Taxonomy & naming
Hypobrycon leptorhynchus was described by da Silva and Malabarba in 1996. The genus Hypobrycon was erected to accommodate small characins of the subfamily Diapominae (Characidae) with a distinctive combination of a subterminal to inferior mouth, anteriorly directed dentary teeth, and a reduced lateral-line canal. The valid name as accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hypobrycon leptorhynchus da Silva & Malabarba, 1996.
The type locality is situated in the upper Río Uruguay drainage of the Misiones province of Argentina, although the taxon ranges across the upper Uruguay basin including portions of southern Brazil. FishBase assigns the species to Diapominae within Characidae. The genus name derives from the Greek hypo (under) and brykon (to bite), referencing the inferior mouth position; the epithet leptorhynchus combines the Greek leptos (slender, thin) with rhynchos (snout), denoting the elongate snout that is one of the species' diagnostic features.
Morphology
Hypobrycon leptorhynchus is a small, slender characin with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in (males and unsexed individuals; FishBase). The body is moderately compressed laterally and somewhat elongate for the genus. The most conspicuous feature is the narrow, projecting snout and the inferior mouth orientation, giving the fish a bottom-oriented profile. The dentary teeth are directed anteriorly — a configuration unusual among comparably sized characids and likely related to the species' benthic foraging habits.
The lateral-line canal is perforated in 35–38 scales along the flank. The dentary carries 7–9 teeth. Coloration in life is not described in detail in available sources; preserved specimens show a fairly plain silvery body typical of many small Diapominae. Habitat
The species is known from the upper Uruguay River basin, occupying small shallow streams with clear water, discernible current, and sandy-rocky substrates including riffles and small waterfalls. Recorded sites lie at altitudes between approximately 180 and 984 ft above sea level in the highland interior of Misiones, Argentina, and adjacent southern Brazil. Water temperature at these sites is around 77 °F.
This upland stream habitat — clear, fast, and well-oxygenated — contrasts with the slow, turbid lowland waters where many subtropical characids occur. The rocky-riffle zone suggests a fish adapted to holding position in current and foraging along the substrate, consistent with the ventral mouth and anteriorly directed teeth.
