Taxonomy & naming
Diapoma itaimbe was described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba and Stanley Howard Weitzman in 2003 in a paper published in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia PUCRS, Série Zoologia (volume 16, number 1, pages 67–151) in which the genus Diapoma was established with six new species, all from the La Plata River basin of southern Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. The type locality is in the Iguaçu River system of Brazil. Because the species was described outside the nominative genus to which it now belongs — it was placed into the new genus Diapoma at original description — the authority is parenthetical: (Malabarba & Weitzman, 2003).
FishBase records the species under the synonym Cyanocharax itaimbe, reflecting a period of nomenclatural flux in the group; Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name. Diapoma belongs to subfamily Stevardiinae within Characidae — a placement supported by phylogenetic analyses of southern South American characids including work drawing on Iguaçu basin material. The genus name is derived from Greek: dia (through, across) and poma (cover or lid), a reference to internal morphology of the gill apparatus. No English common name is established for this species.
Morphology
Diapoma itaimbe is a small, slender characid reaching approximately 2 in standard length in males and unsexed specimens, based on FishBase records. Like other members of the genus it has the typical tetra body plan: laterally compressed, with a moderately deep profile, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of most Characiformes.
Detailed external descriptions of D. itaimbe in publicly accessible sources are limited. As is typical for small stevardiines, the species is likely silvery with any species-specific patterning confined to subtle fin colouration and body markings. The relatively small adult size places it firmly in the micro-tetra class, comparable in stature to small species of Hyphessobrycon or Hemigrammus, though not closely related to those genera.
Habitat
Diapoma itaimbe is distributed in southern Brazil, within the La Plata River drainage, with the type locality in the Iguaçu River system. The Iguaçu is a major tributary of the Paraná River and is notable for its high degree of endemism — the waterfalls of Iguaçu historically isolated its upper drainage, producing a distinctive fish fauna.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic in freshwater, subtropical environments. The La Plata basin at these latitudes experiences a subtropical climate with marked seasonal temperature variation, cooler winters and warm summers, and rivers characterised by moderate to high flow over rock and gravel substrates in upland reaches. Published water-parameter data specific to D. itaimbe collection localities are not available in the sources consulted, but the Iguaçu system generally has soft to moderately hard, circumneutral water in upland sections.
Feeding
No published dietary study specific to Diapoma itaimbe has been located. By analogy with small stevardiine characids of similar size and habit from the La Plata basin, the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans — together with algae and organic detritus in proportion to their availability.
In an aquarium setting, a small species in this group would be expected to accept commercially prepared micro-pellets and fine flake foods, along with small live and frozen foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, and Cyclops. Feeding multiple small portions rather than a single large meal better replicates the continuous foraging behaviour typical of riverine characids.
Mating
No observational or experimental record of courtship behaviour in Diapoma itaimbe has been published in accessible sources. The broader stevardiine clade includes both egg-scattering species and those with more specialised internal insemination; whether Diapoma employs the latter is not confirmed from the sources consulted.
For closely related small La Plata basin characids that do scatter eggs, spawning typically occurs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over gravel substrates, with no parental care following egg deposition. Adhesive eggs are deposited in small numbers during spawning activity, and the pair separate without guarding the clutch. Until specific observations of D. itaimbe mating behaviour are published, these generalisations should be treated with caution.
Breeding
Captive breeding records for Diapoma itaimbe are absent from the hobby and scientific literature reviewed. The species is not established in the ornamental trade as of the time of writing, so accumulated husbandry experience is minimal.
By analogy with small egg-scattering characids from the same basin, breeding in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at subtropical temperatures (around 68–75 °F) would be a reasonable starting point for any experimental attempt. Fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops would serve as egg-deposition sites, and adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry of small characids in this size class typically require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Diapoma itaimbe is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available in the ornamental trade. Published husbandry notes do not exist. The information below is necessarily inferred from its taxonomy, known size, and geography rather than from direct hobbyist experience.
A small, subtropical stream characid of roughly 2 in would generally be suited to an aquarium of modest size — a tank of 23.5 in or more — with soft to moderately hard, neutral water and a temperature range that accommodates the seasonal variation of the subtropical La Plata basin, roughly 64–79 °F. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and gentle to moderate flow would replicate the riverine conditions of the Iguaçu system. As with most small characids, a shoal of six or more individuals is preferable to small numbers, as the species would be expected to show more natural behaviour and reduced stress in a group. Any keeper fortunate enough to obtain specimens would do well to document their observations carefully, as basic husbandry data for this species remain entirely absent from the literature.
Conservation
Diapoma itaimbe has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal population survey or conservation assessment has been published for this species.
The Iguaçu River system, where the type locality is located, is subject to ongoing pressure from hydroelectric development, agricultural runoff, and habitat modification in the watershed. The Iguaçu's highly endemic fish fauna — a consequence of its historical isolation above the Iguaçu Falls — means that species restricted to particular reaches may be disproportionately affected by localised disturbance. Until a targeted assessment of D. itaimbe is conducted, its conservation status remains formally unknown. The absence of an IUCN evaluation should not be taken as evidence of security.
