Ladigesia roloffi is a miniature West African characin from the forested streams of Sierra Leone and neighbouring Guinea, seldom exceeding 1 in in length yet brilliantly coloured in life — the male's compact body lit by a vivid orange-red flush and a glinting lateral stripe. Described by Jacques Géry in 1968, it remains the sole species in its genus and has long been cherished by specialists who keep African characins, appreciated for the challenge it presents and the disproportionate colour it packs into so small a frame.

Taxonomy & naming

Ladigesia roloffi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1968, and it is the only member of its genus. The family Alestidae — the African characins — encompasses the small to large-bodied characins of sub-Saharan Africa and includes both the tiny West African dwarf tetras and the large Congo tigerfish (Hydrocynus). Ladigesia sits in the dwarf-tetra assemblage alongside genera such as Lepidarchus and Nannopetersius, all of which are diminutive forest-stream fishes from West and Central Africa.

The valid name is Ladigesia roloffi Géry, 1968, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The specific epithet roloffi is a patronym honouring Erhard Roloff, the German aquarist and explorer who collected widely in West Africa and contributed much material of small African fishes to science. Géry acknowledged Roloff's role in bringing this species to notice. No subspecies are recognised and no synonyms are in current use.

Morphology

Ladigesia roloffi is a very small, slightly compressed characin reaching roughly 1 in in total length, making it one of the smaller members of the Alestidae. The body is compact and somewhat rounded in outline, the dorsal profile gently arched and the ventral line nearly straight. The eye is proportionally large — a feature typical of forest-stream fishes where light levels at the substrate can be low.

The male's colouration is the species' most striking feature: the body is overlaid with an orange to orange-red suffusion across the flanks, and a vivid iridescent lateral stripe runs from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, shimmering gold-green under direct light. The fins are largely hyaline but the caudal and anal fin bases may pick up some of the orange body colour. Females are more subdued — the orange flush reduced or absent and the lateral stripe less intense — and develop a fuller, rounder belly when in breeding condition, the reliable guide to sex in this species. Like most tiny characins, colouration is most saturated in settled fish under good conditions and fades rapidly under stress.

Habitat

Ladigesia roloffi is endemic to the Upper Guinea forest zone of West Africa, with records from Sierra Leone and the adjacent parts of Guinea. It inhabits small forest streams and marginal pools within the Guinea Highlands and their foothills — shaded, slow to gently flowing waters where leaf litter accumulates on the substrate and overhanging vegetation cuts light levels. These habitats typically carry very soft, acidic, mineral-poor water, with low conductivity and pH values that may fall well below neutral.

Water temperatures in the species' range are moderated by forest shade and altitude, generally running cooler than open lowland rivers — roughly 72–79 °F — with little seasonal variation in the core forest zone. The combination of soft, acidic water, dense leaf litter, and low light is characteristic of the Upper Guinea endemics and explains why this species, like others from the region, has historically been considered a challenge for aquarists accustomed to harder, more alkaline tap water.

Feeding

In the wild, Ladigesia roloffi feeds on small invertebrates available in the forest-stream habitat: microcrustaceans, insect larvae, tiny worms, and similar items from the water column and leaf-litter layer. The species' small mouth and body size limit it to very fine prey, and it is a midwater to surface feeder rather than a bottom-sifter.

In the aquarium it accepts micro-pellets and small flake food but responds best to live and frozen small invertebrates: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and Cyclops are all taken readily and bring the best colour. The species feeds confidently once settled and should not be combined with larger, more aggressive feeders that will monopolise food before these diminutive fish can access it. Offering food in several small portions rather than a single large feed suits the species' natural grazing style.

Mating

Ladigesia roloffi is an egg-scattering open spawner typical of the small West African alestids. Males display to females with spread fins, orienting laterally to show off the orange body colouration and iridescent lateral stripe at full intensity. Spawning occurs in small groups or pairs, with eggs scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or over a soft substrate; there is no pair bond and no parental care of any kind.

In good conditions — soft, warm, acidic water and a diet of live or frozen small invertebrates — males display persistently, and ripe females may be distinguished by their noticeably fuller abdomen. Courtship is not vigorous by the standards of larger tetras, and the species is best bred as a group rather than isolated pairs, allowing natural mate selection and reducing the risk that one fish overstresses another.

Breeding

Breeding Ladigesia roloffi in the aquarium is achievable but requires attention to water chemistry and small-scale detail. A small, heavily planted breeding tank with very soft, slightly acidic water — pH 5.5–6.5, conductivity low, temperature around 75–79 °F — best replicates the forest-stream conditions in which this species reproduces. Fine-leaved plants such as java moss or equivalent synthetic spawning mops provide egg-deposition sites, though eggs are also scattered more randomly.

Eggs are small, adhesive, and sparse — this is not a mass-spawning species — and the adults must be removed promptly, as they will eat eggs and fry without hesitation. At warm temperatures eggs hatch within approximately 24–36 hours; the fry are tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food for the first days before they can take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is slow and mortality can be high if water quality lapses or food is insufficient, but well-managed fry develop their adult colouration within a few months.

In the aquarium

Ladigesia roloffi is a specialist's fish — widely admired among keepers of African characins but not a common beginner's species. Its small size, sensitivity to hard alkaline water, and preference for live or frozen foods make it best suited to a dedicated nano or species tank rather than a general community. A tank of 10–15 US gal with dense fine-leaved planting, a dark substrate, and dim or diffused lighting mirrors the forest-stream environment and brings out the best colouration.

Water chemistry is the central challenge: the species is poorly suited to hard tap water and performs best in very soft, slightly acidic conditions, ideally with a proportion of RO water used if the local supply is hard. Temperature should be maintained in the 72–79 °F range. Suitable tankmates, if any, should be similarly small, soft-water-tolerant, and non-aggressive; other Upper Guinea dwarf tetras or small West African killifish are natural companions. Kept in a well-matched environment with appropriate feeding, the species is long-lived for its size and remains one of the most rewarding miniature tetras in the African characin hobby.

Conservation

Ladigesia roloffi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE). This reflects the broader pattern of data deficiency for small-bodied West African forest-stream fishes rather than any evidence of stability: the species has a restricted range in the Upper Guinea forest zone, one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots on Earth. Deforestation, agricultural expansion, and diamond mining have caused severe degradation of forest-stream habitats in Sierra Leone and Guinea, and the species' dependence on intact shaded streams with soft, acidic water makes it inherently sensitive to catchment disturbance.

No targeted monitoring or conservation programme is known for this species. Aquarium breeding by specialist hobbyists represents the only organised ex-situ presence; the species is not commonly encountered in the trade, and wild-caught individuals are rarely available. Given the ongoing pressure on its forest-stream habitat, a precautionary approach — treating it as potentially vulnerable pending any formal assessment — is warranted.
