Scopaeocharax atopodus is a miniature characid from the Huallaga River basin of Peru, barely exceeding 1 in in standard length, and notable for the conspicuously enlarged pelvic fins that give both its genus and its species name their meaning. Originally placed in Tyttocharax at its description by James E. Böhlke in 1958, it was subsequently transferred to Scopaeocharax when that genus was established; the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern, reflecting a distribution tied to soft, warm Amazonian headwater streams in what is now one of the most species-rich drainages in the world.

Taxonomy & naming

Scopaeocharax atopodus was originally described by the American ichthyologist James E. Böhlke in 1958 in the journal Copeia (volume 1958, issue 4), as one of two new xenurobryconine characids from Peru — the other being Tyttocharax rhinodus. The original genus-level placement was Tyttocharax, a name used for a group of tiny, pelvic-fin-modified Amazonian characids. The species was subsequently reassigned to Scopaeocharax when that genus was erected to accommodate it; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) treats Scopaeocharax atopodus (Böhlke, 1958) as the valid combination, with the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was not originally described in Scopaeocharax.

Within Characidae the species belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae (broadly construed) and to the informal xenurobryconine assemblage — a group of Andean and sub-Andean miniature characids characterised by derived pelvic-fin anatomy in males, used in courtship and presumed insemination. Scopaeocharax is a small genus, and S. atopodus has attracted relatively little systematic attention compared with more commercially traded taxa; its relationships within the xenurobryconines remain subject to ongoing phylogenetic work on Andean charins.

Morphology

Scopaeocharax atopodus is a very small fish, with males recorded at roughly 0.5–1 in standard length — placing it firmly in the category of miniature characids. It shares the general Scopaeocharax body plan: a slender, laterally compressed body with typical characid fins (adipose fin present), large eyes relative to head size, and a small terminal mouth suited to fine particulate food.

The outstanding morphological feature, encoded in both the genus and species name, is the enlarged and modified pelvic fins of adult males. In xenurobryconines, the male pelvic fin has been substantially elaborated — extended rays, glandular tissue, or scale modifications — and functions in close-contact courtship behaviour. The condition in S. atopodus appears pronounced enough to have inspired the specific epithet (see etymology). Females are presumably less modified in the pelvics and likely smaller-bodied than the largest males. Colour in life is undescribed in detail in accessible sources; as with most Andean minicharacids it is probably translucent or lightly pigmented, with any iridescent or lateral stripe markings serving a social signalling role.

Habitat

The type locality of Scopaeocharax atopodus is the Huallaga River basin in Peru, a major tributary of the Marañón that descends from the eastern Andes through cloud-forest and then lowland tropical-forest zones before joining the main Amazon drainage. Sub-Andean drainages in this region are characterised by soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, with low to moderate dissolved mineral content reflecting volcanic and weathered granitic catchments.

Based on conditions reported for related genera in the same drainage system and on the general habitat preferences of xenurobryconine characids, S. atopodus likely inhabits slow to moderately flowing forest streams and their margins, among leaf litter, fine roots, and marginal vegetation — the microhabitat where miniature characids with modified pelvic fins are most consistently found. Water temperatures in the Huallaga basin at mid-elevations run warm, roughly 68–75 °F. The species has not been collected from the ornamental-fish trade in appreciable numbers, and detailed in situ habitat notes are sparse in the accessible literature.

Feeding

No specific dietary data for Scopaeocharax atopodus appear in the accessible literature. By analogy with other xenurobryconine and stevardiin minicharacids of similar size and body form, it is presumed to be a microphagous omnivore, feeding primarily on small invertebrates — zooplankton, tiny aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans — and possibly fine organic detritus and algal cells at the water surface and among submerged substrates.

The small mouth and delicate dentition typical of minicharacids limit the prey size that can be taken. In the aquarium, species of comparable form and size do best on fine-grained live and frozen foods (Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia, Cyclops) and quality micropellets or finely crushed flake; data sparse on wild stomach contents for this particular taxon.

Mating

As a xenurobryconine characid, Scopaeocharax atopodus is presumed to practice a form of internal fertilisation or at least internal gamete transfer facilitated by the elaborate male pelvic apparatus — a reproductive strategy documented across the xenurobryconine assemblage. Males use the modified pelvic fins in close-contact courtship behaviour with females, and sperm or spermatophores are likely deposited into or near the female's genital opening.

Details specific to S. atopodus are not documented in the accessible literature. Related taxa suggest that spawning involves the deposition of adhesive eggs, most likely among fine-leaved vegetation or leaf litter, following the internal-transfer courtship sequence. No territorial guarding of eggs by males has been reported for xenurobryconines; parental investment in this assemblage appears limited to the male's courtship apparatus and behaviour.

Breeding

Scopaeocharax atopodus has not been bred in captivity in any documented hobbyist account available in the accessible literature, and it is not a species regularly offered in the ornamental-fish trade. General xenurobryconine breeding biology — involving internally transferred sperm, adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or substrate, and no parental care after spawning — would be the baseline expectation.

For closely related genera kept in aquaria (for example, some Tyttocharax relatives and other small stevardiin characids), breeders typically use very soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and a diet of small live foods to condition adults. Eggs are likely adhesive and hatch in a matter of days at tropical temperatures; fry would be tiny and require infusoria-grade first foods. Data sparse — the species is primarily of scientific rather than hobbyist interest at this time.

In the aquarium

Scopaeocharax atopodus is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and is not available through the ornamental-fish trade. Any hobbyist obtaining specimens would be working with a fish that has no established husbandry literature. Extrapolation from related minicharacids suggests it would require a small, well-planted species tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5), warm temperatures around 72–79 °F, minimal water movement, and tankmates small enough not to intimidate or outcompete it.

As a fish reaching barely 1 in, it would need appropriately scaled feeding — Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and fine-grained foods — and a densely planted environment that mimics the leaf-litter margins of its native Andean streams. The species is interesting primarily for the derived xenurobryconine pelvic-fin morphology visible in males, which can be appreciated in a species tank with good optics. Its conservation status (Least Concern) suggests a stable wild population, but wild-caught import is unlikely; data sparse on captive requirements.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Scopaeocharax atopodus as Least Concern. The Huallaga River basin, while subject to ongoing land-use pressures — deforestation, agricultural runoff, and coca eradication activities historically affecting some headwater streams — is a large and hydrologically complex drainage supporting a high diversity of small-stream fishes, and S. atopodus is not believed to face range-wide threats sufficient to approach threatened thresholds.

The species is not a target of the ornamental-fish trade and therefore does not face collection pressure. The chief long-term risks to any small-stream specialist in the sub-Andes are habitat degradation and stream-level deforestation, which increase sedimentation and alter the hydraulic and thermal regime of the clear, soft headwaters where xenurobryconine minicharacids are most diverse. Monitoring of Peruvian Amazonian headwater biodiversity, rather than species-specific management, is the most relevant conservation context for S. atopodus.
