Taxonomy & naming
Aulixidens eugeniae was described by the American ichthyologist James E. Böhlke in 1952 in a paper titled 'Studies on fishes of the family Characidae. No. 1. A new genus of Cheirodontine characids from the Canal de Casiquiare and adjacent waters,' published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 12). The type locality is the Curamoni River, a tributary of the Casiquiare Canal in Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Aulixidens eugeniae Böhlke, 1952.
Aulixidens is a monospecific genus — it contains only this one species — and was placed by Böhlke within the Cheirodontinae, a subfamily of small-bodied characids. Some subsequent treatments, including FishBase, have listed the species under the family Stevardiinae (Stevardiidae), reflecting ongoing revision of higher-level characid systematics; the IUCN Red List assessment recognises it within Characidae. Here we follow the Catalog of Fishes and record the family as Characidae.
The specific epithet eugeniae is a Latin feminine patronym, likely honouring a woman named Eugenia, though the original description's precise dedication is not elaborated in available secondary sources.
Morphology
Aulixidens eugeniae is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum recorded size of 1.5 in standard length. Like most cheirodontine or allied characids, the body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, with a small head, large eyes relative to snout length, and a short, terminal mouth. The anal fin is the most diagnostically notable feature, carrying 19–22 soft rays — an unusually high count for such a small fish and the character that helped define Aulixidens as a distinct genus.
Live colouration data are sparse in the available literature, which is unsurprising for a small, rarely exported fish from remote Guiana Shield waters. The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the lower and middle water column over sand, gravel, and rock substrates in clear to blackwater conditions. Habitat
Aulixidens eugeniae is distributed across the Guiana Shield headwater rivers of southern Venezuela, with confirmed records from the Casiquiare Canal, and the Ventuari, Sipapo, Caura, Capanaparo, Cinaruco, Pamoni, Cuao, Guapuchí, and Manapiare rivers. The type locality, the Curamoni River, drains into the Casiquiare — the natural canal linking the Orinoco and Amazon basins. The species also occurs within the protected area of Yapacana National Park.
The rivers of the Guiana Shield are divided broadly into clearwater and blackwater types, both typically soft, acidic, and low in dissolved nutrients. Temperatures in these tropical upland drainages remain warm year-round. The species occupies a benthopelagic niche over sand, gravel, and rock substrates in freshwater environments, and the IUCN notes it as associated with the low llanos rivers and Guiana Shield drainages rather than the large turbid rivers of the broader Orinoco system.
Water chemistry is characteristically extreme by the standards of most freshwater fishes: pH in true blackwater rivers of the Guiana Shield can fall below 4.5, and conductivity values are often single-digit µS/cm. Even clearwater Shield rivers tend toward acidity and softness.
Feeding

The species is rarely, if ever, available in the hobby, so captive breeding has not been meaningfully documented.

Aulixidens eugeniae is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and is not commercially traded. Its remote, protected distribution — the upper Orinoco tributaries and Casiquiare region of southern Venezuela — means that collection for the ornamental trade is minimal and practically absent. No captive husbandry notes appear in the accessible literature.
If ever obtained, the species would demand the soft, highly acidic conditions typical of Guiana Shield fishes: very low conductivity, pH likely in the range of 4.5–6.5, and warm temperatures. At 1.5 in maximum length it would be suited only to small tank environments and would require appropriately scaled live or frozen foods. For most aquarists, Aulixidens eugeniae is a species of scientific interest only; allied species from the same river systems offer more practical alternatives for hobbyists seeking true blackwater characids from the Guiana Shield.
Conservation
Aulixidens eugeniae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated on 8 November 2020 (published in the 2021–2 update). The listing reflects a relatively wide distribution across multiple Guiana Shield drainages in Venezuela, occurrence within the protected boundary of Yapacana National Park, and the absence of evidence for rapid population decline.
The primary identified threat is artisanal and small-scale gold mining within parts of the species' range, which degrades water quality through sedimentation and mercury contamination. The Guiana Shield is one of the most biodiverse and least-disturbed freshwater regions in South America, but mining pressure has intensified in recent decades.
