Piabarchus torrenticola was described by Valentin Mahnert and Jacques Géry in 1988. Géry was among the most prolific describers of South American characids in the twentieth century, and many of the small rheophilic tetras he co-described remain obscure in the literature. The genus Piabarchus was erected to accommodate a cluster of small Brazilian characids with a distinctive body plan; it belongs within the family Characidae in the broad sense, though the internal classification of Characidae has been substantially revised in recent decades by molecular and morphological studies.
The valid name is maintained as Piabarchus torrenticola Mahnert & Géry, 1988 in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the primary authority for valid names. No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised. The genus Piabarchus is most closely associated with swift-water habitats in South America, and its members are infrequently covered in hobbyist literature relative to the hundreds of more commercially prominent characid genera.

As a small schooling characid it would do best in a group of at least six individuals in a dedicated stream biotope setup: smooth pebbles, clean sand, little or no organic detritus, and minimal plant cover beyond a few rheophilic species. Water should be clean, cool relative to many other tetras, and well-oxygenated. Tank size need not be large given the fish's presumed small adult size, but current must be maintained consistently. It is not a species for the general community tank stocked with slow-water fishes, and its rarity means that any keeping represents a conservation-relevant husbandry effort.
Conservation
Piabarchus torrenticola has not been assessed for the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE) as of 2026.
