Taxonomy & naming
Pseudocheirodon arnoldi was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1909 on the basis of a specimen sent to him from the aquarium of Johann Paul Arnold in Hamburg. The holotype is held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1909.10.5.1). Boulenger placed the fish in the genus Chirodon; subsequent revision moved it to Pseudocheirodon, and it is now recognised as one of two species in that genus within the subfamily Cheirodontinae.
The type locality carries a degree of uncertainty. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the original locality as "Not: Puerto Mexico [Coatzacoalcos], Veracruz State, Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico [probably Panama]," reflecting the fact that the material passed through the aquarium trade before formal collection data were established. The species is now understood to occur on both the Atlantic and Pacific versants of Panama. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Pseudocheirodon arnoldi (Boulenger, 1909); the parenthetical authority reflects the species' transfer from the original genus.
Morphology
Pseudocheirodon arnoldi is a slender, small-bodied characid reaching a maximum of 1.5 in standard length according to FishBase.
