Taxonomy & naming
Nematocharax venustus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman, Naércio A. Menezes, and Heraldo A. Britski in 1986, in a paper published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (volume 99, number 2, pages 335–346). The type locality is the Rio Jequitinhonha at Itaobim, in the municipality of Medina, Minas Gerais, Brazil (approximately 16°40′S, 41°23′W), and the holotype is deposited as MZUSP 5131 in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo.
The genus Nematocharax is monotypic — venustus is its only species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authoritative reference for valid names) places the species in the family Characidae; recent molecular work has variously assigned Nematocharax and related small tetras to the broadly circumscribed Characidae or to narrower groupings within it, but the genus placement and authority are stable. The specific epithet venustus is Latin for 'beautiful' or 'charming', a reference to the fish's attractive appearance. Because the species was described in Nematocharax, where it remains, the authority appears without parentheses.
Morphology
Nematocharax venustus is a slender, elongate characid. Males reach a standard length of approximately 2 in; females are noticeably smaller, reaching around 1.5 in SL. This marked sexual size dimorphism — males substantially larger than females — is an immediately useful field character and is relatively unusual among small Neotropical tetras.
The body form is typical of a small, active stream tetra: laterally compressed, with a pointed snout, a moderately forked caudal fin, and the characteristic adipose fin of the family. Detailed published meristics and coloration notes from the original description document the combination of features that diagnose the genus, including the arrangement of scales and fin rays that separate it from superficially similar Jequitinhonha characids. The species' specific epithet — 'beautiful' in Latin — suggests it was considered ornamentally distinctive at description, though it remains rare in the aquarium trade and photographic documentation in the hobby literature is sparse.
Habitat
Nematocharax venustus is endemic to the Rio Jequitinhonha basin in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Jequitinhonha is a river of the Northeastern Atlantic Forest, draining eastward to the Atlantic coast; the drainage sits within one of the most biogeographically distinct and threatened freshwater regions of South America, harboring high levels of fish endemism.
The species is classified as freshwater and benthopelagic by FishBase, suggesting it occupies middle and lower water column positions in its stream habitat. Water parameters from the basin are consistent with the clear, slightly acidic to neutral, soft waters typical of Atlantic Forest stream systems: FishBase records a temperature range of 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and hardness up to approximately 10–20 dH. Like most narrow endemics of Brazilian Atlantic Forest drainages, it is assumed to inhabit forested stream reaches where riparian cover, leaf litter, and clean, oxygenated water are available, though detailed microhabitat data for this species specifically are limited in the published record.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study specific to Nematocharax venustus has been located in the available literature. Based on body form, habitat, and the feeding ecology typical of similar small Neotropical characids from Atlantic Forest streams, it is presumed to be a micropredator or generalist omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — along with any fine organic material available in its stream environment.
In captivity, small tetras of this general type typically accept fine prepared foods such as micro-pellets and crushed flake, as well as frozen and live foods including Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and small chironomid larvae. Given the lack of specific records, keepers of this uncommon species should approach feeding empirically and observe the fish's behavior at the surface versus mid-water to determine preferred feeding zone.
Mating
No published spawning observations specific to Nematocharax venustus have been located. As a member of the Characidae, it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner in the manner typical of the family: males court females without elaborate nest-building, and eggs are released and fertilized in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, with no subsequent parental care from either sex.
The pronounced sexual size dimorphism — males significantly larger than females — is consistent with male–male competition or active mate choice in which larger body size confers a reproductive advantage, as documented in various other dimorphic small tetras. Hobbyists who have kept and potentially spawned this species remain a primary potential source of behavioral data; formal breeding accounts in the peer-reviewed literature are absent from available records.
Breeding
No captive breeding account for Nematocharax venustus has been located in the accessible literature or hobby press. By analogy with other small Atlantic Forest characids, breeding is assumed to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern of the family: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over a substrate, hatching within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with small fry requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
The species' rarity in the trade and the limited hobby literature mean that no specific recommendations for temperature, water chemistry, or fry-rearing protocols are available. Keepers interested in breeding this fish would be breaking new ground relative to what has been published, and sharing successful accounts with the community would add meaningfully to the very sparse body of husbandry knowledge for the species.
In the aquarium
Nematocharax venustus is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade. It is not commercially bred at scale and appears in specialist collections primarily when exported from the Jequitinhonha region. Given its natural habitat parameters — 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water — it would be maintained in conditions similar to those used for other small Atlantic Forest stream tetras: a well-filtered, moderately planted tank with subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and some current to reflect the clean stream habitats it occupies in the wild.
As a small species (males to about 2 in SL, females smaller) it is suited to a community of similarly sized, peaceful fishes. The pronounced size difference between sexes means identification of males and females is straightforward once the fish have grown. Any keeper fortunate enough to acquire this species would be advised to keep a small group and to document behavior and any spawning attempts, as the hobbyist literature on Nematocharax venustus is essentially blank.
Conservation
Nematocharax venustus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment reflecting the 2022 cycle. The LC designation indicates that, at the time of assessment, the species did not meet the thresholds for a threatened category, despite its restricted distribution within the Jequitinhonha basin of Minas Gerais.
The broader context warrants attention, however. The Rio Jequitinhonha drainage is part of the Northeastern Atlantic Forest, a region that has suffered severe deforestation — the Atlantic Forest as a whole has lost more than 85 percent of its original cover — and the freshwater fish fauna of these drainages faces ongoing pressure from habitat degradation, agricultural runoff, and water abstraction. Narrow endemic stream fishes are inherently vulnerable to localized disturbance even when not formally assessed as threatened, and any deterioration of the Jequitinhonha riparian corridor would affect this species directly. Periodic reassessment and monitoring of population status in its native basin are warranted.
