Taxonomy & naming
Hasemania nana was first described by the Danish zoologist Christian Frederik Lütken in 1875, from material collected in what is now Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The species is placed in the genus Hasemania, a small characid genus named in recognition of the American naturalist John D. Haseman, who collected extensively in South America in the early twentieth century. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Hasemania nana (Lütken, 1875) as the valid name, with the parenthetical authority reflecting that the species was originally described in a different genus.
Hasemania nana is noteworthy among tetras for its complete absence of an adipose fin — the small, rayless fin between the dorsal and caudal fins that is present in most other characids. This character has been used in arguments about the genus's placement within Characidae, and more recent molecular work has contributed to debates about the family-level classification of the broader group; FishBase notes a reclassification to Acestrorhamphidae for some close relatives, though the species is treated here under Characidae per the working classification of the site.
Morphology
Hasemania nana is a small, slender-bodied tetra reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL) in adults, making it one of the smaller members of a diverse group. The body is laterally compressed and streamlined, typical of active open-water schoolers in the Characidae.
The most distinctive feature is the bright white or silver tips on the caudal, dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins — a clean metallic flash that is equally striking in males and females. Body coloration differs markedly between the sexes: mature males develop a warm copper to amber or orange-brown background tone, particularly intense in dominant and conditioned individuals, while females are plainer and more silvery-white overall, with less colour saturation. The lateral line is complete, and the eye is proportionately large. The absence of an adipose fin sets Hasemania nana apart from the majority of tetras that share its habitat.
Habitat
Hasemania nana is endemic to the São Francisco River basin in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Within that basin it is most commonly found in smaller tributaries and creeks away from the main river channels, inhabiting both white-water and black-water environments depending on locality. These are typically shallow, well-vegetated watercourses with moderate to gentle flow, soft substrates, and overhanging riparian vegetation that provides shading and leaf litter.
Water chemistry across the species' range spans a moderate range: FishBase and Seriously Fish both report a pH of 6.0–8.0 and temperatures of 72–82 °F (72–82 °F), with hardness from soft to moderately hard (dH 5–20°H). These conditions reflect the varied nature of the São Francisco tributaries, which include both clear and tea-coloured streams depending on catchment geology and vegetation cover.
Feeding
Hasemania nana is an opportunistic omnivore. In the wild it feeds on small invertebrates, zooplankton, insect larvae, and organic detritus in the water column and at the surface, supplemented by algae and fine plant matter.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and readily accepts good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods. A varied diet that includes frozen or live foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp, and similar small items — brings males into the best copper coloration and keeps the school in condition for breeding. Small meals offered several times daily suit the fish's metabolic pace better than a single large portion.
Mating
Like the great majority of small tetras, Hasemania nana is an egg-scattering species with no parental care. Males compete for access to females and display their copper coloration most intensely when rivals are present, making a group setting with multiple males the best way to observe the species at its most vivid.
Spawning can be triggered by conditioning the adults on a rich, varied diet and providing fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops as egg receptacles. Males court receptive females with rapid, close-quarters displays, driving alongside them before the pair releases eggs and milt in a brief, simultaneous burst among the vegetation. A group spawn with several males and females is natural and effective, though pairs can also be separated for controlled breeding.
Breeding
Hasemania nana is straightforward to breed in captivity and has been tank-produced for the hobby for many years. The adults scatter small, semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops. Because adults readily consume both eggs and fry, the spawning medium — or the adults themselves — should be removed promptly after spawning is complete.
At temperatures in the upper part of the recommended range, eggs hatch within approximately 24–36 hours. The fry are free-swimming roughly 3–4 days after hatching, at which point they require very small first foods: infusoria, commercial liquid fry food, or rotifers, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered dry food as they grow. A 23.5 in or larger tank, clean water, and gentle filtration that does not suck in fry are the practical requirements for a successful spawn.
In the aquarium
Hasemania nana is widely kept as a community fish and is considered one of the easier small tetras for beginners and intermediate hobbyists alike. It is peaceful toward other species of similar size, active throughout the day, and most attractive when kept in groups of at least five to six individuals — schooling behaviour reduces stress and brings out the best fin-tip displays and male coloration.
A minimum tank length of 23.5 in gives the school adequate room to school and display. Water parameters are flexible within the range of 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–8.0, which suits many community setups that also house corydoras, rasboras, and other small tetras. Good filtration and regular water changes keep the species healthy; it is not especially sensitive to nitrates but benefits from stable, clean water. The white fin tips show best under moderate to bright lighting against a dark substrate or background. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized — the species can be nipped by larger, more boisterous fish, and its own fin-nipping tendency is low but not absent in crowded or understocked conditions.
Conservation
Hasemania nana is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, based on an assessment carried out in November 2018. The species has a relatively restricted natural range within the São Francisco basin of Minas Gerais, Brazil, but within that range it is considered common enough that no immediate population-level threats have been identified at the time of the assessment.
The São Francisco basin as a whole faces pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, water extraction, and dam construction, and the long-term outlook for many of its endemic species depends on watershed management decisions made at a regional and national level. The aquarium trade draws on a mixture of wild-collected and tank-bred stock; the availability of readily breeding captive populations reduces pressure on wild fish for the ornamental market. Hobbyists are encouraged to source tank-bred specimens where available.
