Discherodontus parvus is a small cyprinid barb described by Rainboth in 1977 from Jinghong in Yunnan Province, China, where it inhabits the upper reaches of the Mekong River basin. Reaching about 2.5 in in standard length, it is one of only a handful of species in the genus Discherodontus — a small Southeast Asian group within Cyprinidae named for a distinctive dental feature. Almost nothing has been published on its biology or ecology beyond its original description and scattered occurrence records from the Mekong drainage, and the IUCN has assessed it as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known about its status in the wild.

Taxonomy & naming

Discherodontus parvus was described by Walter J. Rainboth in 1977, with the type locality recorded as Jinghong, Yunnan Province, China — a town on the upper Mekong River (known in China as the Lancang Jiang). The species epithet parvus is Latin for "small", alluding to the modest size of the fish relative to other members of the genus.

The genus Discherodontus is a small assemblage within the family Cyprinidae whose name derives from Greek roots meaning "two-toothed" or "divided teeth", in reference to the pharyngeal dentition that distinguishes the genus. The genus was placed historically within the old, broadly defined Puntius complex, though it is now treated as a distinct genus in current classifications. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name Discherodontus parvus Rainboth, 1977.

Congeners such as D. ashmeadi (Fowler, 1937) are known from the broader Mekong basin in Thailand and Laos and from the adjacent Maeklong drainage, offering some comparative ecological context. Discherodontus remains a poorly studied genus overall, and the taxonomy and limits of its species have received limited modern revision.

Morphology

Discherodontus parvus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. Beyond size, detailed morphological accounts in the accessible literature are sparse; the original description by Rainboth provides the authoritative character data.

Inferences from the congener D. ashmeadi — which reaches 5.5 in SL — suggest a broadly similar body plan: a moderately deep, laterally compressed cyprinid body with the characteristic pharyngeal tooth structure that defines the genus. Discherodontus species are benthopelagic fishes, tending to occupy the lower water column and areas near the substrate in flowing waters. Colouration and detailed fin counts for D. parvus specifically have not been widely reproduced in secondary literature.

Habitat

The type locality of Discherodontus parvus is Jinghong in Yunnan Province, situated along the upper Mekong (Lancang Jiang). The species is considered endemic to the upper Mekong basin in Yunnan, and it has been recorded in Mekong basin assessments covering the broader drainage (2007–2018).

Ecological inference from the congener D. ashmeadi points toward tropical streams and rivers with clear water and moderate to fast current, with gravel or stony bottoms — habitat typical of upland Mekong tributaries. Fish of this genus are found near the bottom, often in pools of small to medium-sized rivers and in association with decaying plant matter. The upper Mekong in Yunnan is characterised by fast-flowing, relatively cool montane to submontane rivers before the river descends into the lowlands of Southeast Asia. Specific water-chemistry data for the D. parvus habitat are not available in the published literature.

Feeding

No published feeding data specific to Discherodontus parvus are available. Ecological inference from the congener D. ashmeadi, which feeds on insects and other invertebrates, suggests a similar invertivorous diet centred on aquatic insects, small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates. D. ashmeadi is noted as nocturnal, which may also apply to D. parvus given its benthopelagic habits and affinity for bottom habitats.

As a small cyprinid of flowing waters with a benthopelagic lifestyle, D. parvus most likely forages near the substrate, picking invertebrates from gravel, rock surfaces and detritus. Without direct field or aquarium observations the feeding ecology of this species remains undocumented.

Mating

No courtship or mating observations have been published for Discherodontus parvus. Like all members of the family Cyprinidae, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the universal reproductive mode among cyprinid barbs. Males in condition likely pursue gravid females through vegetation or over gravel substrates, with eggs and milt released together in brief bursts of spawning activity.

There is no parental pair bond, no nest construction, and no territory held beyond the moment of spawning. Eggs are adhesive and fall to the substrate or catch among plant material, where they develop without any attention from either parent.

Breeding

No breeding accounts for Discherodontus parvus exist in the available literature, whether from field studies or aquarium observations. The species is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade. Based on the universal cyprinid pattern, it would be an egg-scatterer producing adhesive eggs over a gravel or plant substrate, with no parental care of any kind.

Upper Mekong populations in Yunnan likely spawn seasonally, with reproductive activity tied to the regional monsoon cycle that drives temperature and flow changes in the Lancang tributaries. Specific spawning timing, fecundity, and larval development remain undocumented.

In the aquarium

Discherodontus parvus is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown to aquarists. Its small size — under 3 in SL — would make it manageable in an aquarium context, but specimens have not appeared in the hobby literature and are not commercially available.

For any hobbyist who might encounter this species, care inferences from the genus and its habitat suggest clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current, neutral to slightly alkaline pH consistent with upland Mekong conditions, and a diet of small invertebrates and quality prepared foods. As a benthopelagic fish it would likely occupy the lower levels of an aquarium, and its reported nocturnal tendencies suggest activity after lights-out. Any aquarium observation of this species would constitute a genuine contribution to knowledge.

Conservation

Discherodontus parvus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, an assessment dating to 25 March 2011 and confirmed in subsequent Red List versions (2012.2, 2014.3). Data Deficient reflects not safety but an absence of information — insufficient data on distribution, abundance or biology to evaluate extinction risk.

The species is apparently restricted to the upper Mekong drainage in Yunnan Province, making it inherently vulnerable to pressures on that system. The Mekong and its tributaries face significant and growing threats: hydropower dams across the mainstem and major tributaries have altered hydrology, sediment transport and temperature regimes; agricultural expansion, deforestation and water extraction affect tributary habitats; and pollution from mines and settlements degrades water quality in upland Yunnan. A Mekong basin fish abundance assessment (2007–2018) confirmed D. parvus in the basin but documented ongoing decline in fish diversity and abundance across the lower and middle Mekong. Given its apparently narrow range and a habitat under sustained human pressure, a formal population survey would be needed to determine whether this small and obscure cyprinid remains secure.
