A diminutive and seldom-seen African tetra, Hemigrammopetersius pulcher is known from a single river system in southern Cameroon — the Dja (Ja) River, a tributary of the middle Congo basin. Reaching barely 1.5 in in total length, it carries a coppery sheen that earns its sole hobbyist name and has been catalogued under several generic homes since Boulenger described it in 1909. Genuinely rare in the aquarium trade, it remains Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, an assessment reflecting how little field data exists on its populations rather than any certainty about its status.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammopetersius pulcher was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1909, with a type locality given as the 'Ja River (Congo System) at Bitye' in what is now southern Cameroon. The Ja River is today more commonly transliterated as the Dja River. Boulenger's original placement has been revised several times over the intervening century: the species passed through the genera Petersius, Alestopetersius, and Phenacogrammus before being settled in Hemigrammopetersius. The Congo Museum (CLOFFA) records the senior synonyms as Petersius pulcher, Alestopetersius (Phenacogrammus) major pulcher, and Phenacogrammus (Phenacogrammus) major pulcher; the parenthetical authority in the current binomial reflects the species having been moved out of its original genus.

The taxonomic framework for the genus Hemigrammopetersius and its relatives within the family Alestidae was substantially worked out by Poll (1967) and further refined by Paugy (1990), whose treatments are the primary morphological references for this species. Alestidae — the African tetras — is a family of characiforms distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, loosely analogous in ecology and body form to the South American tetras (Characidae) that share the order Characiformes.

Morphology

Hemigrammopetersius pulcher is a small, slender alestid reaching approximately 1.5 in in total length, with CLOFFA noting a maximum of 2.5 in TL. The body form is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, elongate-fusiform, with a moderately deep body and the small mouth and single dorsal fin characteristic of alestid tetras. An adipose fin is present, as in all characiforms.

The common name 'Copper Tetra' suggests a coppery or brassy metallic sheen on the body, which is the most distinctive feature reported for live specimens. Detailed meristic and osteological data are on record in the specialist ichthyological literature (Holly 1927; Poll 1967; Paugy 1990) but are not readily accessible in summary form; the species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, so photographs and first-hand descriptions of living coloration remain sparse in hobbyist literature.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Dja River in southern Cameroon, a major right-bank tributary of the Sangha and middle Congo River basin. The Dja drains one of the largest intact rainforest blocks in Central Africa — the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — so its catchment is characterized by dense equatorial rainforest, dark-water streams, and seasonal flood cycles typical of the Guinea-Congolian forest zone.

FishBase records the species as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish occurring within an approximate pH range of 6.8–7.2 and water temperatures of 72–77 °F. These figures suggest a soft to neutral blackwater or clearwater forest-stream environment, consistent with the wider Congo basin lowland forest biome. No detailed microhabitat studies on this species were located in the available sources.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding studies on Hemigrammopetersius pulcher are documented in the available literature. As a member of Alestidae — a family of mostly insectivorous to omnivorous characiforms — it can be inferred to take small invertebrates, zooplankton, and aquatic insect larvae in the wild, consistent with the ecology of small-bodied open-water alestids in Central African rivers.

In the rare instances where the species has been kept in captivity, aquarists have reported acceptance of standard small-particle prepared foods alongside live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and Daphnia, in line with general alestid husbandry. Given the scarcity of wild-caught data, any feeding account for captive specimens should be taken as provisional.

Mating

No direct observations of mating behaviour in Hemigrammopetersius pulcher have been published in the accessible literature. Alestidae as a family are characterised by egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care, a reproductive mode shared across the order Characiformes and well documented in related African tetras.

Male alestids typically display to females with lateral flaring and colour intensification. Based on the family-level pattern, courtship in H. pulcher is expected to involve brief chasing and lateral display prior to spawning among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in open water over the substrate, with eggs distributed across the habitat rather than deposited in a prepared nest.

Breeding

Breeding records for Hemigrammopetersius pulcher in captivity are essentially absent from the published and hobbyist literature, reflecting how infrequently the species is encountered in the trade. By analogy with other small alestids, spawning is expected to follow the typical characiform pattern: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants, hatching within 24–72 hours at tropical temperatures, with adults showing no parental care and readily consuming their own eggs if not separated.

Any breeder working with this species would be operating in largely undocumented territory. General African tetra protocols — a separate, well-planted or mop-equipped breeding tank, conditioning of both sexes on live foods, a slight temperature rise to trigger spawning, and prompt removal of adults — represent the best available starting point. Successful captive breeding, if achieved, would constitute a genuine contribution to the husbandry record for the species.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammopetersius pulcher is genuinely rare in the aquarium hobby. Forum discussions confirm it is occasionally imported but is far from a fixture in the trade; most aquarists who have encountered it sourced it opportunistically from specialist importers rather than finding it in general retail. Its small size (around 1.5 in) makes it compatible with a wide range of peaceful community species, and its Congo basin origins suggest it would be best kept in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at 72–77 °F, heavily planted with subdued lighting.

Little practical husbandry information is documented. Extrapolating from related alestids of similar size, a group of at least six to eight individuals would allow natural schooling behaviour, and the tank should offer open midwater swimming space alongside plant cover. A varied diet of small frozen and live foods alongside quality micro-pellets or crushed flake is appropriate. The species' rarity means any captive experience — positive or otherwise — is worth sharing with the specialist community.

Conservation

Hemigrammopetersius pulcher is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 16 February 2009. A Data Deficient listing does not indicate that the species is not at risk; it means that insufficient information was available at the time of assessment to determine its conservation status. Given the species' apparently narrow endemic range — confined to the Dja River system in Cameroon — any significant degradation of that catchment could have outsized consequences for its populations.

The Dja River catchment is partially protected by the Dja Faunal Reserve, which affords some habitat security, but forest loss and subsistence pressure continue at the margins of the reserve. No targeted surveys for H. pulcher appear to have been published, and a reassessment with population data would be needed to determine whether Threatened or Near Threatened categories are more appropriate. The absence of data should not be read as an absence of concern.
