Aphyocharacidium melandetum was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912 under the name Odontostilbe melandetus, placed in the then-current genus for small Guianan characids of this type. The valid name is Aphyocharacidium melandetum (Eigenmann, 1912) as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; the parenthetical authority signals that the species has since been moved out of Eigenmann's original genus. The genus Aphyocharacidium belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the family Characidae.
Records from Brazil, Ecuador, and French Guiana that were formerly attributed to this species are now considered misidentifications according to the IUCN assessment. The species is therefore treated as a Guyanese endemic, confined to a single river drainage. This restricted and revised distribution is critical context for interpreting both its rarity and its conservation status.
Morphology
A. melandetum is a miniature, elongate characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of Aphyocharacidium it has the compact, streamlined body plan typical of small Guianan stream tetras, with the characteristic features of the family — an adipose fin, a forked tail, and cycloid scales. The common name Blackline Tetra reflects the dark lateral stripe that runs the length of the body, a pattern common in small characids of similar ecological niche.
Detailed meristic data are sparse in the available literature beyond the size record. The species' small adult size places it among the diminutive end of the family, comparable in scale to other Guianan micro-tetras.
Habitat
The type locality is a side pool at the mouth of the Konawaruk River, a tributary of the Essequibo River in Guyana. FishBase also records the species from the upper Branco River drainage (Amazon Basin), though the IUCN assessment notes that non-Guyanese records may represent misidentifications and treats the species as endemic to Guyana.
The IUCN assessment characterises the habitat as tea-coloured blackwater with low pH, low dissolved nutrients, high transparency, and rock and sand substrate — the classic profile of a Guiana Shield clearwater or blackwater stream. These are typically soft, acidic, nutrient-poor waters derived from ancient granitic and sandstone catchments. The Konawaruk River region sits within a geologically ancient landscape where such water chemistry is the baseline, and the species appears well-adapted to these specific conditions.
Feeding
The IUCN assessment records A. melandetum as feeding on small aquatic invertebrates. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of similarly sized Guianan characids, which typically take microcrustaceans, small insect larvae, worms, and other invertebrate prey at or near the substrate and in the water column.
In an aquarium context, small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and finely crushed dry food — would be appropriate offerings, though captive husbandry records for this species are limited.
Mating
Like other small characids, A. melandetum is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner. The IUCN assessment confirms the species is oviparous. No detailed courtship or spawning observations for this species appear in the available literature.
In analogous small characids, males typically pursue females through fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle among plant matter or on the bottom. Breeding
Documented captive breeding of A. melandetum is not recorded in the available literature. Aphyocharacidium melandetum is not an established aquarium fish and is not regularly available in the hobby. Its requirements for soft, acidic, low-nutrient water and its very small adult size would make it suited to a specialised blackwater biotope aquarium with gentle filtration, minimal flow, and tankmates of similar size and temperament.
Given its conservation status and narrow natural distribution, wild collection cannot be recommended. Any hobbyist interest in the species should focus on captive-bred sources if they ever become available, and on conditions that replicate the Guiana Shield blackwater habitat — low pH, low hardness, dark-stained water, and a fine sand or leaf-litter substrate.
Conservation
Aphyocharacidium melandetum is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment carried out in December 2020 and published in 2022 by Taphorn and Rodríguez-Olarte. The estimated extent of occurrence is 10,226 mi², and the species is considered to occupy three threat locations. Population trend is assessed as stable at the time of assessment, but ongoing threats are serious.
The primary threat is gold mining and quarrying in the Konawaruk River region, which is documented as ongoing, affecting an estimated 50% of the species' range, and causing very rapid habitat degradation. The IUCN assessment notes no protected areas covering the known range, no museum recovery plan, and no systematic population monitoring. The species is not known to occur within any formally protected area. These combined factors — restricted range, single confirmed drainage, active industrial threat, and absence of any formal protection or monitoring — underpin the Vulnerable listing and indicate a species whose status warrants continued attention.
