Taxonomy & naming
Myxiops pelecus was originally described as Astyanax pelecus by Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco and Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 2006, published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 4, issue 1). The species was subsequently reassigned to the genus Myxiops, and the authority is accordingly rendered in parentheses as (Bertaco & Lucena, 2006). The type locality is the upper Rio Pardo drainage near Cândido Sales in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
Myxiops belongs to the family Characidae in the broad sense — a large and taxonomically complex assemblage of Neotropical characiforms whose internal classification continues to be revised. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the nomenclatural authority for the valid name. The GBIF species record (ID 5204290) links the original description to the current combination. No common name has been established for this species in the aquarium hobby or in the primary literature.
Morphology
Myxiops pelecus is a small, fusiform, and laterally compressed characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The body plan is typical of the open-water, midlateral-striped Astyanax-allied group: a streamlined shape, moderate fin development, and a relatively uniform silver body rendered distinctive by a specific pigmentation pattern.
The defining characters, as described by Bertaco and Lucena, are a single humeral spot situated above the lateral line — rather than at or below it as in several allied species — and a conspicuous, continuous midlateral dark stripe extending from the opercle to the base of the caudal fin. The species has 35 vertebrae. The specific epithet pelecus, from the Greek pelekus (axe), was chosen by the authors in reference to this pigmentation pattern, though the precise allusion to an axe-like shape in the marking is not made explicit in the cache notes.
