Taxonomy & naming
Carlana eigenmanni was originally described by Seth Eugene Meek in 1912 as Cheirodon eigenmanni, with the type locality given as La Junta, Costa Rica. The species has since been placed in the monotypic genus Carlana, which is currently situated within Characidae. Phylogenetic studies of characin relationships, including work by Mirande and colleagues in the 2020s, have examined Carlana's placement and its sister-group affinities within the subfamily Rhoadsiinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Carlana eigenmanni (Meek, 1912), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from the original genus Cheirodon.
The specific epithet honours Carl H. Eigenmann (1863–1927), the pioneering American ichthyologist who devoted his career to the freshwater fishes of South and Central America and whose collections and monographs remain foundational references for Neotropical fish taxonomy. The genus name Carlana is itself a derivative of his first name.
Morphology
Carlana eigenmanni is a small, markedly elongated characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. The body is cylindrical to slightly compressed, torpedo-shaped, with a pointed snout and terminal mouth — the general pike-like form that suits a fast-strike ambush predator. Fin placement is typical of the Characidae: a single dorsal fin set at mid-body, an adipose fin between dorsal and caudal, and a forked tail fin.
Colouration in life is subdued but neatly patterned: a silvery to translucent body with a prominent dark lateral stripe running from the snout tip through the eye to the caudal peduncle, often intensifying near the tail. The flanks may carry a faint iridescent sheen under raking light. Sexual dimorphism is not strongly marked at rest, though females become noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
In the wild, Carlana eigenmanni occupies freshwater river backwaters and stagnant or sluggish biotopes at elevations of roughly 115–279 ft across Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. A record from Río San José near Horquetas, Costa Rica, documents the species in a shallow backwater pool in clear water, associated with other characids including Eretmobrycon scleroparius. This preference for marginal, vegetated, slow-to-still water is consistent across the known range.
Water temperatures at occupied sites appear warm — FishBase records approximately 86 °F — which is consistent with the lowland to pre-montane elevational band the species inhabits. Substrates in backwater biotopes typically include leaf litter, fine sediment, and emergent or overhanging riparian vegetation providing shade and structural cover that the fish exploits as an ambush station.
Feeding
FishBase records the diet of Carlana eigenmanni as filamentous algae and aquatic insects, reflecting an opportunistic omnivore capable of exploiting both plant material and invertebrate prey. The elongated body and terminal mouth are more consistent with an insectivore or micropredator, and it is likely that the algae component is incidental or taken when invertebrate prey is scarce.
In the aquarium, similar small, slender characids with pike-like builds are typically fed live or frozen invertebrates — small worms, Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and mosquito larvae — together with fine granular or micro-pellet prepared foods once acclimated. The species' relatively small maximum size (under 2.5 in SL) means it does not require large prey items.
Mating
No detailed courtship observations have been published for Carlana eigenmanni in the wild. Based on its phylogenetic position within Characidae and the general biology of small characids with similar morphology, spawning is expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of the family: males court females with lateral displays and paired or group chases, driving receptive females into fine-leaved vegetation or near submerged plant matter.
As with most egg-scattering characids, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are likely deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over gravel and leaf litter in shallow, sheltered areas — habitats well represented in the backwater and vegetated-margin biotopes the species occupies. No parental care is expected, consistent with the rest of the family.
Breeding
Carlana eigenmanni has not been commonly bred in captivity, and no dedicated breeding account is available in the published or hobbyist literature. By analogy with other small characids of the Rhoadsiinae and allied groups, eggs are likely adhesive and scattered among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in shallow water. Incubation duration and fry size would depend on water temperature; at the warm temperatures (around 82–86 °F) associated with the species' natural range, hatching would be expected within 24–48 hours for most small characids.
Spawning in captivity would likely benefit from warm, slightly soft to moderately hard water with abundant fine-leaved plant cover or synthetic spawning mops, dim lighting, and conditioning on live or frozen invertebrate foods. Adults of egg-scattering characids consume their own eggs, so removal of adults or transfer of eggs after spawning is advisable. The fry of small characids typically require infusoria or similar micro-foods for the first days before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Carlana eigenmanni is rarely encountered in the hobby, and when it appears it is typically collected as a bycatch or biotope-oriented import from Central American shipments. Its modest size (under 2.5 in), clear-water backwater habitat, and association with other small characids make it an interesting subject for a Central American biotope aquarium, alongside species such as Eretmobrycon and other small characids from the same drainage systems.
A tank with warm water (around 81–86 °F), moderate to low flow mimicking its backwater habitat, and abundant plant cover or floating vegetation suits the species well. Given its elongated, predatory build it should be housed with similarly sized or larger tankmates; very small fish may be at risk. Feeding on live or frozen invertebrates is recommended to maintain condition, and acclimation to prepared foods should be done gradually. Water quality should be kept high, as the clear-water biotopes it inhabits in nature have low organic loads.
Conservation
Carlana eigenmanni is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed in 2019. The Vulnerable listing reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with continuing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat. The species occurs across Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama — a range that spans several drainages but is not large in absolute terms — and is subject to the widespread pressures affecting Central American lowland and foothill river systems: agricultural land-use change, deforestation of riparian corridors, water extraction, and pollution.
There are no species-specific conservation programmes documented for Carlana eigenmanni. Its status should be read in the context of broader freshwater biodiversity declines in Central America, where many narrowly distributed characids and other small fishes face habitat loss without attracting dedicated management attention. Keeping and breeding the species in captivity, and sourcing tank-raised individuals where available, reduces pressure on wild populations.
