Derhamia hoffmannorum was described by Jacques Géry and Aleksander Zarski in 2002 in their paper 'Derhamia hoffmannorum gen. et sp. n. — a new pencil fish (Teleostei, Characiformes, Lebiasinidae), endemic from the Mazaruni River in Guyana,' published in Zoologische Abhandlungen Staatliches Museum für Tierkunde Dresden (vol. 52, pp. 35–47). The Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) records Géry & Zarski, 2002 as the valid authority.
The genus Derhamia is monospecific — D. hoffmannorum is its only member — and was erected specifically to accommodate this fish, which Géry and Zarski found sufficiently distinct from existing pencilfish genera (Nannostomus, Copella, Pyrrhulina, and allies) to warrant a new generic name. FishBase places the genus in the order Characiformes, family Lebiasinidae, subfamily Lebiasininae, confirming its position among the pencil fishes of South America.
The specific epithet hoffmannorum is a Latin genitive plural, honouring the Hoffmann family whose support facilitated the research. The common name Mazaruni Pencilfish reflects the sole known native river and the broader pencilfish group to which it belongs.
Morphology
Derhamia hoffmannorum reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The body is elongated and slender in the pencilfish manner, with a notably superior (upturned) mouth adapted to feeding at the water surface. The eyes are large relative to head size, and the dorsal profile is relatively straight compared to the ventral — both traits consistent with a surface-oriented lifestyle.
The colour pattern features a prominent dark lateral band running from behind the head to the base of the caudal fin, surmounted by a pale, often silvery or whitish, longitudinal stripe. This two-tone flank pattern is shared broadly across the pencilfish radiation but is crisp and well-defined in this species. Fin formula as recorded by FishBase: 2 dorsal spines, 8 dorsal soft rays, and 9–10 anal soft rays. Detailed meristic data on other counts are available only from the original description, which was not directly accessed for this article.
Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in available sources; the fish's shy, surface-dwelling demeanour likely makes wild-caught adults difficult to sex without examination.
Habitat
Derhamia hoffmannorum is known exclusively from the Mazaruni River in Guyana, a major tributary of the Essequibo River draining the Guiana Shield. FishBase classifies it as a tropical, freshwater, pelagic species, consistent with a fish that inhabits the upper water column and surface of river channels and associated waters.
The Mazaruni flows through ancient Precambrian terrain of the Guiana Highlands, and its waters are characteristically softened by granite and sandstone catchments — typically acidic to near-neutral, low in dissolved salts, and dark or tea-coloured from tannins and humic acids in many reaches. The species is described as shy and surface-dwelling, suggesting it occupies calm or moderately flowing surface water near cover such as overhanging vegetation, floating plant matter, or marginal structure where it can retreat quickly.
The extreme endemism — a single river basin — is the defining ecological fact. No populations have been recorded outside the Mazaruni system, making the species acutely vulnerable to any localised disturbance.
Feeding
The superior mouth of Derhamia hoffmannorum is a clear functional indicator: this is a surface feeder. In the wild it almost certainly takes small insects and invertebrates from the water surface, including fallen terrestrial insects, emerging aquatic insects, and other items in the surface film — the classic feeding niche of surface-oriented pencilfish and halfbeaks.
FishBase notes that in captivity it accepts all foods offered at the surface only and will not descend to feed from the mid-column or substrate. This is an important husbandry detail: sinking pellets or foods dropped to the bottom will be ignored. Floating dried foods, surface-drifted live or frozen items such as fruit flies (Drosophila) and small invertebrates, and floating microworm or brine shrimp nauplii at the surface are all suitable. Feeding at the surface also keeps the fish calm and encourages the natural posture near the waterline that makes it most comfortable.
Mating
No detailed courtship or mating behaviour has been formally described in the published literature for Derhamia hoffmannorum, and direct captive observations remain sparse. As a member of the subfamily Lebiasininae within the Lebiasinidae, the species likely follows the general pencilfish pattern of egg-scattering spawning associated with fine-leaved vegetation or plant debris near the water surface, though specific accounts are lacking.
FishBase records no observed parental care or direct courtship in captivity. The superior mouth and pelagic, surface-oriented habits suggest that spawning, if it occurs near the surface, may involve adhesive eggs deposited among floating plant material or on leaves overhanging the water. In the absence of documented observations, the mating system cannot be stated with confidence beyond these reasonable inferences from its family placement and morphology.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Derhamia hoffmannorum has not been documented in readily available sources, and the species is rarely seen in the hobby. Given its Lebiasinid affinity, the expected reproductive mode would be adhesive egg-scattering among fine-leaved plants or floating vegetation, with no parental care — broadly the pattern seen across related pencilfish genera.
If breeding is attempted, the surface-feeding biology of the fish should guide setup: a well-covered aquarium (to prevent jumping) with floating plants or fine-leaved surface vegetation, soft and slightly acidic water in keeping with Guiana Shield conditions, and surface-delivered conditioning foods to bring the fish into breeding condition would be the logical starting point. The rarity of the species in captivity and the lack of published breeding accounts mean that any successful reproduction would itself be a worthwhile contribution to knowledge of the genus.
In the aquarium
Derhamia hoffmannorum is a shy, specialist surface fish that demands a calm environment and targeted surface feeding. FishBase characterises it as surface-dwelling and notes it will only accept food at the waterline — aquarists who expect it to compete for sinking food with mid-water or bottom-dwelling tankmates will find it goes unfed. A species-only setup or a tank with other surface-oriented, non-aggressive fishes of similar temperament is preferable.
Water chemistry should approximate the soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions of the Guiana Shield rivers: low conductivity, pH in the range of roughly 5.5–7.0, and warm temperatures consistent with its tropical freshwater classification. A well-planted tank with floating or emergent vegetation to provide surface cover, low flow, and a secure lid (pencilfish are agile jumpers) suits the species well. Because it is rarely available in the trade, fish encountered are most likely wild-caught, and acclimatisation should be careful. Its Vulnerable IUCN status underscores the conservation value of any captive stock that does become established.
Conservation
Derhamia hoffmannorum is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment date of 31 December 2020, under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v). These criteria reflect both a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, combined with documented continuing decline in habitat quality and population size.
The primary identified threat is gold mining in the Mazaruni River basin. Alluvial and dredge mining introduces mercury — used in amalgamation — into the river system and generates heavy silt loads that alter water chemistry, degrade aquatic habitat, and directly harm fish populations. The Mazaruni has been one of Guyana's most intensively mined rivers, and mercury contamination is a well-documented regional problem. For a species endemic to a single river system, such localised habitat degradation carries outsized extinction risk: there is no other population to act as a source if the Mazaruni population declines.
No specific conservation or captive breeding programme for D. hoffmannorum is known to be active. Its obscurity in the aquarium hobby, while limiting demand-driven wild collection, also means it lacks the profile that drives hobbyist-led conservation efforts. Formal protection of key reaches of the Mazaruni from mining activity would be the most direct conservation benefit available to the species.
