Discherodontus schroederi is a moderately sized cyprinid barb native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins of mainland Southeast Asia, described by Hugh M. Smith in 1945 under the name Acrossocheilus schroederi and later transferred to the genus Discherodontus. It inhabits clear, fast-flowing forest rivers and hill streams where well-oxygenated water rushes over boulders and gravel, and it belongs to a small genus of Asian barbs found across the Greater Mekong subregion. Though seldom encountered in the aquarium trade, it is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a range that spans two major river drainages of Thailand and Laos.

Taxonomy & naming

Discherodontus schroederi was originally described by Hugh M. Smith in 1945 under the genus Acrossocheilus, as Acrossocheilus schroederi. The species was subsequently transferred to Discherodontus, a genus of Southeast Asian barbs whose placement has been revised as the taxonomy of the old catch-all genus Puntius and its allies has been progressively clarified. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Discherodontus schroederi (Smith, 1945), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original description in a different genus. FishBase and its nomenclature records confirm this placement, listing Acrossocheilus schroederi Smith, 1945 as the basionym.

The genus Discherodontus belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is part of the broadly defined barb lineage distributed across Southeast Asia. As with many Asian barbs formerly lumped in Puntius or its close relatives, systematic revisions following Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) and subsequent work have clarified generic limits; Discherodontus is distinguished from Puntius sensu stricto and from related genera by a combination of meristic and morphological characters. The specific epithet schroederi honours an individual named Schroeder, following a common nineteenth- and twentieth-century practice of naming new species after collectors or patrons.

Morphology

Discherodontus schroederi reaches approximately 3.5–4 in in standard length, making it a moderately sized barb for its genus. The body form is typical of riverine barbs adapted to fast-flowing water: moderately deep, laterally compressed, and built for sustained swimming in current rather than the compact, highly arched profile of some of the smaller ornamental species in the family.

Detailed meristic and colouration data for this species are sparsely recorded in the available literature. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish, suggesting it occupies both mid-water and near-substrate zones of its river habitat. As with many Southeast Asian barbs, the fins are likely unspecialised, and sexual dimorphism — if present — is expected to follow the typical barb pattern of females being larger and rounder when gravid while males may show more intense colouration, though captive observations confirming this are lacking for this species.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins, placing it across parts of Thailand and Laos and potentially adjacent drainages. These are two of mainland Southeast Asia's great river systems: the Chao Phraya drains the central plains of Thailand, while the Mekong is among the most biodiverse freshwater systems on earth, running through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

SeriouslyFish notes that the species inhabits clear, fast-flowing rivers and forest streams beneath a dense rainforest canopy, with substrates of boulders, stones, sand, and gravel, often with accumulations of decomposing plant material. This is the classic hill-stream and montane-foothill habitat of the greater Indochinese cyprinid fauna. The water is soft to moderately soft and acidic, consistent with the forest-shaded upper catchments of Indochina's rivers; FishBase records a temperature range of 72–86 °F, a pH of 6–8, and a hardness of approximately 5 dH. The well-oxygenated character of fast-flowing rocky streams is an important environmental parameter for the species.

Feeding

Discherodontus schroederi is a carnivore of small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. SeriouslyFish records the diet as including aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, with bloodworm, Daphnia, and Artemia noted as suitable foods — items consistent with a benthopelagic fish that picks prey from the substrate and the water column in fast-flowing rocky streams.

In its natural habitat the species likely forages on insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates dislodged from boulders and gravel by the current, supplemented by terrestrial insects and other organic matter that falls into the stream from the forest canopy above. This opportunistic invertivore diet is broadly typical of the genus and of stream-dwelling Asian barbs generally. In the aquarium, standard live and frozen invertebrate foods are appropriate.

Mating

Like all barbs, Discherodontus schroederi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond held beyond the act of spawning, and no territorial defence of eggs or fry. Courtship follows the typical barb pattern in which a male in breeding condition drives a gravid female through the current and over the substrate, the two pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

In the wild, spawning likely coincides with seasonal cues — changes in water temperature, flow, or day length associated with the monsoon cycle — that trigger the reproductive condition of both sexes. The eggs are adhesive and fall among the stones and gravel of the streambed, where they receive no further attention from either parent.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Discherodontus schroederi has not been reported in the available literature; SeriouslyFish notes that spawning in aquaria is as yet unrecorded for the species. This is not unusual for less commonly kept Asian barbs, particularly those native to fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams, whose precise environmental requirements for triggering spawning are not yet well characterised.

By analogy with closely related stream-dwelling barbs, any captive breeding attempt would likely require soft, acidic, well-oxygenated water at moderate temperature, a current-generating filter, and a substrate of fine gravel or smooth pebbles over which eggs could be scattered. Adults should be separated from the eggs after spawning to prevent predation. Until captive breeding is reported and documented, the details of incubation period, fry size, and early-life diet remain unknown.

In the aquarium

Discherodontus schroederi is a peaceful, schooling species that is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade. SeriouslyFish describes it as socially active, and — like most barbs from fast-flowing streams — it requires well-oxygenated water with active filtration and some current to thrive. It is not suited to stagnant or poorly oxygenated conditions.

For a species of this type, a roomy aquarium with a robust external filter providing strong flow, a substrate of smooth stones or fine gravel, and open swimming space is appropriate. Soft, slightly acidic water in the lower part of the temperature range (around 73 °F) reflects the cool, shaded forest streams of the Mekong and Chao Phraya uplands. It should be kept in a group of at least six individuals to allow its schooling behaviour to express normally. The diet should include live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, and Artemia — as a staple. Given its rarity in the trade, captive specimens are likely wild-caught; acclimation should proceed slowly.

Conservation

Discherodontus schroederi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment carried out on 25 March 2011. The species' range across two major Southeast Asian river systems — the Mekong and the Chao Phraya — gives it a broad enough distribution that no range-wide decline has been documented at the time of assessment.

Nonetheless, the broader Mekong basin faces significant and growing pressure from hydropower dam construction, which has altered flow regimes and disrupted fish passage across the drainage over recent decades. Forest clearance and associated sedimentation in upper catchments degrade the clear, fast-flowing rocky stream habitat that species like D. schroederi depend on. The Chao Phraya basin is heavily modified in its lower reaches by agriculture and urbanisation, though the headwater tributaries where hill-stream barbs occur are somewhat less affected. Continued monitoring is warranted as dam development expands in the upper Mekong and its tributaries.
