Taxonomy & naming
Inpaichthys nambiquara was described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba and Vinicius Antunes Bertaco in a paper published in Copeia in 2007, volume 2007, issue 2, pages 350–354. The type locality is the rio Doze de Outubro, a tributary within the upper Rio Tapajós basin in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The species was established on the basis of a holotype and accompanying paratypes — ten specimens in total — which constitute essentially all known material of the taxon.
The genus Inpaichthys was originally erected for the widely kept royal tetra, I. kerri, and I. nambiquara was described as a second species of that genus, diagnosed from I. kerri principally by the absence of an adipose fin and by specific details of the black lateral band and the shape of the vertically elongate humeral spot. Both species share the distinctive ventral black band that runs from the humeral region to the caudal region, below the midlateral line — a configuration unusual in Characidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and van der Laan) treats Inpaichthys nambiquara (Bertaco & Malabarba, 2007) as the valid name; the parenthetical authority reflects the species' placement in a different genus from its original description context within Hasemania lineage revision.
The specific epithet nambiquara honours the Nambiquara, the indigenous people of the region encompassing the upper Rio Tapajós drainage in Mato Grosso — acknowledging both the cultural geography of the type locality and the fact that the fish occurs within the Nambiquara Indigenous Territory.
Morphology
Inpaichthys nambiquara is a very small, slender characid, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in in male or unsexed specimens. Like other members of the genus, its most immediately striking feature is the black pigment band running ventral to the midlateral line from the humeral region through to the caudal peduncle. A vertically elongate humeral spot — a discrete dark blotch behind the opercle — is also present and forms part of the diagnostic pattern.
Fin-ray counts recorded from the type series include 11 dorsal soft rays and 20–23 anal soft rays. Notably, and unlike the majority of characid tetras, Inpaichthys nambiquara lacks an adipose fin — this absence is one of the principal features distinguishing it within the genus and from many superficially similar small Characidae. The body form is benthopelagic in habit, consistent with a species that occupies shallow sandy stretches near the substrate and leaf litter. Specific data on coloration in life beyond the published black-band pattern, or on sexual dimorphism, are not available from the limited type material.
Habitat
The known range of Inpaichthys nambiquara is restricted to the rio Doze de Outubro and the surrounding upper Rio Tapajós drainage in Mato Grosso, Brazil — a drainage of the Amazon basin. The species is described as occurring along the margins of shallow, clear, semi-lentic river stretches: slow or still water near the banks, with a substrate of sand and leaf litter and moderate riparian vegetation overhead.
This habitat profile — clear, relatively still water over sandy bottoms with accumulated leaf material — is characteristic of many small Amazonian micro-tetras that exploit the low-energy marginal zones of smaller tributaries. The entire known occurrence falls within the Nambiquara Indigenous Territory, a legally recognised area that has historically provided a degree of de facto protection from large-scale habitat conversion. The combination of a restricted range and a small number of known specimens makes the species inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of its type-locality reach.
Feeding
No specific feeding data have been published for Inpaichthys nambiquara. Given its small body size, benthopelagic habit, and the shallow leaf-litter habitat it occupies, the species almost certainly feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrate fauna associated with sandy substrates and leaf-pack accumulations — as is typical of micro-tetras in similar Amazonian habitats.
In the aquarium, congener Inpaichthys kerri is readily maintained on a varied diet of small live and frozen foods (Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, micro-worms) alongside fine-ground dry foods. Should I. nambiquara ever become available to hobbyists, a similar feeding approach would be a reasonable starting point, though its diminutive size suggests a preference for the smallest offered prey items.
Mating
No reproductive or mating behavior data have been recorded for Inpaichthys nambiquara in the wild or in captivity. As a small characid, the species is expected to follow the broadly egg-scattering, open-spawning pattern typical of the family: males likely court females with displays that accentuate the bold lateral band coloration, with spawning occurring among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over sandy substrates.
The closely related I. kerri is a well-documented egg-scatterer; pairs release adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation with no subsequent parental investment. By analogy, I. nambiquara would be expected to behave similarly, though the very limited material base means this remains inference rather than observation.
Breeding
Inpaichthys nambiquara has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree, and breeding data from the wild are absent from the published record. In the family Characidae, small micro-tetras of this body size and habitat type are typically egg-scatterers depositing small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or surface debris, with no parental care and adults representing a potential threat to eggs and fry if not separated.
Should the species become available for captive study, a breeding approach modelled on I. kerri — a well-lit, fine-planted or mop-equipped breeding tank, slightly soft and acidic water reflecting the clear-water Tapajós system, and separation of adults post-spawning — would serve as a logical starting protocol. At 1 in maximum length, fry would be extremely small and would require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii.
In the aquarium
Inpaichthys nambiquara is not known to be in the hobby trade. The species is known from only ten type specimens, was described from a remote and protected reach of the upper Rio Tapajós, and has not been commercially collected or cultured. Any appearance in the aquarium trade would therefore be exceptional, and aquarists encountering a fish labelled as this species should treat the identification with caution and seek expert verification.
In terms of theoretical husbandry, the habitat profile — clear, slightly still water over sand and leaf litter, with moderate riparian shade — suggests soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions at tropical temperatures. The very small size (under 1 in) would require a correspondingly small but well-maintained aquarium and peaceful, comparably sized tankmates. Congener I. kerri provides the closest reference point for care; that species thrives in groups with plenty of cover, subdued lighting, and small live or frozen foods.
Conservation
Inpaichthys nambiquara is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. The LC listing was assigned despite the species being known from only ten specimens and a single locality — the río Doze de Outubro in the upper Rio Tapajós basin. The IUCN assessors identified no current significant threats, and the location within the Nambiquara Indigenous Territory was noted as providing a degree of habitat security.
Nevertheless, the data underpinning this assessment are extremely thin. A species known from a single collecting event at one site, with no subsequent survey confirmation, carries an inherent conservation fragility that a Least Concern listing can mask. Any future agricultural expansion, road construction, or hydrological modification in the upper Tapajós basin could affect the sole known population before it is even re-located. The assessment was conducted by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the Brazilian agency responsible for freshwater fish assessments in that country.
