Trochilocharax ornatus is a diminutive South American characid reaching barely 0.5 in standard length, placing it among the smallest members of the family Characidae. Described by Axel Zarske in 2010 and known in the aquarium trade as the hummingbird tetra, it is valued by nano-aquarium enthusiasts for its delicate proportions and active, shimmering schooling behaviour. The species remains largely unstudied in the wild, and its conservation status has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Trochilocharax ornatus was described by Axel Zarske in 2010. The genus Trochilocharax is monotypic — ornatus is its only member — and sits within the large, heterogeneous family Characidae. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) as Trochilocharax ornatus Zarske, 2010, the authority remaining unparenthesised because the species was described within the genus as now recognised.

The genus name Trochilocharax draws on the Greek trochilos, a word applied to small, rapid birds — by tradition associated with hummingbirds — and charax, the Greek term for a pointed stake or fence post that ichthyologists adopted early to denominate small, sharp-toothed characins. The combination thus evokes a hummingbird-sized characin, a name that maps neatly onto the fish's tiny size and quick, darting movements in the water column. The specific epithet ornatus is Latin for adorned or decorated, referring to the fish's ornamental colour pattern.

Phylogenetically, Trochilocharax belongs to a broad assemblage of small characids from South America whose internal relationships remain actively debated. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Trochilocharax ornatus is an exceptionally small characid, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 0.5 in for male or unsexed specimens. At that size it ranks among the smallest Characidae, comparable to other nano tetra species of the continent's lowland drainages. The body follows the basic characid plan: laterally compressed, fusiform in outline, with a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin.

The colour pattern, suggested by the specific epithet ornatus, typically includes a reflective or iridescent lateral stripe and contrasting fin markings that can be conspicuous under aquarium lighting despite the fish's diminutive proportions. The eyes are proportionally large relative to head size — a common feature in small, open-water characins that rely on visual detection of food particles and predators. Sexual dimorphism is reported, with females tending to appear fuller-bodied when ripe with eggs.

Habitat

Detailed wild-habitat data for Trochilocharax ornatus is sparse in the available literature, a situation not unusual for recently described micro-characids. The species originates from South America, consistent with the natural range of the family Characidae, but precise locality information is not fully established in secondary sources.

Based on the ecology of comparable nano characids from the same region, T. ornatus is expected to inhabit slow-moving or still, shaded freshwater environments — forest streams, flooded margins, and blackwater pools — where fine-leaved aquatic plants and leaf litter provide shelter and feeding habitat. Water in such systems is typically soft, warm, and acidic to neutral, with low mineral content and tannin staining from decaying organic matter.

Feeding

Trochilocharax ornatus is a micro-predator and micropredator-omnivore consistent with the feeding guild occupied by other nano Characidae. In the wild, the diet likely centres on tiny invertebrates — copepods, cladocerans, insect larvae, and other zooplankton-scale prey — that are available in the vegetated, often organically rich habitats the species frequents.

In the aquarium it accepts suitably sized prepared foods including crushed micro-pellets and fine flake, but shows its best condition and colour on a varied diet that includes live or frozen micro-foods: baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro worms, Cyclops, and Daphnia. Given its minute size, food particle dimensions matter: standard-sized flake or pellets are too large and should be crushed to a powder or avoided in favour of purpose-made nano foods.

Mating

Like the great majority of small Characidae, Trochilocharax ornatus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males court females with displays that likely involve lateral presentations and fin-spread posturing, behaviours common across the family at this body size. Because the species is so small, courtship interactions can be difficult to observe without a dedicated breeding setup.

Spawning is believed to occur among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over soft substrate, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are deposited in small numbers. A fully ripe female is visibly more rounded in the abdomen than a male, which is the primary indicator that conditioning has been successful. Groups that include both sexes and are well fed with live micro-foods generally come into spawning condition without special intervention.

Breeding

Breeding Trochilocharax ornatus in captivity follows the pattern common to nano egg-scatterers. A conditioned pair or small group released into a well-planted breeding tank, or one furnished with fine-leaved moss or a spawning mop, will typically scatter small, adhesive eggs among the vegetation. Because adults eat their own eggs and fry, breeders either move the adults out after spawning or relocate the spawning medium to a separate rearing vessel.

Eggs hatch in several days at typical tropical temperatures. The free-swimming fry are extremely small and require the finest first foods available — paramecia, infusoria, or commercial liquid fry food — before they are large enough to accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Survival rates improve markedly with pristine water quality and minimal disturbance during the first weeks. As with other micro-tetras, patience is required: full adult colouration develops gradually over the first months of life.

In the aquarium

The hummingbird tetra is best suited to a dedicated nano aquarium or a carefully chosen community of similarly scaled micro-fishes. At a maximum of 0.5 in, it can be outcompeted for food and stressed by standard-sized tankmates, and is entirely unsuitable in a tank with fish large enough to view it as prey. A species-only nano setup of 5.5–10 US gal, or a micro-fish community featuring similar-sized rasboras, nano corydoras, and micro-loaches, provides appropriate conditions.

Water chemistry should reflect the soft, warm, slightly acidic to neutral conditions of its native South American habitat: temperatures in the 75–82 °F range, pH 6.0–7.5, and low to moderate hardness. A planted setup with gentle filtration, subdued lighting, and a dark substrate or leaf-litter background allows the fish to display naturally and reduces stress. Trochilocharax ornatus should be kept as a school of at least eight to ten individuals; smaller groups tend to be timid and remain hidden. Its appeal to experienced nano-aquarium keepers lies precisely in the challenge and reward of maintaining and breeding a fish at the very small end of the family's size range.

Conservation

Trochilocharax ornatus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). This is not unusual for a small, recently described Neotropical characid: the IUCN's freshwater fish assessment programme has not yet covered a large proportion of South America's micro-fish fauna, and many species described in the last two decades lack formal conservation status.

The absence of an assessment does not imply that the species is secure. Small, range-restricted characids are disproportionately vulnerable to habitat alteration — deforestation, siltation, and changes to river hydrology affect the slow-water, vegetated microhabitats they depend on. For aquarists, sourcing tank-bred specimens where available is advisable, both to reduce pressure on any wild population and because captive-bred fish adapt more readily to aquarium conditions. Should the species prove popular in the trade, documentation of its wild range and population status would be a valuable contribution to its conservation baseline.
