Taxonomy & naming
Glandulocauda caerulea was formally described by Naércio Aquino Menezes and Stanley H. Weitzman in 2009 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology. Crucially, it is a replacement name: the species had been known under the name Glandulocauda melanopleura Eigenmann, 1911, but that epithet was found to be preoccupied by Hemibrycon melanopleurus Ellis, 1911, a senior homonym. Menezes and Weitzman therefore published caerulea as a valid substitute name, with no change to the authorship concepts surrounding the species itself. The type locality is Rio Iguaçu at Serrinha, state of Paraná, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records Glandulocauda caerulea Menezes & Weitzman, 2009 as the currently valid name.
The genus Glandulocauda belongs within the tribe Glandulocaudini, a clade of characids historically recognised for the males' caudal glands — pheromone-secreting organs embedded in modified fin-ray tissue. The broader systematic placement of glandulocaudins within Characidae has been revised multiple times, but the genus and its characteristic male morphology remain clearly defined.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 1–1.5 in standard length (about 1.5 in SL maximum recorded by FishBase), making Glandulocauda caerulea a small-bodied characid. The body is slender and somewhat laterally compressed, typical of stream-dwelling characids adapted to rheophilic habitats.
The most distinctive feature is the sexual dimorphism concentrated in the unpaired fins of males. Males possess glandular tissue associated with modified caudal-fin rays (rays 11–12), forming a pheromone organ believed to function in chemical communication during courtship — a defining character of the Glandulocaudini. Males also bear small hooks on the rays of the anal and pelvic fins, another widespread glandulocaudin character. Females lack both the caudal glandular structures and the fin hooks. The specific epithet caerulea (Latin: blue or sky-coloured) presumably refers to body coloration, though detailed colour descriptions are sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
Glandulocauda caerulea is endemic to the upper rio Iguaçu basin, distributed across Paraná and Santa Catarina states in southern Brazil. The type locality — Rio Iguaçu at Serrinha, Paraná — is representative of the species' habitat: fast-flowing, clear-water streams with substrates of sand, mud, and rock. This rheophilic niche places it among the benthopelagic small characids that exploit oxygen-rich, well-oxygenated current zones.
The upper Iguaçu is a geographically isolated system above a series of waterfalls that historically limited faunal exchange with the lower basin, creating the conditions for high endemism. Several fish species are found only in this upper drainage, and the entire system drains the highland plateau of southern Brazil before eventually reaching the Paraná River. The combination of a restricted natural range and habitat pressure from agricultural expansion, water abstraction, and altered flow regimes in this agriculturally intensified region defines the species' conservation situation.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies specific to Glandulocauda caerulea appear in the available literature. By analogy with other small stream-dwelling glandulocaudins and characids of comparable body size and habitat, the species is likely an opportunistic micro-predator and insectivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the stream surface.
In the aquarium, small characids of this type typically accept live and frozen microfoods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, and small frozen invertebrates — as well as finely crushed high-quality flake or micro-pellets. Given its specialised rheophilic habitat requirements, this species is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade, and detailed husbandry experience is limited.
Mating
The reproductive biology of Glandulocauda caerulea has not been documented in detail in the peer-reviewed literature available from the research cache. However, the males' caudal gland — glandular tissue on modified caudal-fin rays — is understood across the Glandulocaudini to function as a pheromone-release organ during courtship. Breeding
No captive-breeding accounts for Glandulocauda caerulea are recorded in the literature captured in the research cache, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade in a way that has generated hobbyist breeding records. Based on the glandulocaudin body plan and the general biology of small stream characids, the species is expected to scatter small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or fibrous substrate, with no parental care from either sex.
Should captive breeding be attempted, the fast-flowing, clear, cool-to-moderate highland stream conditions of the upper Iguaçu basin would need to be replicated as closely as possible — strong oxygenation, moderate current, and clean water. Fry would require very fine first foods given the small adult body size. Data on incubation period, clutch size, and growth rate are not available from current sources.
In the aquarium
Glandulocauda caerulea is not an established aquarium fish. Its small size, specialised habitat requirements, and narrow endemic range mean it has rarely if ever reached the ornamental trade, and it is not described in mainstream fishkeeping literature. Any aquarist working with wild-caught specimens would need to reproduce the rheophilic stream conditions of the upper Iguaçu: well-oxygenated, fast-flowing, clear water at the moderate temperatures of the southern Brazilian highland, a substrate of sand and smooth rock, and excellent water quality.
Given its Endangered status and restricted natural range, collection of wild specimens raises significant conservation concerns. The species is far more scientifically than horticulturally significant at present, and any work with it in captivity would most appropriately sit within a structured ex-situ conservation or research programme rather than general hobbyist keeping.
Conservation
Glandulocauda caerulea is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (2018 assessment). The species is endemic to the upper rio Iguaçu basin — a geographically isolated drainage in Paraná and Santa Catarina states, Brazil — and has no known populations outside this system. The upper Iguaçu flows through one of the most intensively farmed regions of South America; the catchment is heavily modified by agriculture, urban expansion, water abstraction, and channel alteration, all of which degrade the clear, fast-flowing stream habitats on which the species depends.
The combination of small range, specialised rheophilic habitat, and ongoing catchment-level pressure places G. caerulea in a precarious position. It does not appear to be held in captivity in numbers that would constitute a meaningful ex-situ reserve population. Conservation of the species is therefore entirely dependent on the protection and restoration of freshwater habitat in the upper Iguaçu basin, alongside broader legal frameworks protecting endemic fish of the Paraná drainage system in Brazil.
