Taxonomy & naming
Paracobitis malapterura was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1846, part of the great wave of Middle Eastern freshwater fish descriptions that came out of 19th-century European natural history expeditions. Like many nemacheilid loaches, it spent much of the 20th century filed under a broader, since-split genus — older literature and some FishBase mirrors still index it as Nemacheilus malapterurus — before revision moved it into Paracobitis, the crested-loach genus more narrowly defined for a group of Middle Eastern and Central Asian stone loaches.
