean foothill streams. FishBase records 10 dorsal soft rays, a meristic value that, together with scale counts and body proportions, serves to distinguish this species from its congeners.
The common trade name Sapphire Tetra suggests a metallic or iridescent lateral sheen — a blue-silver reflective line or flank lustre — that makes the fish more striking in aquarium lighting than a plain description would imply. Beyond this and the general elongated characid form, detailed morphological data in accessible sources for this species is sparse; the original 1877 description remains the primary morphological reference.
Habitat
The species occupies the Andean piedmont streams and foothill drainages of the western and southwestern Amazon basin in Peru and Bolivia, and the northwestern reaches of the Río de la Plata basin in Argentina. This Andean piedmont zone is characterised by clear, oxygen-rich, fast to moderate-flow water fed by Andean snowmelt and rainfall, with substrates typically of sand, gravel, and cobble. The subtropical designation given by FishBase reflects the cooler thermal regime of piedmont elevations relative to lowland Amazonian habitats.
Benthopelagic fishes of this zone tend to occupy mid-water and near-bottom niches in the water column, exploiting invertebrate drift and benthic prey. The broad distribution from Peru and Bolivia south into Argentina indicates tolerance of the thermal and hydrological gradients encountered across this extensive piedmont arc, though detailed in-situ habitat surveys for A. ipanquianus specifically are not widely reported in accessible literature.
Feeding
Aqua Imports describes Acrobrycon ipanquianus as an omnivore and micropredator, a feeding guild consistent with its benthopelagic lifestyle and its origin in Andean foothill streams, where the diet likely includes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates drifting or living near the substrate, supplemented by plant or algal material.
In the aquarium it is reported to accept a typical omnivore diet — quality prepared foods (flake, small pellets) supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. As with most small characids, varied feeding maintains condition and colour best.
Mating
Detailed courtship observations for Acrobrycon ipanquianus are not documented in accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. The genus Acrobrycon has been noted in connection with internal insemination — Burns and colleagues (1995) recorded this mode in an unidentified Acrobrycon species, which would be unusual among tetras if it applies here. Most small characids are egg-scatterers with no parental care, depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, but internal insemination, if confirmed for this species, would imply a more intimate spawning contact between the sexes.
Until species-specific spawning observations are published, the mating biology of A. ipanquianus in detail remains uncertain. Aquarists keeping this species should observe courtship behaviour carefully, as any documentation would be a meaningful contribution to the known natural history of this rarely kept fish.

If the insemination behaviour noted for the genus by Burns et al. In the absence of documented spawning data, aquarists interested in breeding this species should use setups appropriate for small Andean-foothill characids generally: soft, slightly acidic to neutral, cool water in the mid-20s Celsius or slightly below, with dense fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, separation of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation, and small first foods (infusoria, rotifers) for any resulting fry. Any successful breeding outcomes would be valuable to document and share.
In the aquarium
Acrobrycon ipanquianus is uncommonly seen in the trade, marketed under the name Sapphire Tetra where it does appear. A 40-gallon (approximately 40 US gal) aquarium is cited as a suitable minimum by at least one trade source, consistent with the species' adult size of up to 4.5 in SL and its likely preference for open swimming space. Like most Andean-foothill characids, it should be kept in schools rather than singly or in pairs; the natural social structure of these fishes is shoaling, and isolation produces stress and reduced colour display.
Water parameters should reflect the cooler, cleaner piedmont origin: temperatures in the low to mid-20s Celsius, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and high oxygenation with gentle to moderate flow. Good filtration and water quality are important. The fish is peaceful toward similarly sized companions and can be kept in a community with other non-aggressive mid-water species of comparable size. Because it is rarely offered in the hobby, tank-bred stock is valuable; hobbyists acquiring this species are encouraged to attempt captive breeding and to document and share any breeding observations.
Conservation
Acrobrycon ipanquianus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 22 September 2020 and conducted by Fernando Carvajal-Vallejos. The LC designation reflects the species' broad distribution across the Andean piedmont of Peru, Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina — a range spanning multiple river drainages — and the absence of evidence for population-level declines that would trigger a threatened category.
The piedmont streams it inhabits face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, deforestation of Andean slopes, and water extraction, but these pressures have not been assessed as driving range-wide declines for this species at the time of the 2020 evaluation. As with many South American stream fishes, continued monitoring is warranted; any narrowing of range or significant habitat loss in the Andean foothill zone could alter the species' status in future assessments.
