The Grijalva is the Usumacinta's quieter sister — the second great river draining the Chiapas highlands of southern Mexico and far-western Guatemala to the Gulf, and one of the most biologically distinctive cichlid waters in Mesoamerica. It rises in the Sierra Madre, gathers in the limestone uplands around La Concordia, knifes through the Sumidero Canyon below Tuxtla Gutiérrez between walls that stand up to roughly 1,0 ft (3,300 ft) high, then falls across the Tabasco lowlands to merge with the Usumacinta near Villahermosa and empty into the Bay of Campeche. Together the two form the most voluminous river system in Mesoamerica. But the Grijalva carries a second, harder distinction: it is the most heavily dammed river in Mexico. Four large hydroelectric dams — La Angostura, Chicoasén, Malpaso and Peñitas — were stacked along its middle course between the 1960s and 1980s, converting a free-flowing montane river into a staircase of reservoirs. The fish that evolved in that river, including a small flock of cichlids found nowhere else on Earth, now live in a system rebuilt almost end to end by engineering.

Geography & hydrology

The Grijalva drains the highlands of Chiapas and a corner of northwestern Guatemala, flowing generally northwest and then north across roughly 373–398 mi (about 400 miles) from the Sierra Madre to the Gulf of Mexico (Britannica). Its headstreams — the largest of which is the Cuilco — rise in the Sierra Madre of Guatemala and the Sierra de Soconusco, and through Chiapas the river is known locally as the Río Grande de Chiapa, or simply the Río Chiapa. Hydrologists divide the system into three regions: the Upper Grijalva (Grijalva–La Concordia) in the highland headwaters, the Middle Grijalva (Grijalva–Tuxtla Gutiérrez) through the canyon country, and the Lower Grijalva (Grijalva–Villahermosa) across the Tabasco floodplain (Gómez-Martínez et al.; NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010). The Grijalva proper drains on the order of 56,0 mi²; combined with the Usumacinta, into which it merges before reaching the sea, the joint basin covers roughly 134,249 mi² (Grijalva–Usumacinta system).

The river's signature landform is the Sumidero Canyon (Cañón del Sumidero), a narrow limestone gorge cut over millions of years just downstream of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Its near-vertical walls reach up to about 1,0 ft (3,300 ft) over a length of roughly 8 mi (8 miles), with the river bending as sharply as 90 degrees between the cliffs (Sumidero Canyon National Park; CONANP). The canyon now holds the slackwater of the Chicoasén reservoir, which backs up some 16 mi (about 16 miles) through the gorge — so the most dramatic stretch of the natural river is today an arm of a hydroelectric lake.

The defining hydrological fact of the modern Grijalva is the dam cascade. Four major dams divide the middle river into four sub-basins, each anchored by its reservoir: Belisario Domínguez (La Angostura) in the upper basin, Chicoasén (Manuel Moreno Torres) in the canyon, Nezahualcóyotl (Malpaso) below it, and Ángel Albino Corzo (Peñitas) lowest in the chain (precipitation-climatology studies of the Grijalva sub-basins). Malpaso impounds the second-largest reservoir in Mexico, after La Angostura — both lie within this single Chiapas river. The result is a river whose flow, sediment load and seasonal pulse through its middle and lower reaches are now governed by dam operation rather than rainfall alone.

Water & habitat

The Grijalva is a warm tropical river built on limestone, and that geology sets its chemistry. Headwater and canyon reaches run clear and hard over rock and gravel, with the calcium-bicarbonate signature of karst country; the lowland reaches grow warmer, siltier and more sluggish as the river crosses the Tabasco plain. Across the basin the water is broadly neutral to alkaline and mineral-rich rather than soft and acidic — closer in character to the clear, hard streams a Central American cichlid keeper associates with the region than to an Amazon blackwater. Surface temperatures sit in the warm tropical band, generally around 75–86 °F (about 75–86 °F).

Four broad habitats structure cichlid life here. The upper river offers clear, flowing, rocky and gravel-bottomed reaches — the home of the basin's rheophilic (current-loving) specialists. The Sumidero Canyon is a deep, rock-walled gorge of its own, steep-sided and originally fast, now partly drowned by reservoir water. The Tabasco lowlands carry slow, turbid, vegetated channels, oxbows, floodplain lagoons and seasonal wetlands. And superimposed on all of it are the four great reservoirs — large, deep, still water bodies that did not exist a lifetime ago. Malpaso alone has an average depth near 118 ft and a maximum approaching 456 ft, with a thermally and chemically layered water column quite unlike any natural Grijalva habitat (Rivera-Velázquez et al., Malpaso Reservoir study). In studies of the reservoir fish community, dissolved oxygen and temperature emerge as the environmental variables that most strongly sort which species live where — the same physics that organizes a stratified lake now organizing a manufactured one.

The cichlid fauna

For a cichlid atlas, the Grijalva matters because of what is endemic to it. The basin holds around two dozen cichlid species — Cichlidae is the most diverse fish family here, with roughly 25 species, just ahead of the livebearers (Poeciliidae) — and a meaningful share of the whole fish fauna is found nowhere else: basin-wide inventories count on the order of fifteen endemic fish species (Gómez-González et al., Check List, 2015). Several of those endemics are cichlids, the small flock that gives the Grijalva its identity.

The standout is Chiapaheros grammodes, the Chiapa de Corzo cichlid, a heroine restricted to the upper Grijalva and the Sumidero Canyon — a genuinely canyon-and-headwater endemic, reaching about 8 in and found over rock, sand and silt. Alongside it are the basin's Vieja: Vieja hartwegi, the tailbar cichlid, a striking Grijalva endemic assessed as Endangered, and Vieja breidohri, the Angostura cichlid, named for the upper-river reservoir region. These three — Chiapaheros grammodes, Vieja hartwegi and Vieja breidohri — are the endemic cichlids most often studied together as the heart of the upper Grijalva flock (Paredes-Trujillo et al., 2020). The genus Paraneetroplus is part of the same Mesoamerican radiation; Paraneetroplus gibbiceps (the Teapa cichlid) and the white cichlid Maskaheros argenteus round out the larger-bodied Vieja-group fauna, while the river's Thorichthys — the yellow cichlid T. helleri, blackgullet T. pasionis and Chiapas cichlid T. socolofi — fill the small, sand-sifting, firemouth-like niche. Larger predators and generalists complete the picture: the elongate, protrusible-jawed bay snook Petenia splendida, Salvin's cichlid Trichromis salvini, the checkmark cichlid Chuco intermedium, the pantano cichlid Cincelichthys pearsei, and the freckled, current-loving Rheoheros lentiginosus. It is a compact but distinctive Central American assemblage — heroine cichlids, eartheater-style sand sifters and ambush predators — rather than a species flock on the scale of the African rifts, and its value lies precisely in its endemics packed into one heavily modified river.

Conservation

The Grijalva's central conservation story is the dam cascade. The construction of four large hydroelectric dams along the main channel in Chiapas has been identified, in the basin's own fish inventory, as one of the major threats to its ichthyofauna (Gómez-González et al., Check List, 2015). Dams convert flowing river into still reservoir, fragment populations above and below each wall, block movement, trap sediment, and alter the temperature and oxygen regimes that native fish evolved with. For endemics tied to clear, flowing, rocky upper-river habitat — Chiapaheros grammodes and the Grijalva Vieja among them — the replacement of running water with deep slackwater is a direct loss of the habitat they need. It is no accident that Vieja hartwegi is assessed as Endangered and Chiapaheros grammodes as Vulnerable; the most narrowly endemic cichlids sit in exactly the reaches most reworked by engineering.

Damming is compounded by the usual pressures. Non-native fish are now established across the system: the Malpaso reservoir community alone includes introduced Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), redbelly tilapia (Coptodon) and the predatory jaguar guapote (Parachromis managuensis), and an invasive Asian parasitic copepod (Neoergasilus japonicus) has been recorded on the endemic upper-Grijalva cichlids — a reminder that introductions bring their parasites with them (Paredes-Trujillo et al., 2020). Deforestation in the Chiapas highlands, agricultural runoff, and changing nutrient loads in the lower river add to the strain on a basin that, although it covers only a few percent of Mexico's land area, sits in one of the most biodiverse corners of the country. The honest assessment is that the Grijalva is a river of high, partly endemic value that has already been rebuilt by dams along most of its length — and that holding onto its endemic cichlids now depends on protecting the unimpounded headwater and tributary reaches they still occupy, and on keeping the next dam or the next introduced predator out of them.
