Taxonomy & naming
Desmopuntius johorensis was described by Georg Duncker in 1904, originally placed in the large catch-all genus Puntius. It was also referred for a period to Systomus johorensis and appeared in older aquarium literature under the synonym Puntius eugrammus before Kottelat's 1992 revision clarified the taxonomy of the striped barbs and erected Desmopuntius for this lineage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Desmopuntius johorensis (Duncker, 1904), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Duncker's original genus.
The genus Desmopuntius was established to accommodate a cluster of Southeast Asian barbs characterised by their longitudinal striping rather than the vertical banding seen in genera such as Puntigrus. The name reflects the barred or "imprisoned" pattern: see Etymology below. Within the genus, D. johorensis is one of the larger striped species and has the widest natural range, spanning both the Malay Peninsula and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo.
Morphology
The striped barb is an elongate, moderately deep-bodied barb reaching up to 4.5 in in total length, making it one of the larger members of Desmopuntius. The ground colour is pale silver to light gold, overlaid with a series of distinct, roughly horizontal dark stripes running along the flanks from the head to the caudal peduncle. The fins are typically translucent to lightly pigmented.
Sexual dimorphism follows the typical barb pattern: females are noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder in the belly when gravid, while males are slimmer and may show more intense colouration during courtship. The combination of horizontal striping and moderate size sets it apart from the vertically banded barbs of the Puntigrus group and makes it recognisable in the trade, though it may be confused with other striped Desmopuntius species in mixed shipments.
Habitat
Desmopuntius johorensis is a lowland fish of the Sundaland bioregion, native to southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo. It frequents blackwater streams, peat swamps, forest drainage ditches and slow-moving river margins — habitats defined by abundant leaf litter, submerged roots and wood, and water heavily stained with humic and tannic acids from decomposing organic matter.
These environments are among the most chemically extreme in freshwater fish biogeography: water hardness approaches zero, pH can fall well below 5, and temperatures hover in the tropical lowland range. Seriously Fish records values of approximately 68 °F minimum, a pH as low as 4.0, and near-zero hardness for this species' core habitat. FishBase data, reflecting a broader sample across its range, gives a reference point of 73 °F and pH 6.25, but peat-swamp populations routinely occupy far softer and more acidic conditions than those figures suggest.
Feeding
In the wild, Desmopuntius johorensis feeds opportunistically across a wide range of food types. Seriously Fish notes that wild fish consume diatoms, algae, detritus, small insects and worms, as well as zooplankton; FishBase records zooplankton, insect larvae, plant material, worms and crustaceans. This broad omnivory reflects the food base typical of forest-stream barbs, where allochthonous material — falling insects, leaf debris and its associated microbiota — forms much of the available diet.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods readily and should also be offered vegetable matter. A mixed diet of bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and quality flake or small pellets sustains it well and helps maintain condition.
Mating
Like all barbs, Desmopuntius johorensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no parental bond forms beyond the spawning act itself. When ripe, a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously among fine-leaved plants, roots or over the bottom.
Colour and activity intensify during courtship, and competition between males can be vigorous in a group. Spawning is typically triggered by favourable water conditions — soft, warm, slightly acidic water mimicking the species' peat-swamp habitat — often combined with a generous pre-spawn feeding period. The adults form no pair bond and assume no parental role once the eggs are scattered.
Breeding
Desmopuntius johorensis has been bred in captivity, and the requirements follow the standard egg-scatterer approach used for soft-water Southeast Asian barbs. A separate, dimly lit breeding tank with very soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, near-zero hardness), fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh or fine-gravel bottom layer to catch eggs out of reach of the adults is the standard setup. Well-conditioned fish are introduced in the evening and will typically spawn the following morning.
The eggs are adhesive and small; the adults readily consume them and should be removed after spawning. Hatching occurs within a day or two at tropical temperatures, and larvae become free-swimming within a few days. First foods are infusoria and paramecium, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. Water quality must be kept pristine, as soft, tannin-stained blackwater is low in buffering capacity and sensitive to ammonia build-up.
In the aquarium
Desmopuntius johorensis is an active, shoaling species that does best in groups of six or more, where it forms a cohesive and lively midwater school. It is less commonly encountered in the trade than some of its smaller relatives but is available from specialist suppliers of Southeast Asian fish. Its relatively larger size — up to 4.5 in — means it requires a spacious tank and is better suited to a species-specific or biotope setup than a cramped community.
The ideal aquarium replicates its peat-swamp origin: very soft, slightly acidic water with a temperature in the low to mid twenties Celsius, subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and decoration of leaf litter, twisted roots and driftwood. Tankmates should be other Sundaland species tolerant of soft blackwater conditions. It is peaceful with fish of appropriate size, omnivorous and not a threat to plants. Robust filtration and good oxygenation are important, but strong current is not required; peat swamps are slow-water environments.
Conservation
Desmopuntius johorensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2025), reflecting a wide distribution across Sundaland and no evidence of a major range-wide decline. Its range spans southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo, and it tolerates a variety of lowland freshwater habitats.
The long-term conservation context is nonetheless concerning. Peat-swamp and blackwater forest-stream habitats across Sundaland are among the most threatened freshwater ecosystems on earth, subject to large-scale drainage and conversion for palm-oil agriculture, logging, and urban expansion. Singapore's forests — part of this species' historical range — are almost entirely gone. Deforestation and peat-swamp destruction alter the hydrology, pH and light regime of these streams profoundly, and the cumulative effect on blackwater specialists including D. johorensis will depend on how much lowland forest remains intact across the range. The LC assessment does not mean the species faces no pressure, only that those pressures have not yet produced population-level declines detectable at a global scale.
