Coptobrycon bilineatus is a small characid from the upper rio Tietê basin in São Paulo, Brazil, and the sole member of its genus. Reaching roughly 1.5 in in total length, it is an unassuming fish distinguished by a pair of dark lateral stripes and, of particular interest to comparative anatomists, the near-complete absence of an adipose fin — the small fleshy fin between the dorsal and caudal that is otherwise near-universal in characids. First described in 1911 from the highlands east of São Paulo city, it inhabits clear, slow-moving streams draining the Atlantic Forest, and is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN as of 2022.

Taxonomy & naming

Coptobrycon bilineatus was originally described by Max Ellis in 1911 from Alto da Serra, a locality near the present-day Paranapiacaba District in Santo André municipality, São Paulo state, Brazil — a stream draining into the upper rio Tietê. The species is the sole member of the genus Coptobrycon, making it a monotypic genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Coptobrycon bilineatus (Ellis, 1911), with the parenthetical authority reflecting its placement in a different genus at the time of description.

The genus was later the subject of a comprehensive redescription and phylogenetic analysis (Otero et al.), which confirmed its placement and clarified its relationships within Characidae. The work placed Coptobrycon within a broader characid context, drawing on material from the type region in the upper Tietê basin and examining the suite of characters — including the reduced adipose fin and dentition pattern — that distinguish it. The monotypic status of the genus means that bilineatus has no congeners to compare, and its precise sister-group relationships within Characidae remain an active area of study.

Morphology

Coptobrycon bilineatus is a slender, small characid reaching approximately 1.5 in total length (FishBase) to around 2.5 in standard length under some accounts. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical characid fashion, with a small mouth and the moderate eye characteristic of stream-dwelling insectivores.

The most immediately striking morphological feature of the genus is the reduction or near-absence of the adipose fin, the small fleshy rayless fin that sits between the dorsal and caudal fins in the vast majority of characids. In Coptobrycon this structure is vestigial or absent — a departure from the family plan so notable that it is reflected in the genus name itself. The common name 'two-lined' and the specific epithet bilineatus both refer to the pair of dark longitudinal stripes running along the flanks, a pattern typical of small stream tetras and useful for initial identification. Dentition of the posterior mandibular teeth is also modified, another character captured in the etymology.

Habitat

The species is known from the upper rio Tietê basin in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with the type locality at Alto da Serra in the Serra do Mar coastal escarpment region east of São Paulo city. This is Atlantic Forest highland terrain, where streams run clear and cool over rocky and sandy substrates before descending toward the lowland Tietê drainage.

The habitat is characterised by slow-moving to gently flowing clear water in small streams and minor tributaries. The Serra do Mar streams at these elevations are typically clean, well-oxygenated, and relatively cool by tropical standards, draining forest that moderates temperatures and maintains high water quality. Loss of Atlantic Forest cover across this region has reduced and fragmented available habitat for specialists such as Coptobrycon bilineatus.

Feeding

Coptobrycon bilineatus is carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates in the wild. The diet likely comprises aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and terrestrial invertebrates fallen onto the water surface — the typical resource base for a small, insectivorous stream characid in Atlantic Forest drainages.

In captivity the species can be expected to accept a variety of small live and frozen foods including Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, bloodworm, and similar invertebrate fare. Its small adult size means that food items must be appropriately sized. As with most small carnivorous tetras, a diet that includes live or frozen invertebrate foods is preferable to one relying solely on dry foods.

Mating

Coptobrycon bilineatus is a characid and follows the egg-scattering reproductive pattern general to the family: spawning occurs with no pair bond, no nest construction, and no parental care, with eggs scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited over suitable substrate. Males likely chase and court females in the manner of small stream tetras, with brief, rapid spawning acts releasing small numbers of eggs at a time.

Detailed field observations of spawning behaviour in wild Coptobrycon bilineatus are not available in the published literature reviewed for this account. The biology of the species in this regard can be inferred from its family membership and body plan, and from what is known of similar small Atlantic Forest characids.

Breeding

Specific breeding accounts for Coptobrycon bilineatus in captivity are sparse. The fry are small at hatching, consistent with the adults' modest size, and would require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Captive breeding data specific to this species remain limited in the hobbyist literature.

In the aquarium

Coptobrycon bilineatus is a rare species in the ornamental trade and is seldom encountered outside specialist circles with an interest in endemic Atlantic Forest fishes. Its small adult size — around 1.5 in — makes it suitable for a modest aquarium, and a species tank or biotope setup reflecting its Serra do Mar stream origins would be ideal: clear, well-filtered water with a moderate current, a dark sandy substrate, leaf litter, and fine-leaved plants.

Water chemistry should lean toward the soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions of Atlantic Forest highland streams, with temperatures kept in the cooler tropical range consistent with upland São Paulo habitats. As a small carnivore it requires suitably sized invertebrate live or frozen foods for best condition. Given its rarity and restricted natural range, any captive individuals should be treated as specimens of conservation interest. Little published aquarium husbandry information is available specific to this species; keepers would benefit from documenting their observations and contributing to the collective knowledge of this seldom-kept fish.

Conservation

Coptobrycon bilineatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 18 May 2022 according to FishBase. The LC designation reflects a species not currently considered at elevated risk, but it does not imply that the fish faces no pressures. The upper rio Tietê basin in greater metropolitan São Paulo is one of the most heavily urbanised river systems in South America, and Atlantic Forest highland streams in the Serra do Mar have been significantly affected by deforestation, water extraction, urbanisation, and pollution over the past century.

As a monotypic genus confined to a single river basin in one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened biomes, Coptobrycon bilineatus represents an irreplaceable evolutionary lineage. The Least Concern assessment should be understood in the context of limited distributional data rather than certainty about population stability. Continued monitoring of water quality and habitat condition in the upper Tietê basin, and targeted surveys to confirm the current distribution of the species, would support a more informed future assessment.
