Taxonomy & naming
Oligobrycon microstomus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915. It is the sole member of the genus Oligobrycon, making it monotypic, and the genus itself is currently classified as incertae sedis within the family Characidae — its precise phylogenetic affinities within that large and structurally diverse family remain unresolved. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Oligobrycon microstomus Eigenmann, 1915, with no subsequent generic reassignment.
The holotype (FMNH 57913) and a paratype were collected from the Rio Parahyba at Jacarehy, which corresponds to the present-day municipality of Jacareí in the state of São Paulo, within the upper middle Paraíba do Sul River basin. No additional specimens have been attributed to this species in the intervening century, and the original type series constitutes the entire known material.
Morphology
Oligobrycon microstomus is a very small fish, with the FishBase-reported maximum total length of 1.5 in placing it among the smaller members of the family. As its specific epithet and genus name both emphasise, the mouth is notably minute relative to body size — a feature that would have been apparent enough to Eigenmann to anchor both names.
Beyond its small size and reduced mouth, detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species are extremely sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting the fact that the original type material has not been supplemented by fresh collections. Its benthopelagic habit is inferred from the FishBase habitat designation, consistent with a small characid occupying the lower water column or substrate interface in flowing water.
Habitat
The type locality is the Rio Parahyba (Paraíba do Sul) at Jacarehy, in what is now the state of São Paulo, Brazil. This places the species in the upper middle portion of the Paraíba do Sul River basin, a major Atlantic Forest drainage flowing generally northeast before entering the Atlantic Ocean near the border of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states.
The Paraíba do Sul basin has been heavily modified by agriculture, urbanisation, and water management since the early twentieth century, and the upper reaches around the type locality are among the more impacted sections. No water-chemistry or microhabitat data accompany the original description, and no subsequent field records have been published, so conditions preferred by this species in life remain unknown. The absence of any modern record from a relatively well-surveyed basin suggests either rarity, restricted microhabitat, or possible local extirpation.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of approximately 3.0 ± 0.4 for Oligobrycon microstomus, consistent with omnivory or low-level carnivory — a typical position for a small characid that likely takes small invertebrates, zooplankton, and organic detritus opportunistically.
No field gut-content studies or detailed dietary data have been published for this species. Given its minute mouth, prey items would be correspondingly small — meiofaunal invertebrates, microcrustaceans, or fine particulate matter are plausible dietary components for a benthopelagic fish of this size. These inferences rest on analogy with similarly sized and ecologically positioned characids rather than direct observation.
Mating
No reproductive or behavioural observations have been published for Oligobrycon microstomus. As a small characid, the species almost certainly follows the family's widespread pattern of open egg-scattering with no parental care, depositing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, as is typical for members of the broader characid assemblage.
This inference is based on the reproductive biology of ecologically comparable small characids in the Atlantic Forest fauna and should be treated as a working assumption rather than confirmed fact. The absence of live-collected material means that courtship behaviour, breeding seasonality, and any species-specific mating features remain entirely undocumented.
Breeding
No captive breeding records or in-situ reproductive data are available for Oligobrycon microstomus. The species has not, to current knowledge, been maintained in aquaria or subjected to any experimental breeding programme.
By extension from related small characids, a probable reproductive mode would involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or bottom substrate, with small adhesive eggs and no parental care — but these details are speculative. Any attempt to establish the species in captivity would first require its rediscovery in the wild, and the species' conservation status is flagged as Data Deficient precisely because its current distribution and abundance are unknown.
In the aquarium
Oligobrycon microstomus is not known in the aquarium hobby. No specimens have been collected since the type series in 1915, and the species is absent from the ornamental-fish trade. It is treated here as a species of scientific rather than practical hobbyist interest.

Urbanisation, agricultural runoff, reservoir construction, and inter-basin water transfers have substantially altered the hydrology and water quality of the upper Paraíba do Sul since the early twentieth century. A monospecific genus known only from two specimens collected over a hundred years ago, in a heavily modified watershed, represents a significant data gap in the conservation of Atlantic Forest ichthyofauna. Targeted survey effort in the Jacareí area and adjacent reaches of the upper Paraíba do Sul would be the necessary first step toward a substantive status assessment.
