Taxonomy & naming
Heterocheirodon yatai was originally described as Odontostilbe yatai by Casciotta, Miquelarena & Protogino in 1992, from type material collected in the Uruguay River basin of Entre Ríos Province, Argentina. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer's) records Heterocheirodon as a genus established by Malabarba in 1998, with H. yatai as the type species by original designation — a monotypic genus from the outset. Because the species was originally placed in a different genus, the authority appears in parentheses: (Casciotta, Miquelarena & Protogino, 1992).
In 1999, Malabarba & Bertaco published a full redescription of the genus and species in the Comunicações do Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia da PUCRS, Série Zoologia (vol. 12: 83–109), consolidating its placement in the tribe Cheirodontini of the subfamily Cheirodontinae within Characidae. The cheirodontines are small, often schooling characids widespread in South American river systems; Heterocheirodon is separated from its relatives primarily by jaw characters that give the genus its name.
