Taxonomy & naming
Pseudocorynopoma stanleyi was formally described by Luiz R. Malabarba, José Chuctaya, Matheus Hirschmann, Clarice B. Oliveira, and Rafaela P. Thomaz in 2020, adding a new species to the small Neotropical genus Pseudocorynopoma. The genus belongs to the family Characidae and is placed in an assemblage of South American characids sometimes grouped around the tribe Stevardiini, whose members show remarkably complex reproductive accessory structures on males. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Pseudocorynopoma stanleyi Malabarba, Chuctaya, Hirschmann, Oliveira & Thomaz, 2020.
The specific epithet stanleyi is a patronym: it honours Stanley Howard Weitzman (1927–2017), the American ichthyologist at the Smithsonian Institution whose extensive work on Neotropical characids, including several contributions to the understanding of stevardiine systematics, shaped the field over decades. The genus name Pseudocorynopoma signals its relationship to, and distinction from, the earlier-described Corynopoma — pseudo- being Greek for 'false', and koryne + poma referring to a club-shaped opercular apparatus.
Morphology
Pseudocorynopoma stanleyi is a small, elongate characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2.5 in in males and 2.5 in in females — making the sexes very close in maximum size, an unusual feature noted in the original description. The body is slender and fusiform, typical of the genus, with a relatively large eye and a small, upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.
Meristic data from FishBase record 9 dorsal-fin soft rays, 32 to 37 anal-fin soft rays, and 37 to 39 vertebrae. As with other Pseudocorynopoma species, males bear an elongate, fleshy appendage on the operculum (gill cover) that in related species has been interpreted as a lure mimicking a small invertebrate, used to attract females during courtship. The coloration in life is not fully documented in publicly available sources for this species; the body is presumed to be largely silvery with the lateral iridescence typical of characids of this size and habitat.
Habitat
The species is distributed in the Patos-Merin Lagoon drainage of southernmost Brazil (state of Rio Grande do Sul) and adjacent Uruguay. This large coastal lagoon system is the dominant freshwater feature of the Southern Cone's eastern littoral and drains a lowland landscape of subtropical grasslands, wetlands, and gallery forest. The system includes multiple rivers and smaller lagoons in addition to the main Patos and Merín (Merin) lagoons themselves.
FishBase categorises P. stanleyi as a freshwater, benthopelagic species in tropical waters, though the Patos-Merin basin at this latitude experiences a distinct seasonal temperature cycle more characteristic of warm-temperate than strictly tropical conditions. Specific microhabitat details — substrate preferences, vegetation associations, and water-chemistry parameters — are not available in the current public record, reflecting the species' very recent formal description. The first confirmed records from Uruguay were reported by Serra et al. (2021), who documented specimens in Uruguayan collections held at the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural in Montevideo.
Feeding
No published dietary study specific to Pseudocorynopoma stanleyi is available. By inference from the genus and from FishBase's benthopelagic categorisation, the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and surface-fallen items, broadly similar to other characids of comparable size and body form in lowland South American drainages.
In an aquarium setting, related Pseudocorynopoma species are reported to accept prepared foods including flake and micro-pellets alongside live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet is presumed beneficial for conditioning adults for reproduction, as is typical of the stevardiine characids.
Mating
The genus Pseudocorynopoma is notable among characids for a highly unusual mating strategy documented in at least one congener, P. doriae: females store sperm received from males and can fertilise successive egg batches over an extended period without repeated contact with a male. This internal fertilisation and sperm storage, rare among characids, is linked to the elaborate opercular appendage of males, which appears to attract females by mimicking a small prey item.
Whether P. stanleyi shares this reproductive strategy has not been confirmed in the primary literature available to date, but the presence of opercular appendages on males — shared with other Pseudocorynopoma — is strongly suggestive. If the mechanism is conserved, females may produce fertile egg batches well after any single mating event, a behaviour with consequences for both field biology and aquarium breeding.
Breeding
Specific breeding observations for Pseudocorynopoma stanleyi in captivity have not been published in the sources available at time of writing. Based on the biology of the genus and the broader characid pattern, breeding is expected to involve egg-scattering among fine-leaved vegetation or in open water, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs and no parental care. Adults of related species will consume their own eggs, so removing eggs or transferring adults after spawning is standard practice.
If sperm storage is confirmed in this species (see Mating section), a female housed without a male may still produce fertile clutches, which is a practical consideration for aquarists who acquire a single individual or a female-only group. Fry are expected to be small at hatching and require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

Pseudocorynopoma stanleyi is a very recent description (2020) and is not yet widely available in the ornamental trade. Its presence in aquaria outside South America is likely to be limited for the near future, though related Pseudocorynopoma species have periodically appeared in hobbyist collections and have attracted interest due to the males' unusual opercular appendages and the sperm-storage biology of females.
Given its origin in a subtropical drainage with a pronounced seasonal climate, the species may tolerate a somewhat wider temperature range than obligate tropical fish, though specific data are lacking. General husbandry for the genus suggests a well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting, soft to moderately hard water, and peaceful tankmates of similar size. The species' small maximum size (around 2.5 in SL) and presumed peaceful disposition suggest compatibility with other small South American characids and similarly sized catfishes. Aquarists sourcing this species should seek captive-bred stock where available and document their observations, as little husbandry information currently exists in the public record.
Conservation
Pseudocorynopoma stanleyi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its 2020 description is recent enough that no formal conservation evaluation has been conducted. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of an assessment should not be read as an indication that the species is secure: the Patos-Merin Lagoon system faces ongoing pressures from agriculture, water extraction, and eutrophication across its extensive drainage, and the species' precise range within that system is not yet well documented.
The confirmation of the species in Uruguay by Serra et al. (2021), with specimens lodged at the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural in Montevideo, extends the known range and adds a voucher base for future population assessments. A formal IUCN evaluation would require range-mapping from field surveys and analysis of population trends — work that has not yet been completed for this newly described taxon.
