Odontostoechus lethostigmus was described by Gomes in 1947 as the type species — and only species — of the genus Odontostoechus. It has at times been treated as a synonym or junior combination within Bryconamericus, appearing in the literature as Bryconamericus lethostigmus, but the genus Odontostoechus is recognised by recent authorities and the name Odontostoechus lethostigmus Gomes, 1947 is the accepted valid combination. The family placement has varied with changes in higher-level characiform systematics.
