Taxonomy & naming
Ectrepopterus uruguayensis was originally described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1943. The genus Ectrepopterus had for a long period been treated as a junior synonym of Hyphessobrycon, and for much of the twentieth century the species was accordingly placed in that large and heterogeneous assemblage. A revalidation of Ectrepopterus published in 2012 restored the genus to valid status, returning this fish to the original combination and separating it from the sprawling Hyphessobrycon complex.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name. The parenthetical authority — (Fowler, 1943) — reflects the fact that Fowler placed the species in a different genus from the one now accepted. The species was recorded as new to Argentina through a biogeographic checklist (Pensoft, 2018), adding Argentina to a distribution previously documented primarily from Uruguay, and confirming its occurrence across lower-tributary systems of the Río de la Plata and lower Río Uruguay.
Morphology
Ectrepopterus uruguayensis is a small, slender characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2 in. The body is silvery to silvery-gold in overall tone, with the translucency typical of small South American stream tetras. The lateral line is incomplete, a feature noted in the species account, distinguishing it from some congeners and relatives.
Morphological detail in the literature is sparse, which is unsurprising given how long the species was subsumed into larger generic synonymies. A voucher specimen (UFRGS 8578, 1.5 in SL, male) is documented in research collections, confirming small adult size well below the 2 in maximum. Detailed meristic and osteological data are available in the scientific literature but are not reproduced here.
Habitat
The species occupies freshwater streams and shallow semi-lentic and lotic zones in the lower Río Uruguay basin and lower Río de la Plata drainage of southern South America, with confirmed records from Uruguay and Argentina. Recorded habitats include shallow areas reaching up to roughly 4 ft depth, with moderate submerged and riparian vegetation.
Water clarity varies with season and rainfall, from transparent to turbid, and bottom composition is variable. The fish has been documented as part of fish-community biodiversity studies showing seasonal richness variation (summer and winter sampling), indicating it is a permanent resident rather than a seasonal visitor to these systems. Conditions in the lower Plata basin are temperate to subtropical, with water temperatures reflecting seasonal cycles characteristic of the region.
Feeding
Dietary and stomach content data for Ectrepopterus uruguayensis are documented in the literature; a stomach-content analysis is referenced in published research (ResearchGate, figure data associated with Río de la Plata fish communities). The species is a small-bodied characid and, in keeping with that guild, is expected to feed on small invertebrates, micro-crustaceans, and organic detritus available in shallow stream and backwater habitats.
Detailed dietary composition from primary sources is not reproduced here. In the aquarium, small-bodied characids of this type typically accept fine-grade prepared foods, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as newly hatched brine shrimp, micro-worms, and Daphnia.
Mating
No published account of courtship behaviour in Ectrepopterus uruguayensis is available in the sources reviewed. As a member of the Characidae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner following the general characid pattern: males court females without establishing pair bonds, spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, eggs are adhesive and scattered among plants, and no parental care is provided.
Seasonal variation in the species' habitat (documented in community biodiversity surveys) may correlate with reproductive cycles tied to water temperature or flood pulse, as is common among subtropical South American characids, but direct observations are not available in the current literature.
Breeding
No captive-breeding account for Ectrepopterus uruguayensis has been published or is recorded in the hobby literature reviewed. Based on the general biology of small characids from temperate South American drainages, breeding would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern common to the family: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or substrate, no parental care, and adults that will consume their own eggs if not separated.
For aquarists who obtain specimens, conditioning on live and frozen foods, slightly cooler water mimicking the temperate Río de la Plata climate, and the provision of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops would represent a reasonable starting approach. Fry, if produced, would likely require very fine first foods given the small adult size. Captive-breeding data for this species would be a genuine contribution to knowledge.
In the aquarium
Ectrepopterus uruguayensis is not an established aquarium fish and is effectively absent from the hobby trade. Its small size (to 2 in SL), silvery colouration, and stream-dwelling habits suggest it would be suited to a small to medium planted aquarium with gentle flow and fine-leaved vegetation, kept in a group after the fashion of other small South American tetras.
Water conditions appropriate to the lower Río de la Plata basin — temperate to subtropical temperatures, neutral to slightly alkaline chemistry reflecting the mixed riverine environment — would serve as a starting point. The fish's tolerance of turbid as well as clear water suggests reasonable adaptability. Its absence from the trade means that captive-care information is essentially non-existent; any aquarist keeping this species would be working from first principles and from analogy with related small-bodied Characidae.
Conservation
Ectrepopterus uruguayensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no formal conservation evaluation is available. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The species inhabits lowland stream systems in Uruguay and Argentina, ecosystems that face broad pressures across the Río de la Plata basin including agricultural runoff, habitat modification, and introduced species.
The 2018 documentation of the species as a new record for Argentina (Pensoft checklist) indicates that its range may be larger than previously known, which is broadly positive from a conservation standpoint. However, the absence of any IUCN assessment means population size, trend, and specific threats are unknown. Future surveys and a formal conservation evaluation would be valuable given the ongoing degradation of lowland stream habitats across temperate southern South America.
