Lepidocharax burnsi is a small, little-known characid described from Brazil in 2011 by Ferreira, Menezes, and Quagio-Grassiotto. It represents a monotypic genus at the time of its description, distinguished by a suite of scale and skeletal characters that set it apart from other small Neotropical tetras. Taxonomy & naming

Lepidocharax burnsi was formally described in 2011 by Ferreira, Menezes, and Quagio-Grassiotto on the basis of specimens collected from a South American river system in Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Lepidocharax burnsi Ferreira, Menezes & Quagio-Grassiotto, 2011. The genus Lepidocharax is placed within the family Characidae, the enormously diverse assemblage of Neotropical and African characins that spans hundreds of genera and thousands of species.

The genus name Lepidocharax combines the Greek lepis (scale) with Charax, a well-known genus and root word within the Characidae, alluding to scalation features that distinguish the genus. The specific epithet burnsi is a patronym, honouring an individual named Burns; the original description provides the dedication. Because the genus was erected at the same time as the species, the two names are tied: Lepidocharax currently contains only this one species, making it a monotypic genus.

Morphology

Lepidocharax burnsi is a small characid; precise published size data are sparse in accessible literature, but the species is consistent with the small body plan typical of many miniaturised or near-miniaturised Neotropical tetras, likely reaching only a few centimetres in total length. The body plan is the laterally compressed, fusiform shape common to small characins, with the complement of fins — dorsal, adipose, anal, paired pectorals and pelvics, and forked caudal — typical of the family.

Habitat

Lepidocharax burnsi is a freshwater fish from Brazil, but detailed locality and habitat data are not widely reproduced in accessible English-language sources beyond the type description. Like many small characids from lowland and sub-montane river systems of South America, it is presumed to inhabit streams or minor river channels associated with the broader Neotropical freshwater ichthyofauna of its drainage basin.
