Amazonichthys camelierae is a miniature characin described in 2023 from the Rio Jamanxim drainage, a tributary of the Rio Tapajós in Pará State, Brazil. Reaching only about 1 in standard length, it belongs to a newly erected genus distinguished by two conspicuous midlateral stripes and a suite of osteological characters that separate it from the broader Characidae. As a recently described species it remains unassessed by the IUCN, but its restricted range within the Tapajós basin places it squarely in a region of intense Amazonian deforestation pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

Amazonichthys camelierae was described by Esguícero & Mendonça in 2023. The description erected the new genus Amazonichthys to accommodate three small characins sharing a distinctive set of characters, with A. lindeae designated as the type species. Amazonichthys camelierae is known from the Rio Jamanxim, a major right-bank tributary of the Rio Tapajós in Pará State, Brazil.

The genus is diagnosed principally by two conspicuous midlateral stripes — an anterior dark brown stripe and a narrower posterior dark row running from the dorsal-fin origin to the caudal peduncle — combined with internally implanted dentary teeth and a pseudotympanum formed by an epaxialis musculature bundle. These characters separate Amazonichthys from superficially similar small characins in the family Characidae. The valid name, as recorded on FishBase and consistent with the original description, is Amazonichthys camelierae Esguícero & Mendonça, 2023.

Morphology

Amazonichthys camelierae is a miniature fish, reaching approximately 1 in standard length. Like the other species in the genus it displays the pair of midlateral stripes that define Amazonichthys: a dark brown stripe on the anterior flank and a narrower dark band running posteriorly from the dorsal-fin insertion to the base of the caudal fin. This two-stripe pattern gives the genus a distinctive lateral profile among the many small characins of Amazonian tributary systems.

The species also shares the genus-level osteological characters: dentary teeth that are implanted internally rather than on the dentary margin, and the pseudotympanum structure involving the epaxialis musculature. Beyond these diagnostic features, detailed external morphometrics are not available in the pre-publication literature accessed here; the small body size and miniature characin body plan are the primary impressions the fish gives in life.

Habitat

Amazonichthys camelierae is known from the Rio Jamanxim drainage within the larger Rio Tapajós basin, Pará State, Brazil. The Rio Tapajós is one of the major southern tributaries of the Amazon, draining a vast area of the Brazilian Shield. The Rio Jamanxim flows through a region of transitional forest and cerrado-edge habitat that has faced significant deforestation and land-use change.

The species is recorded as freshwater and benthopelagic. Amazonian tributary streams in this region are typically warm and often acidic, with pH driven down by organic acids leaching from forest soils and leaf litter. No specific water-parameter records for the collection locality are available in the sources consulted; tropical Amazonian streams generally fall in the range of 75–86 °F and pH 5.5–7.0, though conditions vary substantially between white-water, clear-water, and black-water systems within the Tapajós basin.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Amazonichthys camelierae. By analogy with related miniature Amazonian characins, the species is likely an opportunistic micro-predator or omnivore in the wild, consuming small invertebrates, zooplankton, insect larvae, and perhaps microalgae or organic particles in the benthopelagic zone of small streams.

Given the fish's very small size — under 1.5 in standard length — prey items would necessarily be minute: copepods, small chironomid larvae, and similar invertebrates of the stream benthos and water column. No aquarium feeding observations are on record for this species, which remains essentially unknown in the hobby as of the time of description.

Mating

No mating observations have been published for Amazonichthys camelierae. As a member of the family Characidae, it can be assumed with reasonable confidence to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care, the reproductive strategy that characterises the overwhelming majority of characins. Males of many small characins exhibit little obvious dimorphism at rest but display courtship behaviour involving fin erection and lateral positioning near receptive females.

In the closely allied miniature Amazonian characins, spawning typically involves brief adhesive-egg deposition among fine-leaved plants or substrate detritus, with eggs hatching in 24–72 hours depending on temperature. Until the species is maintained in captivity and documented, all breeding details for A. camelierae remain inferred from family-level biology.

Breeding

No captive breeding records exist for Amazonichthys camelierae as of 2023. The species has not entered the ornamental trade and is known only from the original scientific description based on museum specimens. Assuming the egg-scattering mode typical of Characidae, breeding would involve adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, with no parental care and adults that would readily consume their own eggs given access.

If the species were ever maintained in aquaria, the approach used for other miniature Amazonian characins — soft, slightly acidic, warm water (75–82 °F); fine-leaved plants or spawning mops; separation of adults after spawning; very small first foods such as infusoria and rotifers — would represent the logical starting point. The miniature adult size suggests very small eggs and tiny fry requiring correspondingly fine-particled nutrition.

In the aquarium

Amazonichthys camelierae is not in the ornamental trade and is unknown in the aquarium hobby as of its description in 2023. The fish is a scientifically described species collected from a Brazilian river system, but no commercial collection or captive husbandry has been recorded. Its very small adult size would make it suitable, in principle, for nano-aquaria and species tanks alongside other miniature Amazonian fishes, but no practical husbandry data exist.

Aquarists interested in this genus should monitor the specialist literature and hobbyist contacts in Brazil, where occasional undescribed or newly described miniature characins do occasionally appear in the trade. Water conditions for the broader Tapajós basin would guide any initial husbandry attempt: soft, warm, slightly acidic to neutral water with good filtration and subdued lighting to replicate shaded Amazonian stream conditions.

Conservation

Amazonichthys camelierae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2023, it is too recently named to have been evaluated under the IUCN Categories and Criteria process, which typically follows description by some years. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE).

The species is known from the Rio Jamanxim drainage of the Tapajós basin in Pará State — a region that has experienced among the highest deforestation rates in the Brazilian Amazon. The Rio Jamanxim area is subject to agricultural encroachment, illegal logging, and the hydrological impacts of road infrastructure. A small characin with an apparently restricted distribution in a single tributary drainage may be inherently vulnerable to habitat loss, though the extent and true distribution of the species within the basin remain to be established by further collecting.
