Dectobrycon armeniacus is a small, softly coloured Amazonian tetra known in the aquarium hobby as the Apricot Tetra for the warm yellow-orange wash that distinguishes it from the many silver and red-finned characins that share its trade lanes. It is the sole species in its genus, distinguished from all other characids by a precise combination of dental features and lateral-line scale counts, and was formally described only in 2006 despite having circulated in the ornamental-fish trade from Peru for some years before its scientific recognition.

Taxonomy & naming

Dectobrycon armeniacus was described by Axel Zarske and Jacques Géry in 2006 in a German-language paper treating new characid genera and species from Peru and Brazil. The type locality is in Peru, and the species represents the entire monospecific genus Dectobrycon — no other species has been assigned to it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Dectobrycon armeniacus Zarske & Géry, 2006, placed within Characidae.

The genus name Dectobrycon is a compound construction combining Greek roots to describe a small, biting or tooth-bearing characin. The species epithet armeniacus is Latin for 'apricot-coloured' or 'dull orange', directly referencing the aquarium trade common name 'Apricot Tetra' and the fish's characteristic yellow-orange coloration. As a monospecific genus, Dectobrycon sits among the incertae sedis characids — those whose placement within the broad family Characidae remains to be fully resolved by phylogenetic work. The 2006 formal description clarified the key diagnostic characters: a specific arrangement of premaxillary teeth in the inner row (5–6 teeth) and a combination of tricuspid and conical teeth on the maxilla (6–11 total), together with an interrupted lateral line, that separate it from superficially similar small tetras.

Morphology

Dectobrycon armeniacus is a small tetra with the slender, laterally compressed body typical of open-water characins. It is imported and sold as a small aquarium fish, placing it in the category of pocket-sized tetras rather than the mid-sized species like neons or black phantoms.

The species is immediately recognisable by its overall yellow-orange body tint — the source of its common name — which sets it apart from the predominantly silver or strongly patterned tetras that dominate the trade. Dentition is the genus's defining hard character: the premaxillary inner row carries 5–6 teeth, while the maxilla bears 6–11 teeth that are a mixture of tricuspid and conical forms. The lateral line is interrupted, another diagnostic feature noted in the original description. Fin colouration echoes the body's warm tones. Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been described in detail in the literature.

Habitat

Dectobrycon armeniacus originates from Peru and enters the aquarium trade through Peruvian export channels, indicating a home range within the Amazon basin's western and central reaches. Beyond this broad attribution, precise collection localities and habitat descriptions have not been widely published — the species was a trade fish before it was a described one, and detailed field notes from its native waters are sparse in the accessible literature.

By analogy with ecologically similar small Amazonian tetras from the same region and trade, D. armeniacus likely inhabits calm or slow-moving blackwater or clearwater streams and flooded forest margins where small invertebrates are abundant and overhead cover is provided by riparian vegetation. Such habitats across the Peruvian Amazon are characteristically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, though specific water-chemistry data for collection sites of this species are not confirmed in available sources.

Feeding

Dectobrycon armeniacus is a small pelagic schooling tetra and, like the majority of similarly sized Amazonian characins, is presumed to feed opportunistically on tiny aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, zooplankton, and small insects in the wild. In the aquarium it accepts the standard tetra diet readily: good-quality micro-pellets and fine flake food form the staple, supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as micro-worms, newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, and Cyclops. Offering varied food improves colour expression and general condition, which is particularly relevant for a species whose appeal rests partly on its warm body tint.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Dectobrycon armeniacus are available in the accessible literature. By analogy with other small Amazonian tetras of similar body form and ecology, the species is expected to follow the standard characid reproductive pattern: egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged vegetation, and spawning triggered by water-quality cues such as slightly cooler or softer water.

Males of small tetras typically display increased activity and mild chasing of females in the run-up to spawning, though the specific signals and behaviours of D. armeniacus in this context remain undescribed in the literature available to date.

Breeding

Dectobrycon armeniacus has not been the subject of published captive-breeding accounts in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. The species appears in trade as imported Peruvian stock, and whether it has been bred in captivity on any scale is not documented in available sources.

Aquarists wishing to attempt breeding would logically apply the approach proven for comparable small Amazonian tetras: condition a group on live and varied frozen foods, use a small, dimly lit breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, and provide soft, slightly acidic water at the warm end of the species' comfort range. Eggs should be considered vulnerable to parental predation; removing adults after spawning or harvesting the spawning medium is standard practice. Incubation times and fry size would be expected to resemble those of similar-sized characins, but specific data for this species are absent from available literature, and caution against fabrication requires noting this gap.

In the aquarium

The Apricot Tetra is described in hobby sources as a peaceful, sociable fish suited to a community aquarium. Its small size and gentle temperament make it compatible with other diminutive, non-aggressive species — other small tetras, rasboras, small corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids all make appropriate companions. Like most schooling characins it is best kept in a group of six or more, which reduces individual stress and produces the most natural behaviour.

A planted aquarium with areas of open swimming, subdued lighting, and dark substrate will show the species' warm coloration to best advantage and most closely mirror the shaded Amazonian environments from which it originates. Water conditions based on soft, slightly acidic to neutral tropical parameters are appropriate given its Peruvian provenance, though specific tolerance ranges have not been formally published. The species is imported and sold through the specialist ornamental-fish trade; availability may be intermittent compared with staple tetras.

Conservation

Dectobrycon armeniacus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. This is common for small, recently described Amazonian tetras that enter the ornamental-fish trade: the taxonomic and distributional groundwork needed for a formal conservation assessment is often lacking for species described from trade specimens with limited field data.

The absence of an IUCN assessment should not be taken as evidence that the species faces no pressures. The Peruvian Amazon, from which it is exported, is subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and habitat degradation. Ornamental-fish collection from that region is a significant industry, and wild-capture pressure on small, poorly documented species is difficult to quantify without baseline population data. Until the species' natural range and abundance are better characterised, its conservation status remains genuinely unknown rather than demonstrably secure.
