Kolpotocheirodon theloura is a small, little-known characin from the Ucayali drainage of Peru, described in 2000 by Malabarba and Weitzman. The genus Kolpotocheirodon is monotypic or near-monotypic and sits within the hyperdiverse family Characidae. Like many newly described Amazonian small tetras, it remains virtually unknown in the aquarium trade and has received no formal conservation assessment from the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Kolpotocheirodon theloura was described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba and Stanley Howard Weitzman in 2000. The species is placed in the genus Kolpotocheirodon, which was erected in the same publication to accommodate it; the genus is monotypic or nearly so, representing a distinct lineage within the family Characidae as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

The specific epithet theloura derives from Greek roots (thele, nipple, and oura, tail), likely referring to a morphological feature of the caudal region noted in the original description. The authority is given without parentheses, as the species was described directly in Kolpotocheirodon. It belongs to a broad assemblage of small South American tetras whose interrelationships and subfamilial placement continue to be refined by molecular and morphological studies.

Morphology

Kolpotocheirodon theloura is a small characin reaching less than 2 in standard length. Like many characids from Amazonian tributaries, it is a slender, laterally compressed fish with the typical tetra bauplan: a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin, forked caudal fin, and the complete lateral line typical of the family.

Habitat

Small tetras in this system typically inhabit densely vegetated margins, flooded forest, and slow-moving or still side waters with organic substrate and leaf litter.
