Taxonomy & naming
Desmopuntius pentazona was described by the Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1894 from material collected in the Baram River, Sarawak, on the northwestern coast of Borneo. The species passed through several generic placements before reaching its current name: it was long known in the literature and the trade as Systomus pentazona and subsequently as Puntius pentazona — the catch-all genus that absorbed enormous numbers of Asian barbs through much of the twentieth century.
The genus Desmopuntius was erected as part of the landmark 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage that dismantled the polyphyletic old Puntius and redistributed its constituent species among a series of more natural genera. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Desmopuntius pentazona (Boulenger, 1894), with the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer from Boulenger's original placement. The genus Desmopuntius unites the "hexazona" group of closely banded Sundaic barbs, of which D. pentazona is one of the best-known representatives.
Morphology
Desmopuntius pentazona is a small, laterally compressed barb reaching a maximum total length of approximately 3.5 in, though aquarium specimens more commonly mature at 2–2.5 in. The body is deep and short, with the high-backed silhouette characteristic of the genus. The ground colour is pale silver to warm bronze-gold, crossed by five complete dark vertical bars: one through the eye, one behind the operculum, one at the shoulder, one at mid-body, and one across the caudal peduncle. The fins are largely clear to lightly pigmented, and conditioning males develop a reddish flush to the unpaired fins.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate. Males are more slender and show brighter colouration in peak condition; females are deeper-bodied and noticeably rounder when carrying eggs. The five-bar pattern separates this species from the closely related Desmopuntius hexazona, which carries six bars, and from the mainland Puntigrus partipentazona, which has a similar but incomplete banding pattern in a different genus.
Habitat
Desmopuntius pentazona is endemic to Borneo, with the type locality in the Baram River drainage of Sarawak (East Malaysia). It is a specialist of peat-swamp forest streams and blackwater habitats — densely vegetated, slow-moving or still waters stained deep brown by humic acids leaching from waterlogged peat. These are among the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on earth: extremely soft, with conductivity near zero, and pH values that can drop as low as 3–4 in the most intact swamp systems, though the FishBase range of pH 5–6 and hardness 5–12 dH describes the broader ecological envelope the species occupies.
The water column is typically warm (tropical lowland, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius in most seasons), heavily tannin-stained, and low in dissolved minerals. Submerged roots, fallen leaves, and dense aquatic plants characterise the microhabitat. The fiveband barb is a benthopelagic schooling fish that forages through the water column and along the substrate in these conditions.
Feeding
Desmopuntius pentazona is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates including insects, worms, small crustaceans and zooplankton encountered in the water column and along the substrate. Its small, terminal mouth and active, exploratory behaviour suit a fish that picks continuously at fine prey rather than taking large items.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods without difficulty. Good-quality micro-pellets and fine flakes form an adequate staple, but the fish thrives and shows its best colour with regular offerings of live and frozen foods — daphnia, micro-worms, bloodworm and newly hatched brine shrimp are all taken eagerly. Feeding in a school brings out competitive feeding behaviour and keeps the fish active and visible throughout the day.
Mating
Like all barbs, Desmopuntius pentazona is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no nest and no lasting pair bond. When females are gravid and males are in peak condition — usually following a period of good feeding and slightly elevated temperature — a male will begin driving a female persistently through vegetation or over the substrate. The two press together briefly and release eggs and milt simultaneously before separating.
Courtship can be protracted, with a single male pursuing one female or several males competing for access. There is no territory and no defence of a spawning site; the act of spawning itself is the entirety of reproductive behaviour. Colour intensifies in males during this period.
Breeding
Desmopuntius pentazona is bred in the aquarium, though its requirement for soft, acidic water means conditioning must be taken seriously. A separate shallow breeding tank with very soft water (hardness below 5 dH), pH in the range of 5–6, a light layer of fine-leaved plants or spawning moss, and a coarse-mesh or marbled base to protect eggs from the adults gives the best results. The adults are introduced after a conditioning period on live foods and spawning typically occurs at dawn.
Eggs are adhesive and scattered among plants and substrate; adults eat them readily if not removed after spawning. Incubation is short at tropical temperatures — eggs hatch within one to two days — and the larvae become free-swimming a few days after that. First foods are infusoria and other fine live foods; newly hatched brine shrimp are accepted once the fry are large enough. Soft, acidic, well-oxygenated water throughout the rearing period is important for survival. There is no parental care at any stage.
In the aquarium
Desmopuntius pentazona is a rewarding aquarium fish for the keeper willing to meet its water-chemistry needs. It is a peaceful schooling species — a group of eight to ten or more is the appropriate minimum, as lone individuals or very small groups become secretive and stressed. In good numbers the fish school actively, display to one another, and show their full colouration. Tank companions should be similarly small, peaceful species that tolerate or prefer soft, acidic conditions: other Sundaic barbs, small rasboras, pencilfish, and the smaller loricariids or Otocinclus are all suitable.
The aquarium should reflect the peat-swamp environment: dim lighting filtered through floating plants, a dark substrate, dense planting with fine-leaved species, and the addition of dried leaf litter or peat extract to deepen the tannin staining and keep pH reliably below 7. Hard, alkaline tap water is not suitable without significant treatment. Temperature in the mid-twenties Celsius (75–79 °F) is appropriate; the species will tolerate brief dips toward 72 °F but cooler water for extended periods is not recommended. Well-filtered, stable water with good oxygenation and gentle flow completes the setup.
Conservation
Desmopuntius pentazona is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a range that, while restricted to Borneo, is sufficient to prevent qualifying it as threatened under current criteria. The species is established in the aquarium trade, and a proportion of fish available to hobbyists are captive-bred, which reduces direct collection pressure on wild stocks.
The more serious long-term threat is habitat loss. The peat-swamp forests of Borneo — Sarawak in particular — have undergone severe deforestation and drainage for oil-palm agriculture and timber extraction. Peat-swamp streams depend on the intact forest to maintain their characteristic hydrology, water chemistry, and thermal regime: cleared catchments deliver warmer, siltier, more mineral-rich water, conditions that are chemically incompatible with the fiveband barb's narrow tolerances. Ongoing drainage and conversion of remaining peat-swamp blocks in Sarawak represents the principal threat to this and many other endemic Sundaic freshwater species.
