Taxonomy & naming
Varicharax nigrolineatus was described in 2020 by Vanegas-Ríos, Faustino-Fuster, Meza-Vargas, and Ortega as the sole member of the new genus Varicharax, placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae. The type locality is tributaries of the Río Corrientes, Amazonas basin, Peru. The original description recognised 18 autapomorphies — diagnostic features unique to the new taxon — that collectively justified the erection of a new genus rather than referral to any existing stevardiine genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name.
The genus name Varicharax has not been parsed in publicly available sources captured in the research record at the time of writing, but follows the Characidae tradition of Latinised or Hellenised compound genus names. The specific epithet nigrolineatus combines the Latin niger (black) with lineatus (lined or striped), a direct reference to the conspicuous dark mid-lateral stripe that runs the length of the fish. Because Varicharax is a new genus named in the original description, the authority is not placed in parentheses.
Morphology
Varicharax nigrolineatus is a small fish: males reach up to 1.5 in standard length and females up to 1 in SL, placing it among the smaller stevardiines. The body is slender and fusiform, with cycloid scales, a complete lateral line, and a forked caudal fin. The pelvic-fin origin lies anterior to the midpoint of the body — a positional character noted in the formal diagnosis.
The most immediately visible feature is a sharply defined dark stripe running from the head to the base of the caudal peduncle, the character encoded in the species name. Adult males possess bony hooks on the caudal-fin rays, as seen in other stevardiines, and — most unusually — a pouch-like structure on the lower lobe of the caudal fin formed by hypertrophied squamation (enlarged scales). This last feature was among the autapomorphies cited in the original description as supporting the new genus and has no exact parallel among described relatives.
Sexual dimorphism is present: males are larger-bodied and carry the fin hooks and specialised caudal squamation; females lack these secondary structures and are slightly smaller at maturity.
Habitat
The type locality of Varicharax nigrolineatus is tributaries of the Río Corrientes, a lowland Amazonian river system in the Loreto region of Peru. The Río Corrientes drains into the Río Tigre and ultimately the Marañón–Amazon system. The broader Amazon basin of Loreto is characterised by warm, often blackwater or whitewater tributaries flowing through lowland tropical rainforest, with soft, acidic to near-neutral water in the smaller streams.
FishBase records the species as a pelagic (open-water) freshwater fish in a tropical habitat, consistent with the mid-water or near-surface orientation common in small characids. Beyond these data points the microhabitat preferences of Varicharax nigrolineatus are not documented in the available literature, and the known range remains limited to the original collection sites. Whether the species occurs more broadly across Amazonian Peru is unknown.
Feeding
No specific dietary data have been published for Varicharax nigrolineatus. As a small stevardiine characid from Amazonian lowland streams, it most likely feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and surface-fallen prey — supplemented opportunistically by algae and organic detritus, as is typical for ecologically similar small characids in its range.
In captivity, small-bodied Amazonian characids of comparable size generally accept fine-grade flake, micro pellets, and small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and cyclops. Given the scarcity of published husbandry data, inferences about feeding behaviour in the aquarium remain tentative.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been formally described for Varicharax nigrolineatus in the literature available at the time of writing. The presence of bony caudal-fin hooks in adult males is a feature shared with many other stevardiines and is generally interpreted as a contact structure associated with spawning behaviour, likely facilitating physical contact between males and females during the spawning embrace.
By analogy with related stevardiines, spawning is expected to be an open, egg-scattering event among fine-leaved vegetation or submerged structure, with no parental care. Males with fully developed hooks and caudal-pouch structures are presumably sexually active, but the specific courtship and pairing behaviours of this species are not yet documented.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Varicharax nigrolineatus has not been documented in the published literature or hobbyist record as of the research conducted for this article. The species was described only in 2020 and remains effectively unknown in the ornamental trade.
For stevardiines generally, breeding typically involves egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs and no parental care. If and when this species enters cultivation, the established stevardiine approach — a conditioned pair or small group, dense fine-leaved plants or mops, soft to moderately soft acidic water at tropical temperatures, and removal of adults after spawning — would be a reasonable starting point. Specific clutch sizes and incubation periods are not on record.
In the aquarium
Varicharax nigrolineatus is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its small size — under 1.5 in SL — and striking lateral stripe would make it a candidate for a nano or species tank, and its stevardiine affinities suggest it would do well in soft, warm, well-oxygenated water with gentle flow, dense planting, and subdued lighting that mimics the shaded Amazonian tributaries it inhabits.
Given the absence of established husbandry data, keepers obtaining this species would be working from first principles, drawing on experience with comparable small Amazonian characids. Water conditions consistent with its lowland Peruvian origin — temperatures in the mid- to upper 20s Celsius, slightly acidic to neutral pH, low conductivity — are a reasonable baseline. As with any newly described species of limited range, sourcing wild-caught specimens responsibly and contributing observations to the published record would have genuine scientific value.
Conservation
Varicharax nigrolineatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species was described only in 2020, and recently named taxa with limited collection data typically await a future Red List assessment cycle before receiving an official status designation.
The species is currently known only from tributaries of the Río Corrientes in Loreto, Peru — a region that, while still largely forested, faces long-term pressure from oil extraction, deforestation, and associated water-quality degradation. A species with a restricted, documented range in a single Amazonian sub-basin is inherently vulnerable to localised habitat change. Until a formal IUCN assessment is conducted, the conservation status of Varicharax nigrolineatus remains uncertain, and additional survey work to characterise the full extent of its range would be valuable.
