Landonia latidens is a small, obscure characid endemic to the Vinces River basin of coastal Ecuador, barely exceeding 1.5 in in standard length and known from only a narrow slice of lowland Pacific-slope drainage. Described by Eigenmann and Henn in 1914, it remains the sole species assigned to the genus Landonia and is assessed as Near Threatened by the IUCN, a status that reflects both the restricted extent of its range and the ongoing degradation of Ecuador's Pacific-slope freshwater habitats.

Taxonomy & naming

Landonia latidens was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Arthur Wister Henn in 1914 from material collected in Ecuador. The species is the only member of the genus Landonia, making it a monotypic genus within the family Characidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Landonia latidens Eigenmann & Henn, 1914.

The genus name Landonia has not been widely parsed in modern ichthyological literature, and the specific epithet latidens — from the Latin latus (broad) and dens (tooth) — refers to the broad or wide-set dentition that characterises the species. The Characidae is an enormous, diverse family spanning hundreds of genera across Central and South America; Landonia's precise phylogenetic placement within that family has received limited modern attention, a reflection of how incompletely the many small, range-restricted Ecuadorian characids have been studied.

Morphology

Landonia latidens is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.5 in. Like most small characids it is slender and laterally compressed, with the typical short head, moderate eye, and terminal mouth of a benthopelagic schooling fish. The broad dentition suggested by the specific epithet distinguishes it from superficially similar genera.

Detailed published morphometric data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and the colour pattern in life has not been described in widely available sources. Aquarists should not expect the vivid pigmentation of popular small tetras; most small, obscure South American characids are silvery or translucent with at most a dark lateral stripe or caudal spot.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the Vinces River basin in western Ecuador, a Pacific-slope drainage within the Guayas River system. It is recorded as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish in tropical lowland conditions. The Vinces basin lies in the coastal lowlands of Ecuador's Los Ríos Province, a region that has suffered extensive conversion of native riparian and floodplain habitat to agriculture, particularly banana and cacao cultivation, over the past several decades.

Water parameters specific to this drainage have not been published in detail in accessible sources. Pacific-slope drainages of western Ecuador are generally warm tropical lowland rivers, and the Vinces system is at low elevation. The restricted range — a single river basin in a heavily modified landscape — is the central ecological fact of the species' existence and underpins its Near Threatened conservation status.

Feeding

No specific feeding studies have been published for Landonia latidens. Given its small size, benthopelagic habit, and membership in the Characidae, the species likely subsists on small aquatic invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and organic detritus in the manner typical of small South American characids.

In the aquarium — should the species ever become available — it could be expected to accept fine-particle prepared foods, small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, cyclops, and micro-worms, consistent with care protocols for similarly sized, ecologically comparable small tetras.

Mating

No specific reproductive or courtship observations have been published for Landonia latidens. As a small characid it almost certainly follows the open, egg-scattering spawning strategy typical of the family: a non-pair-bonding approach in which sexually ripe fish scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged roots, after which the adults provide no parental care.

Courtship in small characids typically involves active pursuit by males, who follow females closely and may display subtle fin or flank colouration to signal reproductive readiness. Without published field or captive observations for this species, the finer details of courtship behaviour remain undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in captivity for Landonia latidens, and no wild nest or spawning observations appear in the accessible literature. By analogy with other small South American characids, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits small, slightly adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation, with no subsequent parental investment.

Incubation period, clutch size, and fry development data are not available. Any aquarist who obtains specimens and attempts captive breeding would be contributing genuinely novel observations to the sparse knowledge base for this species.

In the aquarium

Landonia latidens is not known to be available in the aquarium hobby and is not held in collections outside of scientific contexts, if at all. It has not been commercially exported from Ecuador, and no care accounts appear in hobby literature. The species should be regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than an aquarium subject.

Should specimens ever become available through legitimate channels, general care principles for small Ecuadorian lowland characids would apply: a warm tropical aquarium (roughly 75–82 °F), soft to moderately hard water, good filtration, subdued lighting to reduce stress, and a school of conspecifics. The small maximum size of around 1.5 in places it in the nano-to-small-tank category.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Landonia latidens as Near Threatened (NT) on 28 August 2020, under criterion B1ab(iii). The listing reflects the species' restricted area of occupancy within the Vinces River basin of Ecuador and evidence of continuing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat, primarily from agricultural conversion, deforestation, and water pollution across the Guayas catchment.

Ecuador's Pacific-slope drainages have undergone some of the most intensive land-use change of any freshwater system in western South America, and the Vinces basin sits within one of the most heavily farmed lowland regions of the country. A species with a small, naturally fragmented range and no known presence in protected areas is inherently exposed to local extirpation from these pressures. The Near Threatened status is a formal acknowledgement that the species does not comfortably meet criteria for a threatened category, but that its situation warrants monitoring and that further habitat loss could push it into a threatened listing.
