The ruby tetra is one of the smallest and most vividly coloured characins in the hobby: a fish rarely exceeding 1 in in standard length whose wild colouration is an intense, gem-like red that fades stubbornly to near-transparency in most aquarium conditions. Native to blackwater tributaries of the upper Río Meta basin in Colombia — a drainage of the Orinoco — Axelrodia riesei was described in 1966 by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry and remains the best-known member of its genus. Keeping the species at its best demands replication of the soft, acidic, heavily tannin-stained water of its home streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Axelrodia riesei was described by Jacques Géry in 1966. The type locality is given as the upper Río Meta basin, in the eastern Llanos of Colombia, to the east of Villavicencio — a region of blackwater streams draining toward the Orinoco system. The valid name, as held in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Axelrodia riesei Géry, 1966.

The genus Axelrodia was erected by Géry to receive this and related diminutive characins of South America and belongs within the family Characidae. The genus name honours Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, the prominent American ichthyologist and aquarium publisher who collected extensively in South America and whose material informed much of the descriptive work of the mid-twentieth century. The specific epithet riesei commemorates William Riese, who collected alongside Axelrod in the field.

Morphology

Axelrodia riesei is a very small, slender-bodied characin. FishBase records a maximum of 1 in standard length; Seriously Fish gives a slightly smaller figure of 0.5–1 in standard length in aquarium specimens, making this one of the smallest characids in regular cultivation. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a relatively large eye that is typical of the genus.

The species' common name captures its most striking feature: in nature, and in aquaria that closely replicate blackwater conditions, the body suffuses a rich, jewel-like ruby red — a colouration driven by the dark, tannin-stained water and low lighting of its natural habitat. Under bright light or in harder, more neutral water the red fades rapidly, leaving a nearly transparent or pale pinkish fish. Males are typically smaller and more intensely coloured; females are noticeably rounder in the abdomen when gravid. There is no adipose fin reduction unusual enough to diagnose the species at a glance, so the combination of small size, transparent-to-red colouration, and Orinoco-basin provenance is the most useful identification pointer.

Habitat

The ruby tetra inhabits blackwater streams and small tributaries of the upper Río Meta basin in the Colombian Llanos, east of the Andean foothills near Villavicencio. The Meta is a major left-bank tributary of the Orinoco, and the species occupies its headwater drainage. Seriously Fish considers it likely restricted to smaller forest streams and marginal vegetation rather than open main channels.

These are classic Amazonian-style blackwaters: water stained dark brown by decaying leaf litter and woody material, very soft (18–90 ppm hardness is reported across the species' range), acidic (pH 4.0–6.5 in the wild), and warm (68–82 °F). FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic and tropical, consistent with a mid-water to lower-water existence in slow or still reaches among submerged roots and fine-leaved vegetation. The heavily tannin-coloured water is the proximate cause of the red colouration — without it, the ruby tetra's pigment simply does not show.

Feeding

Axelrodia riesei is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton — the sort of small prey appropriate to a fish of 1 in. In captivity it accepts small dried foods as well as appropriately sized live and frozen offerings: baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), Daphnia, micro-worms, and grindal worms are all taken. Seriously Fish notes that the species will accept small dried foods, but live and frozen items are important for condition and colour.

Because of the fish's very small mouth, food particle size matters considerably. Oversize particles are ignored or spat out. Feeding little and often with a variety of appropriately sized live, frozen, and quality dried foods keeps the fish in good health and reproductive condition. Colour intensification under natural-seeming conditions is at least partly diet-driven, and specimens on a varied diet in blackwater conditions show markedly better red colouration than those on flake alone in hard, bright-lit tanks.

Mating

Axelrodia riesei is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Seriously Fish reports that successful reproduction has been achieved in mature, well-conditioned aquaria. The species behaves gregariously but not as a tightly structured school; individuals form small territories within the group and the behaviour is characterised as shoaling rather than rigid schooling.

Males are smaller and more intensely coloured than females, and a gravid female is noticeably rounder in the abdomen. Courtship behaviour in the aquarium is subtle for a fish of this size: males display their colouration in the presence of rivals and receptive females, and spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants such as Taxiphyllum species or spawning mops placed in the tank. The species' small territory-holding tendency suggests that a spacious, well-planted aquarium with multiple hiding areas reduces inter-fish stress and improves spawning success.

Breeding

Breeding Axelrodia riesei requires close attention to water chemistry. Soft, acidic water is essential — pH in the range 4.0–6.5 and very low hardness mirror the blackwater conditions of the type locality. A mature, biologically stable aquarium is important; the species is sensitive to water-quality instability, and only well-cycled tanks are appropriate for breeding attempts.

Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or deposited on synthetic spawning mops; they are small and adhesive, as typical of the group. The adults do not guard eggs or fry and will consume them if not separated. Breeders remove eggs or spawning medium to a separate container and raise the fry on infusoria and rotifers initially, graduating to Artemia nauplii as the fry grow. Given the fish's diminutive adult size, fry are extremely small at hatching and require the finest first foods. Water temperature for incubation and rearing should remain in the range appropriate for the species, broadly 72–79 °F.

In the aquarium

The ruby tetra is recommended for experienced aquarists who can commit to maintaining genuine blackwater conditions. A dark substrate, driftwood, and dried leaf litter (beech, Indian almond, oak) help create the tannin chemistry and subdued lighting the species needs to display its colour; in bright, hard, alkaline water the fish simply fades to an unremarkable transparent sliver and stress increases. Filtration should provide gentle flow — Axelrodia riesei comes from slow or still waters and does not tolerate strong currents. A small, mature tank of 10–15 US gal or more is appropriate for a group.

The species is peaceful and best kept in a shoal of eight or more individuals, which encourages natural behaviour and bolder display. Tank companions must be chosen with care: anything large enough to eat a 1 in fish is inappropriate, and boisterous or nippy species will stress the ruby tetra into hiding. Small rasboras, tiny ember tetras, dwarf pencilfish, and small otocinclus are workable companions in a similarly themed blackwater setup. Water temperature 68–82 °F, pH 4.0–6.5, very soft. Captive-bred stock is rarely available; most specimens are wild-caught, so a period of careful acclimatisation to the aquarium is advisable on arrival.

Conservation

Axelrodia riesei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published on 4 March 2021. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across the upper Meta basin and the lack of identified population-level threats sufficient to qualify it for a threatened category at the time of assessment.

Nonetheless, the ruby tetra's dependence on intact blackwater stream habitat means it is intrinsically sensitive to land-use change in the Colombian Llanos — an agriculturally active region subject to ongoing deforestation, drainage, and conversion of riparian areas. The loss of forest cover along stream margins changes the hydrology, chemistry, and shading that create the blackwater conditions the species requires. Wild-caught specimens still supply much of the hobby trade; supporting captive-breeding initiatives where they exist reduces collection pressure and provides more robust, acclimated stock.
