Arabibarbus grypus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Jakob Heckel in 1843, with the Euphrates River as its likely type locality. The original combination was Barbus grypus, and the species passed for over a century under the broad genus Barbus before being reassigned. The current valid name, Arabibarbus grypus (Heckel, 1843), is confirmed by the Catalogue of Life, with the parenthetical authority indicating that Heckel's original genus has been changed. The basionym Barbus grypus Heckel, 1843 is the name of record.
The genus Arabibarbus is a small, geographically cohesive group of large-bodied barbs restricted to the rivers of the Arabian Peninsula drainages and Mesopotamia. Within the family Cyprinidae it has been placed variously in the subfamily Torinae or Cyprininae, reflecting ongoing revision of higher-level relationships within the family. Morphology
Arabibarbus grypus is a very large, robust barb with a deep, somewhat laterally compressed body. FishBase gives a maximum recorded standard length of 59 in and a maximum weight of 30 kg, with anecdotal reports of individuals reaching 78.5 in and 100 kg — making it among the largest cyprinids of the Middle East. The lateral line carries 33 to 44 scales. The dorsal fin has 10 to 13 soft rays and the anal fin 7 to 10, proportions typical of large river cyprinids in the region.
The head is described as round and shorter and lower than that of its congeners — a feature noted in the species epithet, from the Greek grypus (hooked, or having a turned-up snout), though the specific reference is to the head shape rather than a strongly hooked jaw. Habitat
The Shabout is a fish of large to medium-sized subtropical lowland rivers with moderate to fast currents. It inhabits the main channels and deeper reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates and their major tributaries in Iraq and Syria, as well as the Karun and Karkheh drainages in southwestern Iran and Persian Gulf tributaries. It appears here for completeness as a member of the barb family with a significant ecological and cultural profile in its native range.
For those with a specialist interest in large-river Palearctic cyprinids, comparable large-bodied barbs from the Middle East and Central Asia are occasionally maintained in public aquaria and zoological collections, where their imposing scale and behaviour can be better appreciated. Any captive care would require enormous facilities with excellent filtration, strong water movement, and cool to subtropical temperatures broadly in the 59–77 °F range.
Conservation
Arabibarbus grypus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment made by Jörg Freyhof in 2018 (amended from a 2014 assessment). The primary threats are heavy overfishing — the Shabout is a major commercial target species throughout the Tigris-Euphrates basin and in Iranian drainages — combined with widespread habitat modification: large-scale dam construction, water abstraction for agriculture and urban use, and pollution have degraded and fragmented its river habitats across much of the range.
The species has been extirpated from the Qweiq drainage in Syria. Across Iraq and Iran, commercial catches have declined substantially, and the combination of direct exploitation pressure and ongoing habitat loss places the population on a sustained downward trajectory. The Tigris-Euphrates system faces some of the most severe freshwater stress of any major river basin in the world, driven by upstream water extraction in Turkey and domestic abstraction, meaning the Shabout's future is closely tied to the fate of the basin's hydrology and the effectiveness of fisheries regulation across several jurisdictions.
