Gymnocharacinus bergii is one of the most extraordinary and imperilled freshwater fishes of South America: a small characin confined entirely to the thermal headwaters of Valcheta Stream on the Somuncura Plateau of Patagonian Argentina, where it survives in a geothermally warmed trickle far from any other water body. Its most arresting trait is its near-nakedness — adults above 2 in shed almost all their scales, retaining only those along the lateral line and behind the operculum — earning it the common name Naked Characin. With an IUCN status of Critically Endangered and a 2018 epidemic that killed an estimated 82 percent of the global population, it ranks among the most vulnerable fishes on Earth.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnocharacinus bergii was described by Franz Steindachner in 1903 and is the sole member of the genus Gymnocharacinus, which has historically been placed in its own subfamily, Gymnocharacinae, within the family Characidae. The species is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Gymnocharacinus bergii Steindachner, 1903; some older literature uses the spelling bergi (without the terminal i), but bergii is the form accepted by current authorities.

FishBase lists the species within Acestrorhamphidae in some classifications reflecting the ongoing reorganisation of characiform families, but the broader literature continues to treat Gymnocharacinus within Characidae. It is monotypic: there are no described subspecies and no other species in the genus, making it a singleton of exceptional evolutionary distinctiveness. Its phylogenetic position within the Characiformes has attracted interest precisely because of the unusual combination of scale-loss, grinding dentition, and restricted range — features that set it apart from virtually all its relatives in the order.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 3–4 in total length, with maturity attained at as little as 1.5 in TL. The body is moderately robust for a characin. The fin formula is distinctive: 12 soft dorsal rays and 19 soft anal rays; the caudal fin is forked with rounded lobes; and, unlike the great majority of characins, the species entirely lacks an adipose fin. The mouth is terminal with a slight superior prognathism. Dentition is well developed, with two rows of teeth on both premaxillae and dentaries and two pentacuspid teeth on the maxillae; adults possess a pharyngeal grinding apparatus used to process periphytic algae, an unusual dietary specialisation within the order.

The most conspicuous morphological trait is the progressive loss of scales during ontogeny. Juveniles between 33 and 1.5 in TL begin reabsorbing their scales; by adulthood (above approximately 2 in), scales are retained only along the straight, continuous lateral line and in the area immediately posterior to the operculum. This feature — unique among South American characins — gives the species its common name and its genus name (gymnos, Greek for naked). Body colouration is dark brown to greenish on the dorsal and lateral surfaces, with a cream or pale belly and a conspicuous copper-coloured band running along the flank below the lateral line.

Habitat

Gymnocharacinus bergii is endemic to the Somuncura Plateau of northeastern Patagonia, Argentina, at elevations between 500 and 900 metres. Its entire known range is the thermal headwaters of Valcheta Stream, an endorheic system roughly 62 mi in length draining an internal basin in the Patagonian steppe. The species is documented from two thermally distinct branches — the 'Frío' (cold) and 'Caliente' (warm) headwaters — where geothermal warming maintains water temperatures of approximately 71–79 °F year-round, far above the ambient temperatures of the surrounding high-altitude plateau.

This thermal refuge is both the reason the species exists in Patagonia at all and the central constraint on its distribution: it cannot colonise the cold main-stem waters downstream, and there are no other thermal outlets in the region it could reach. The endorheic drainage means Valcheta Stream flows to no sea and connects to no other basin; the fish has no pathway to disperse. The surrounding landscape is open steppe with scrub vegetation. A provincial nature reserve of approximately 15,0 mi² was declared in 1986, and the species was declared a Natural Monument of Rio Negro Province in 1994, though effective protection has been limited in practice.

Feeding

The diet of Gymnocharacinus bergii changes markedly through ontogeny. Larvae and small juveniles feed on small invertebrates — ostracods, chironomid larvae, and mites (acari) — typical of the benthic and planktonic fauna available in the stream headwaters. As fish grow and the pharyngeal grinding apparatus develops, the diet shifts: juveniles and adults feed predominantly on periphytic algae scraped from submerged substrates, supplemented opportunistically by invertebrates when available.

This combination of a shift from carnivory to algivory, a specialised grinding dentition, and a habitat with abundant algal growth on rock and vegetation surfaces in the warm, light-exposed headwaters suggests a trophic niche with little direct competition from most other characins. In captivity the species is reportedly difficult to maintain in part because of this specialised dietary requirement; replicating the periphyton component demands careful attention to tank setup and supplemental feeding with algae-based foods and invertebrates.

Mating

Gymnocharacinus bergii is a gregarious (gregarian) species in nature, moving in loose aggregations in the thermal reaches of Valcheta Stream. The species is seasonal in its reproductive activity, with the breeding period documented from August through October — late winter to early spring in the Southern Hemisphere — when day length and temperature conditions in the headwaters shift toward their annual peak.

Males reach sexual maturity at approximately 1.5 in TL and females at approximately 1.5 in TL, values that correspond closely to the size at which scale reabsorption is largely complete. The combination of a brief, seasonally defined breeding window and an extremely small global population means that reproductive failure in any one season has outsized consequences for population recovery. No detailed field observations of courtship behaviour are published in the accessible literature, but the species' characin ancestry and egg morphology point to open-water spawning among vegetation rather than any substrate-guarding reproductive strategy.

Breeding

Spawning in Gymnocharacinus bergii takes place during the August–October window. Females produce approximately 200 oocytes per cycle; eggs are large and yolk-rich, approximately 0.5 in in diameter, consistent with development in cool, low-productivity peripheral waters even if the headwaters themselves are thermally elevated. The yolk-heavy eggs suggest larvae hatch at a relatively advanced state of development compared with many small characins.

No parental care is documented, which is typical for characins generally. In captivity the species has proven extremely challenging to breed and maintain, and there is no established hobbyist or zoo breeding programme of significant scale. The combination of specialised feeding requirements, a seasonally triggered reproductive cycle, and sensitivity to water quality and temperature deviations makes ex-situ propagation difficult. This limits the species' safety net: unlike many Critically Endangered fishes with established captive assurance colonies, Gymnocharacinus bergii remains almost entirely dependent on the continued survival of its single wild population.

In the aquarium

Gymnocharacinus bergii is not a species in general trade and is not recommended as an aquarium fish for any but the most specialised institutions undertaking genuine conservation work. The combination of extreme endemism, Critically Endangered status, and documented vulnerability to collection pressure means that any wild-caught specimens would represent a significant and unjustifiable removal from the global population. The species has no established captive-bred supply.

For institutions with conservation mandates, the challenges are considerable. The fish requires soft, thermally stable warm water in the 70–79 °F range, a substantial supply of periphytic algae or equivalent algal food, and live invertebrate supplementation. It is sensitive to pathogens — the 2018 Ichthyophthirius multifiliis outbreak that killed 82% of the wild population was associated with the introduction of an invasive fish, and G. bergii appears to have limited natural resistance to common aquarium pathogens. Strict quarantine and pathogen-free husbandry are essential. The species' care rating is appropriately described as specialist-only, and private aquarists are strongly discouraged from seeking specimens.

Conservation

Gymnocharacinus bergii is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List (criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv)), with the assessment published in November 2019. The listing reflects the species' global range of a single endorheic stream system covering well under 6 mi², continuing decline in extent of occurrence and habitat quality, and the absence of any other known population.

The principal threats documented in the scientific literature are invasive salmonids — rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) introduced in 1941 and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) — which prey directly on G. bergii, along with the invasive Uruguay tetra (Cheirodon interruptus). The thermal barrier that concentrates G. bergii in the warm headwaters has historically limited salmonid penetration, but warming trends and seasonal variation are allowing rainbow trout to infiltrate progressively farther into those warmer reaches. Additional pressures include livestock trampling of stream banks and water extraction, pollution, and illegal collection. In April 2018, an epidemic of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (white spot disease) — the first recorded outbreak of this pathogen in this species, apparently introduced with Cheirodon interruptus — killed an estimated 82% of the entire global population. The population was already small; this single event represented a catastrophic reduction from which recovery will be slow at best. The provincial nature reserve and Natural Monument designation provide legal protection on paper, but enforcement and active management of invasive species remain inadequate. The species' fate hinges on control of invasive fishes and the maintenance of the thermal headwater habitat that is its only refuge on Earth.
